NY: Pondering John Lennon's 63rd Birthday Today...

Today would have been John Lennon's 63rd birthday. But he was shot dead, in New York City, on August 12, 1980 -- by a guy who ignored the handgun ban as well as the ban on murder.

In the 23 years since Lennon was shot dead, thousands of people have been shot with illegal handguns in NYC, and many of them died.

It is time gun banners admit that the NYC handgun ban only empowers criminals. It is high time to let innocent, decent, law-abiding people defend themselves.

Gun Bans Don't Work

WASHINGTON TIMES -- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a study last week that states there is no evidence to prove gun-control laws are effective in preventing violence. No kidding. There always has been substance to the cliche that guns don't kill people, people do. Correlative to that rule is that the criminals who use guns to kill usually possess their weapons illegally. These serial lawbreakers are not deterred by statutes prohibiting or regulating gun ownership. They will continue to use guns to commit violent crimes even if the rest of the population of sitting ducks are disarmed.

In the exhaustive brief, the CDC analyzed scientific evidence regarding "bans on specified firearms and ammunition, restrictions on firearm acquisition [including waiting periods], firearm registration and licensing, concealed-carry laws, child-access-prevention laws, zero-tolerance laws for firearms in schools and combinations of firearms laws." The verdict? "The Task Force found insufficient evidence to determine the effectiveness of any of the firearms laws or combinations of laws reviewed on violent outcomes." The task force also concluded that "firearms-related injuries in the United States have declined since 1993" despite the fact that "approximately 4.5 million new firearms are sold each year." ...

Original Title: "Concerns Surround Concealed Weapon Law"
-------
"People who hold permits in 28 other states are now legally entitled to carry concealed weapons in Arizona under what's called concealed weapons reciprocity."

" 'Right now it's a bad law because not every state has high standards when it comes to testing,' says Sean Hammond, a member of Arizonans for Gun Safety."

"He says he's not against guns or concealed weapon permits. But he does say the new law is unfair, especially since states like Tennessee actually allowed a legally blind woman to carry a concealed weapon."

" 'If people in this society think a legally blind person should be able to carry a handgun, then I think we're a poorer society for it.' " ...
-------

Blind people shouldn't be allowed to defend themselves? How very typical of this particular gun ban organization: they pretend they hold some moral high ground when in fact they openly endorse policies that abuse and further limit handicapped people. Rather than be called "Arizonans for Gun Safety", they should be called "Arizonans Who Hate Blind Women".

KING SALMON, Alaska - "A man and a woman were fatally mauled in a bear attack in Katmai National Park and Preserve - the first known bear killings in the 4.7 million-acre park, National Park Service officials said Tuesday."

"The bodies were found near Kaflia Bay on Monday when a pilot with Andrew Airways arrived to pick them up and take them to Kodiak, Alaska State Troopers said. The park is on the Alaska Peninsula."

"The pilot saw a bear, possibly on top of a body, in the camp and contacted the Park Service in King Salmon and troopers in Kodiak."

"Park rangers encountered an aggressive bear when they arrived at the campsite and killed it." ...

[Killed it with a firearm -- like any sane person would do if it was trying to eat them.]

"A self-taught bear enthusiast who once called Alaska’s brown bears harmless was one of two people fatally mauled in a bear attack in the Katmai National Park and Preserve."

"THE BODIES OF Timothy Treadwell and Amie Huguenard both of Malibu, Calif., were found Monday at their campsite when a pilot arrived who was supposed to take them to Kodiak, state troopers said Tuesday." . . .

"Park rangers encountered a large, aggressive male brown bear within minutes of arriving. Ranger Joel Ellis said two officers stood by with shotguns as he fired 11 times with a semi-automatic handgun before the animal fell, 12 feet away."

Obviously they don't "need" a .50 cal handgun, right? Firearms may be banned in National Parks for "the little people," but not for special government employees.

"For a city that is always taking its own temperature, Saturday night was a veritable hot flash. Gus Van Sant's award-winning movie 'Elephant,' set and shot in Portland, had its U.S. premiere."

" 'Elephant' centers on 10 minutes in the life of the fictional Watt High School in Portland, when two boys bring in a bag full of guns and perpetrate a Columbine-like massacre."

" 'My dad bought me one (a gun) for my birthday,' Zack Wilson offered. 'I've got a MAC-10 and a.357 Magnum, but I haven't fired them yet,' he said amiably. His friends shrieked and were at pains to point out that he's a good guy, really.' " ...

"At a news conference earlier in the day, the director described 'Elephant' as a 'dramatic investigation' of the Columbine shootings, as opposed to a journalistic one. ... He said he fully expected it to cause controversy, though he wouldn't name any of the myriad groups who possibly could be offended." ...

"Guns are being brought out and readied for hunting season all over the northwest. As the number of guns in homes rises, so does the risk of accidental and intentional firearm-related injuries and deaths."

"If you have a gun in your home, whether it's a hunting rifle, a shotgun or a handgun, this is a good time to make sure that it is stored safely at all times. If children or teens live in or visit your home, safe gun storage becomes even more important."

PHELPS, N.Y. -- An 11-year-old boy fired a rifle several times to scare off two older boys who kept ringing the doorbell.

The boy went to the door and ordered the teens, ages 13 and 14, to go away, but they refused and then entered the home's adjoining garage in this rural western New York town, the sheriff's office said.

When the teens refused orders to leave, the boy went into the house, reappeared with a .22-caliber rifle and fired several shots outside the garage door, authorities said. The bullets passed within five feet of the teens, who were not hurt.

The boy, who was not identified, could be charged with reckless endangerment, the sheriff's office said in Tuesday's Daily Messenger of Canandaigua.

The 10 plaintiffs include three Democratic state senators who voted against the bill -- Sens. Joan Bray, Rita Days and Maida Coleman, all of St. Louis.

Opponents of Missouri's new concealed gun law plan to target it in court on claims that it violates various parts of the state constitution.

A lawsuit to be filed Wednesday, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press, seeks both an injunction blocking the law from taking effect Saturday and a permanent declaration striking it down.

The lawsuit claims a provision of the Missouri Constitution dating to 1875 prohibits the wearing of concealed firearms, and it alleges the new law unconstitutionally imposes a requirement on counties without providing funding to cover the increased costs.

Some people in our region take aim as another Heartland state prepares to become a conceal carry state. People in Missouri can register to carry concealed weapons starting October 11th. Kentuckians have had that right for quite a while.

The Bluegrass State passed its Conceal Carry law in 1996. State police say they haven't noticed an increase or a decrease in violent crime since then. But, many of the Kentucky gun owners who use it say it provides protection. In fact, many people in Kentucky describe their state's Conceal Carry law as right on target. "When a criminal doesn't know if his victim is armed or not, he is more hesitant to commit the crime," says Bob Ayers, a special agent in Paducah.

The state just passed a controversial law, adding Missouri to the majority of states across the nation allowing a person the right-to-carry a concealed weapon.

But, Webster County Sheriff Ron Worsham thinks that many people who are issued a certificate to carry still won't be packing a pistol.

"Most people will find it's a big hassle to carry a weapon ... due to the many places that'll still be unlawful to go with a weapon," said Worsham. He went on to say that a list of the many locations and facilities where it will still be off-limits to carry, will be presented to applicants during a required gun safety training class.

'Law is unfair to legal gun owners'

Legal gun owners, facing strict control regulations under the Firearms Control Act despite police statistics showing that they are not responsible for gun-related crimes, are likely to challenge the constitutionality of the new law.

Legal gun owners are increasingly saying that the statistics show they are law-abiding and yet the law targets them. This has led to threats of Constitutional Court action and massive noncompliance with the law when gun owners are required to reapply for licences and to surrender what the state considers to be surplus weapons. ...

A former Scott County chief deputy looked stone-faced at the 12 of us, sipping our morning beverages and sitting at four round tables in his small classroom.

"Death is forever," he said solemnly, pausing for emphasis.

The statement elicited a few knowing smiles from those of us shifting slightly in our seats. We were different people brought together for one purpose: to qualify to carry concealed guns.

But Tom Beardslee wasn't about to just take our $100 training fee and only tell us which end the bullets came out of. He intended to make sure that, by the end of our eight hours together on Sunday, we would understand just how much toting a hidden gun could change our lives and the lives of others.

In peaceful New Zealand? Where carrying a firearm for self-defense, legally, is very difficult to accomplish? There must be some mistake.

Anyone who ever wanted to try clay target shooting can get a taste of the real thing on Sunday, October 12. No licence is required. Guns, ammunition and instruction supplied at Glen Innes clay target club on Stonehenge recreation ground. 10am start.

The club has obtained permission to hold a coach and beginners' day to let boys and girls, young and old, find out if they would like the sport of clay target shooting before they go to the expense of purchasing a shotgun and the trouble of becoming licensed.

People who already have shotguns and/or shooters' licences for other purposes are of course also welcome to try the clay target sport.

See? Guns aren't banned in Australia! They still have "sporting" gun shoots.

A MAN held up two milk bars with a handgun before escaping on a bicycle in Victoria's north last night, police said.

The man first struck a milk bar in Wyndham Street in regional Shepparton and threatened staff with a handgun before escaping with cash about 7.15pm, police said.

He then held up a St Georges Road milkbar about 9pm, before staff saw him escape on a bicycle, police said.

No shots were fired and no one was injured in either incident, police said.

Police believe the same man robbed both stores.

"It would be fair to say we're investigating links between the two incidents," a police spokesman said.

But the gun bans were going to stop this type of thing...right?

Diamond merchants in Surat in Gujarat are feeling insecure after two of their colleagues were robbed of diamonds worth nearly Rs 50 lakh in broad daylight.

On Tuesday morning a diamond merchant and his colleague were on their way to the diamond trading market from a diamond cutting factory when they were stopped by three men armed with a country-made pistol.

The robbery has once again shaken the diamond traders' industry in Surat, still recovering from the kidnap and murder of a diamond broker in May.

To prevent further robberies, Surat's diamond association has asked the state government to demarcate a separate area for them that can be boarded up and guarded.

Right, look to the Government that disarmed you and left you defenseless against thugs. Makes so much sense.

ONTARIO -- With his pistol at the ready, the tumbleweed a rollin', and his cowboy hat set just so, the Rev. Damon Fire will fight for his honour this weekend in a barn shootout just east of Ottawa.

"There ain't room for both of us in this global village," says Marshal McLuhan, one of the nefarious characters who will take Fire on. Known out of the corral as Dave Bartlett, McLuhan is also the president of the Eastern Ontario Handgun Club, which is bringing together a dozen or so eastern Ontario gun enthusiasts for a Cowboy Action Shooting weekend starting Saturday.

More disarmed victims of victim disarmament.

Five armed gangsters hijacked passengers at Karunga bus stage on Monday night.

One of the passengers who had stashed his mobile phone in his private parts saved the day when he used it to alert police and the vehicle owner.

The driver was dropping a passenger at the stage when the gang emerged from a nearby bush and ordered him to the back seats at gun point.

The gang took control of the vehicle with 17 passengers on board and drove it towards Rongai as they robbed the travellers of their property.

Several passengers sustained serious head and arms injuries while others were admitted to hospital with internal fractures after a thorough beating by the gangsters.

Attorney General John Ashcroft is on tour trying to dredge up support for the Patriot Acts I & II which of course means more power for him and the other security hacks in Washington. I still don't think that the public understands that The Patriot Acts, in conjunction with the RICO Act and others, are the final mechanism for the suspension of the Constitution and the imposition of a military and police dictatorship in this country. The signs are widely available.

They say obstructing concealed carry reform to protect Governor Bob Taft is about Republican Party solidarity. It looks more like they're tying lines to a sinking ship.

According to the latest Ohio Poll, released Wednesday by the University of Cincinnati’s Institute for Policy Research, more Ohioans than ever say they are not happy with the job Taft is doing. According to the poll, the governor’s disapproval rating is at 46 percent.

KABA COMMENT:

Recall him like they did in California. Then the GOP can get behind another liberal RINO (Republican In Name Only) and abuse any real conservatives who stand up for what the GOP abandoned a long, long time ago: Principles.

"A few months ago, I wrote about the Free State Project -- a plan whereby thousands of libertarians and constitutional purists would move en masse to a single state in hopes of winning public office and dismantling cumbersome Big Gov't rule. Now, an update: The ballots are in, the votes have been counted, and New Hampshire's been chosen as the official destination of freedom-loving people all over the world."

"From where I stand, the Free State Project represents our best shot at a genuine American revolution. Not the violent kind, mind you, but the kind that grabs hard-working, clear-thinking people by the heart -- the kind that shakes, not stirs, them to their senses." ...

SARASOTA -- "City commissioners have voted 3-2 to consider a resolution that would make Sarasota the 180th community to express opposition to the federal counterterrorism law known as the USA Patriot Act."

"The commission will consider the resolution Oct. 20."

"Monday's vote to put the resolution on the agenda for the next meeting followed a rally by dozens of local activists critical of the act."

" 'Although passed nationally, it's the local people that are affected,' said Marie Millett, who attended the rally at Five Points Park, across from Selby Public Library."

"Millett, 77, followed the protesters to City Hall, where they packed the commission chambers to hear the commissioners take positions on their demand." ...

PRINCETON BOROUGH - "Following in the footsteps of at least 180 other municipalities around the country, the borough council last night passed a resolution that expresses concern over the USA Patriot Act's potential harm to civil liberties and individual rights."

"The council's 4-3 vote in favor of the resolution makes the borough the second New Jersey municipality to adopt a measure critical of the Patriot Act, the federal anti-terrorism bill passed after the Sept. 11 attacks."

"Willingboro's township council unanimously passed a resolution last month that made that community the first in New Jersey to take an official stance critical of the Patriot Act, Willingboro Councilman James Ayrer said." ...

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
"Some people think that the Second Amendment is an outdated relic of an earlier time. Doubtless some also think that constitutional protections of other rights are outdated relics of earlier times. We The People own those rights regardless, unless and until We The People repeal them. For those who believe it to be outdated, the Second Amendment provides a good test of whether their allegiance is really to the Constitution of the United States, or only to their preferences in public policies and audiences. The Constitution is law, not vague aspirations, and we are obligated to protect, defend, and apply it. If the Second Amendment were truly an outdated relic, the Constitution provides a method for repeal. The Constitution does not furnish the federal courts with an eraser." --9th Circuit Court Judge Andrew Kleinfeld, dissenting opinion in which the court refused to rehear the case while citing deeply flawed anti-Second Amendment nonsense (Nordyke v. King; opinion filed April 5, 2004)
