November 11 is known across the country as Veteran’s Day, a federal holiday that originally was known as Armistice Day to commemorate the cessation of hostilities at 11 a.m. on that date in World War I, ending on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
But for those hardy souls whose ancestors came to settle in the Evergreen State, Nov. 11 is also Washington State’s birthday. Washington achieved statehood in 1889, named after the first U.S. president, and the 18th largest state in the union, according to a history at Wikipedia. |

For both pistol and rifle ammunition, nickel-plated brass casings offer a unique spin on the standard brass or steel casings. When it comes to nickel vs. brass, nickel-plated brass looks nicer than standard brass casings and can be reloaded – making it a great choice for someone looking for an aesthetically pleasing and functional cartridge case. Remington, Federal and Hornady are noted for using nickel-plated ammo in their premium lines. |

Not all handguns achieve the status of icon. Interestingly, the two most successful iconic handguns both came from Colt. They are the 1873 Peacemaker revolver and the 1911 semi-auto pistol. Both have stayed in production worldwide for well over 100 years with early models commanding impressive prices in the collectors’ market. Colt is betting that its Python revolver will achieve that same elite status. Terminating production has resulted in the price of original Pythons skyrocketing, and the company believes that reopening a production line with a more modern copy will ensure that the classy double-action revolver will ultimately pass the test of time. |

On 7 October 2020, a Colville, Washington man was checking game cameras in the area near Rocky Creek Road. The sun had set seven minutes earlier, but the sky was clear. The fading glow from the sun, in a clear sky, illuminated the woods. There was no wind. As he approached a game camera in an area outside of cell phone coverage, he felt as if eyes were upon him. Looking ahead, he saw wolves 30 yards away. The pack showed members 30 yards ahead of him, to the sides, and at least one wolf partially obscured but close behind him. |

New Hampshire-based Sig Sauer on Monday announced their TANGO6T riflescope, already popular with the military, is slated to become the U.S. Army's new Direct View Optic for use on M4A1 carbines. The TANGO6T variable powered 1-6x24 DVO is a first focal plane ruggedized riflescope with a flat dark earth anodized aircraft-grade aluminum main tube, with a magnification that allows either relatively close-quarter shots or use against more distant targets. The optic is already in use with the Army on the new 7.62 NATO Squad Designated Marksman Rifle and with SOCOM as the Squad-Variable Powered Scope or S-VPS.

Minnesota deer hunters had a very slow opening weekend across much of the state, registering only 59,711 deer after the first two days of the season — down 21% from the 2019 harvest at the same time. The unexpectedly low deer harvest is 16% below the five-year average and has wildlife biologists scratching their heads. Many had predicted a good season this year, and definitely up from a slower-than-average 2019 across most of the state. |

Mark and Patricia McCloskey, the St. Louis couple who went viral in late June after waving guns at protestors marching near their home, have filed a lawsuit against a news photographer they claim trespassed on their property in order to capture a picture of that tense confrontation. The McCloskeys, both of whom are lawyers, filed the suit against United Press International (UPI) photographer Bill Greenblatt, in addition to also naming that wire service, on Friday in St. Louis Circuit Court.

When people think about hunting in the big woods of the north, they envision hunters dressed in their classic wool clothing taking to the snow-covered forest in search of a buck track to follow. Many hunters from Maine to Minnesota would rather be on the track of a buck when there is snow on the ground, than to hunt any other way. We cannot control when and where the snow might fall, and in some states the season is short, so tracking might not even be an option. In that case, a second choice for many hunters is to climb into a tree stand or crawl into a ground blind and wait for a buck to pass by. I have been guiding deer hunters in the big woods for 30 years and have had great success with stand hunting. |

Have you impulse-bought any rifles recently? I like to think I plan such purchases sensibly and rationally, determining needs, comparing features and prices, knowing pretty much what I want before ever going to the gun store. Buying a rifle on the spur of the moment seems like grabbing a pepperoni stick at the grocery store checkout just because it is handy.
