"Since the Columbine murders in 1999, several important steps have been taken to prevent or thwart school shootings. Much more still needs to be done." ...

"Some people who do not like the idea of teachers being armed to protect students simply get indignant, or declare that armed teachers are inconsistent with a learning environment. I suggest that dead students — and the traumatic aftermath of a school attack — are far more inconsistent with a learning environment than is a math teacher having a concealed handgun." ...

John McCain, R-Ariz., and his political team have decided it's full steam ahead for his 2008 presidential campaign. Although no absolute, final decision has been made, sources close to McCain say on Wednesday in Phoenix, he and a half dozen of his top aides huddled and decided to proceed more formally with his quest for the White House." ...

"... It is certainly of the last Consequence to a free Country, that the Militia which is its natural Strength, should be kept upon the most advantageous Footing. A standing Army, however necessary it may be at some times, is always dangerous to the Liberties of the People. . . .They have their Arms always in their hands. . . .Such a Power should be watchd with a jealouse Eye..."

"...The Militia is composd of free Citizens. There is therefore no Danger of their making Use of their Power to the Destruction of their own Rights, or suffering others to invade them. . . .and deeply impressd with a Sense of that indespensible Obligation which every Individual is under to the whole Society...."

"Last Tuesday the citizens of this great nation went to the polls and repudiated monolithic one-party rule."

"It must have sent a chill down David Stern's spine."

"The commish doesn't want his minions to get any ideas, lest he need to violently wield his iron scepter to remind them who is king. ..."

"But what if the world's greatest athletes decided they'd had enough of being bullied? Enough of being told how to dress. Enough of being told to shut up. Enough of being told to forsake their second amendment rights. What if the NBA Players Association decided enough was enough and demanded a new vision (and a new visionary) for the league?" ...

"A tower of power, he stands 7 feet 1 inch, weighs 325 pounds, and bears a tattoo of Superman's signature "S" on his massive left arm. Yet NBA great Shaquille O'Neal protects himself off the basketball court with more than his physical might and inky bond with the Man of Steel."

"He is licensed to carry a concealed weapon."

"So are many other American sports figures, including NBA stars Paul Pierce and Vince Carter, NFL standouts Edgerrin James, Marvin Harrison, and Daunte Culpepper, and New York Yankee pitcher Carl Pavano, according to players and a Globe review of concealed weapon permits in states where the names of license holders are public record." ...

"The Cleveland Plain Dealer is reporting that Betty Montgomery, the supposedly unbeatable anti-gun Republican, was so stunned after her defeat by BUuckeye Firearms Association-endorsee Marc Dann (52.3% to 47.7% percent) that she didn't concede until 3 p.m. Wednesday. By then, the newspaper reports, she had jetted off to Florida and was declining to take phone calls." ...

"As the OhioGOP sets about to examine 'what went wrong' this November, I would respectfully offer headlines and stories like these as Exhibit 1 for why Betty Montgomery received 167,618 fewer votes than Mr. Dann (over one half-million people hold hunting and concealed handgun licenses in Ohio):" ...

"The Democrats' stated goals are to ensure that constitutional protections are extended to noncitizen terrorists and enemy combatants, repeal the tax breaks that have put a few extra bucks in your pocket to fund 'socialized medicine' and abrogate (repeal) everyone's Second Amendment rights."

"When it all comes crashing down, when we suffer another 9/11 due to lack of intelligence gathering from terrorist prisoners, when the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives gestapo kicks in your door to seize your deer rifle and bird gun, you can thank the [Democratic Leadership] ..."

"The arrest and search warrants were the result of an eight-month investigation relating to the unlawful manufacture, possession and transfer of machine guns, Banks said."

"A machine gun that can fire 550 rounds a minute and assorted 9 mm Sten submachine guns are stored in the Washington County militia's concrete and steel vault ... "A submachine gun and other SWAT team weapons were stolen late Thursday or early today from an Orange County deputy's car."

"The weapons were stored in an unmarked vehicle ..."

"'Obviously these are very, very serious military grade weapons,' said sheriff's spokesman Jim Solomons. 'If whoever took these weapons did it as a lark, they should reconsider and call Crimeline to return them anonymously. It's paramount that we get these off the street as quickly as possible.'"

"The .45-cal HK Ump 45 submachine gun particularly concerns authorities because it was outfitted with a silencer. That means it can fire a 25-shot clip of ammunition almost soundlessly and without drawing attention to the shooter." ...

"A firearm is more than a tool with which to fire off rounds at paper targets or game animals. Often, a gun is a family heirloom, a gift from a dad or a grandfather, something to be admired, cherished, and shot often."

"It takes some work to keep that firearm in the best condition possible, but according to long time Grand Haven gunsmith Joe Fricano, sometimes more is less."

"In fact, Fricano's most basic piece of advice to gun owners is this: Leave it in the car."

"'When I'm done shooting, I leave my gun locked up in the trunk of my car,' Fricano said. 'If you bring it in and out, the gun will rust.'" ...

"It's the second time this week a Georgia child has died after finding a gun in a home. Police say on Wedneday a three-year-old in Atlanta shot himself when he discovered the unlocked firearm in a back bedroom. On Sunday, a five-year-old Cherokee County girl accidentally was shot by her three-year-old brother when he found a pistol under their parents' mattress."

"After learning about these preventable deaths news 3's Dianne Derby found out what you can do to keep you and your loved ones safe." ...

KABA Note: I'm sorry Ms. Derby, but locking up your protection is a distinctly unsafe thing to do, and also does not protect your children when they find an unlocked gun elsewhere.

"Re: John Henke's Oct. 16 letter, 'Gun laws unconstitutional':"

"I refer Henke to the text of the Second Amendment: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

"The following excerpt from a 1942 case makes it clear that gun rights apply only to the need for a militia ..."

"The Second Amendment surely does not allow guns in the hands of criminals or those who attack children in schools. Henke should be aware that countries like China and Japan, which have strict gun control, have a minuscule fraction of the murders that occur annually in the United States." ...
-------

Submitter's Note: And Switzerland, which virtually requires every head of household to own an assault rifle, also has "a minuscule fraction of the murders that occur annually in the United States." Correllation does not show causality.

"Kern County gives out more permits to carry concealed weapons than any other county in the state, and has led the state in citizens who like to pack heat for at least the last 10 years."

"Last year, 4,077 Kern County residents had the right to carry a hidden gun on them, according to the California Attorney General's office. Another Central Valley county, Fresno, came in a distant second, with 2,694 permits."
