Ralph Fascitelli, a member of the gun control group Washington Ceasefire, want Democrats to embrace gun control and make it an issue in this election. He says they are the party of "progressive stands on social issues". He is upset that the Democrats aren't saying more about gun control on the campaign trail and in their official platform.

A proposed 5-cent tax on every bullet sold in Cook County has been dropped by Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle.
The ammo tax will not be in next year’s proposed county budget after all, Preckwinkle announced Wednesday, but she will retain the planned $25 tax on all firearms sales. A spokesman for Preckwinkle said the ammo tax was met with “concerns” by some commissioners. |

As you read this column, Election Day 2012 is imminent. Hard as it may be for some of you to believe, that are going to be a fairly large number of people who regularly read SGN who either considering voting for Obama, or perhaps not voting at all. Please: unless you are looking forward to America being in civil war or something like the terrifying future of the movie Mad Max, you must do your best to help defeat Obama.
Why, you are asking, would anyone who cares about guns vote for Obama? After the 2008 election, I received letters from readers asking what Obama had done to make any gun owner skeptical of him.

According to the Washington Times, Issa's latest committee report "divulged for the first time that Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr.’s office originally planned for him to go to Arizona to announce the results of the Fast and Furious investigation before Justice Department officials abruptly dropped the idea when guns from the operation showed up at the murder scene of the border agent."
This confirms that the operation was being treated as a media matter; the logical purpose of an AG press conference is not merely to announce arrests (that could be done in a press release) but to push the theme of "we need more gun laws because American guns are going to Mexican cartels." |

When I was coming up, NRA promulgated the “10 Commandments of Gun Safety.” They’ve since marked that down to about four, since it is thought kids can’t remember 10 things, and I might have trouble remembering all 10 myself.
Celebratory gunfire is a tradition in the Arab world, the Balkans and Mediterranean countries like Crete and Cyprus. It’s not at all unknown in immigrant communities in this country, especially in Southern California.

One Newton County parent is incensed that her 8-year-old son has been suspended pending a tribunal for accidentally bringing a BB gun to school and turning it over to administrators when he realized his mistake, but according to zero tolerance policy and law, how the situation is handled is largely out of the hands of Newton County school officials.
A Newton County Theme School third grader was suspended last Monday for accidentally bringing an unloaded pellet gun to school. Kristy Berry, the child's mother spoke to the Atlanta Journal Constitution telling them that her son did the right thing by turning in his weapon when he realized he had left it in his book bag after a weekend stay with his grandfather. |

An academic adviser at the University of Colorado has posted a sign outside his office asking that students don't bring guns inside -- a request that university officials say is legally allowable as long as he doesn't withhold services from those with concealed-carry permits.
About a year ago, when CU's long-standing gun ban was being challenged in court, economics adviser Ken Bonetti posted a sign that stated absolutely no guns, concealed or otherwise, were allowed inside his office. Since then, the campus gun ban has been struck down by the state Supreme Court. |

The top executive of the county that includes Chicago on Wednesday dropped a proposed tax on bullets but kept a plan to tax firearms to help defray healthcare expenses associated with the high rate of gun violence.
If approved by the board, the nation's third most populous county could be the first major U.S. metropolitan area to impose a tax as a form of gun control, according to the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.
Under the plan, the County would impose a $25 tax on the purchase of firearms. The tax is expected to raise $600,000 in revenue in 2013. |

Two men are at large and third was hospitalized Tuesday after a homeowner fired a handgun at home invaders. A man, woman and child were inside the home when the man opened the door for an acquaintance. When he did, three adult men rushed inside the home, one of them armed with a gun. The homeowner then grabbed a handgun and fired multiple rounds at the suspects, who fled the scene. One man believed to have been involved in the incident later arrived at St. Mark's Hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg. |

Larry Davis, 22, of Kansas City, was found guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Davis was in possession of a Romarm 7.62 x 39mm rifle on Jan. 26, 2012. Under federal law, it is illegal for anyone who has been convicted of a felony to be in possession of any firearm or ammunition.
Kansas City police officers responded to reports of a shooting at the intersection of 61st and College at approximately 4 p.m. on Jan. 26, 2012. The victim, located in the driver’s seat of a Hyundai, was pronounced dead with an apparent gunshot wound to his head. .

Iowa has joined Texas in warning international election observers of possible criminal prosecution if they violate state laws and get near polling places on Election Day.
