"A group of National Rifle Association instructors in Portland wants sexual minorities to arm themselves. The theory is that if would-be hate crime perpetrators knew a sizable percentage of the gay community was armed, the number of such crimes would drop." Jeff Brady reports.

Imposed Oct. 31 -- Without a court order, Attorney General John Ashcroft can approve electronic surveillance of attorneys and their clients for up to one year if he believes the conversations could threaten national security or cause someone's death or injury.

"This is an unprecedented power grab that is at odds with the Constitution," said Randall Marshall of the ACLU.

A program that distributed thousands of gun locks to Texans will be extended another year with a $500,000 grant from the governor's office.

Gov. Rick Perry's office plans to announce Monday it is providing the money to pay for 390,000 additional child safety gun locks to be given out free by local law enforcement agencies.

Oklahoma City's MetroTransit buses have armed security officers riding shotgun on randomly selected routes.

System officials decided to add the protection after driver Linda K. Imoe was attacked by a rock-wielding man on her bus.

KABA NOTE: So they admit that firearms in the hands of good guys reduce crime.

On Sunday, November 11th, the newly-launched Firearms Law Center (http://www.firearmslawcenter.org) will commence an ad campaign to educate Californians in central and southern California about their ability to pass their own laws "to reduce gun-related injuries and deaths."

As the gun industry continues to oppose "modest regulations," the Firearms Law Center is poised to offer a solution to the "gun legislation gridlock" across the country.

About 400 students were suspended from public schools in the first half of this year for possessing a weapon, prompting the Education Department to step up its crime prevention program.

The Education Minister, John Aquilina, said workshops at schools, run jointly with NSW police, would reinforce to students that "weapons would not be tolerated."

In victories for supporters of responsible gun laws, and defeats for the National Rifle Association (NRA), voters in New Jersey and Virginia yesterday elected candidates for governor who support "sensible gun safety legislation."

"The victories by Jim McGreevey in New Jersey and Mark Warner in Virginia demonstrate once again that our nation's citizens want common-sense gun laws and they want elected officials who will preserve them," said Sarah Brady.

"Bosnia-Herzegovina officials collected more than 3,040 small arms and 686,486 rounds of ammunition as part of a program that gives civilians amnesty for turning in their guns."

Current Bosnia law prohibits residents from having weapons unless they have approval from authorities and international peacekeepers.

The weapons collected were handed over to local and international authorities.

Thousands of Hillsborough and Pinellas County third-graders get a course in firearm safety from Cease Fire Tampa Bay each year. And about six times a year, the same group holds evening courses that include parents, said Nancy Crane, of More Health, a Tampa General Hospital group that helps conduct the programs.

"A rise in serious crimes, as well as a series of incidents this year in which police officers have been killed in the line of duty, have prompted the NPA to issue guidelines that better define the circumstances in which a firearm may be used," agency officials said.

"Many observers say the move effectively relaxes the rules regarding the use of weapons by officers in self-defense."

McGreevey was the endorsed candidate (for Governor) of the Teachers' Union.

Coupled with gun control and abortion rights, McGreevey used the issue of education to portray Schundler as being out of touch with the state's mainstream values.

--And as we know, McGreevey is anti-gun. So what does that say about the "teachers' union"?

A Newsweek (!) online story about Americans holstering up since September 11. The people arm while the gun-grabbers fume, whine, and lie.

The Brazos County district attorney’s office may be getting a new weapon in the battle against gun crime.

District Attorney Bill Turner is applying for a Department of Justice grant to fund a new gun violence prosecutor’s position.

The new attorney would handle all gun-related cases, which Turner says has become a full-time job.
