"The fact is, Brazil could be looked at as a laboratory of sorts to help determine the effectiveness of citizen disarmament proposals being made for the United States under the guise of 'common sense' measures that promise to reduce the violence."

Submitters note: And guess who they think the lab rats are?

"Obama, of course, knows all this. It's why names like these would be foremost in his considerations and reflects that new-found 'flexibility' he perceives is his as the restrictions that have always been his goal emerge from 'under the radar.' He's counting on a supportive media and an establishment Republican leadership that time and again through the years has equated appeasement with pragmatism. He's counting on an attorney general that will help him push whatever he wants through the courts and he's counting on Supreme Court replacements that will let him get away with it."

“'Profiles in apathy' has long been a theme expressed here, and should rightfully be considered as great an enemy of freedom as the most rabid of gun-grabbers. That gun owners must organize and pool their strength together is a given, and that so many ignore the call to muster and instead draw their curtains while others march to the green does more to give aid and comfort to their attackers than anything."

NY: Sandy brings the Third World to the USA’s urban dependency culture

So when a storm hits the deeply blue northeastern United States, where urban dependency is as deeply entrenched as it was in pre-Katrina New Orleans, is it really surprising that it brings Third World living conditions to an area accustomed to being looked after and provided for ad nauseum?

..."businesses are shuttered, leaving local residents unable to get basic necessities like food, medicine, or even do laundry. Once the sun goes down, residents say it’s too dangerous to venture out anyway."

An 83-year-old man was allegedly the victim of a beating by a man 50 years younger than him in what Rocklin police are calling a road rage rampage.
Police said the incident started around 10 a.m. Saturday when the suspect, identified as 33-year-old Zubin Bogdanoff, didn’t like the way the elderly man was driving. Bogdanoff allegedly followed the man a half mile to his home and confronted him in his garage.
Several neighbors were witness to the violent incident. ...
When police responded to the victim’s home on the 6000 block of Bridal Veil Drive, they discovered the man suffering significant injuries.

Submitter's comment: Too bad none of the neighbors was armed.

Product Review: Esbit Pocket Stove

The Esbit Pocket Stove is a tiny and lightweight foldable stove for backpackers and others who want a small stove without packing a lot of weight. About the size of a deck of cards, it weighs only a couple of ounces.

The stove itself sells for about $10 and the Esbit fuel cubes come in boxes of a dozen for about $6. The fuel blocks have a bit of an offensive odor, so I recommend storing them in a quart-sized heavy duty freezer bag (or better still, double bag them).

...I decided, almost on a whim, to give it a test run and I’m glad I did. Frankly, I expected the manufacturer’s claims to be accurate as to this diminutive stove’s capabilities but I came away very disappointed.

Ed.: This little stoves are nice for a fresh cup of coffee at the range.

Revisiting a classic editorial: “War on Terror” doomed to failure

...Your “war on terrorism” can never be a total success and I’ll tell you why: there will always be fanatics willing to kill innocent people.

...It is clear that in the real world, extremists like suicide bombers and pacifists have deeply flawed beliefs. This doesn’t stop an aberrant few from still becoming convinced that either of these positions are the means to a “better” world.

The proven solution in dealing with violent people of any stripe is to allow qualified, law-abiding people carry firearms for self-defense. Scientific studies have shown that permitting licensed, law-abiding residents to carry a firearm on their person reduces violent crime, including crime sprees by nutcases...

IL: Quite a contrast: Chicago elects corrupt pols, downstate IL votes for right-to-carry

The contrast in Illinois is stark.

Urban dependency culture voters in Chicago vote for Santa Claus in the form of Democrats, even when those Democrats are under federal investigation for corruption and various scandals.

...While Chicago voters are voting for more of the same for themselves, the rest of Illinois is quite another story as ten counties voted to allow right-to-carry. Sadly though, while the "voters have spoken", in this case they are only advisory referendums.

A 14-year-old girl walking to school in an average neighborhood in Chicago is abducted by six male savages in a car, taken somewhere and gang raped.

Does this sound like a city you would want to visit to spend time for vacation or business, much less a place you would like to live?

It sure doesn’t for us.

Owners of guns have been stocking up because they are concerned about a potential tightening of regulations on assault weapons in the president's second term.
In October the number of background checks on people applying to buy guns, an indicator of future sales, increased by 18.4 per cent.
There was a similar jump when President Obama was first elected in 2008. A total of 12.7 million background checks were carried out that year, up from 11.2 million the year before, and the number has been rising since then.
Shares in weapons manufacturers like Smith & Wesson and Sturm, Ruger also surged after Mr Obama's re-election.

A Manhattan pedestrian says he was victimized twice — once when a NYPD car struck him, then when the city billed him for damage to the police vehicle.
Jesse Zorski, 25, a tailor who works in fashion design, was struck the night of April 12 as he crossed Centre St. at White St.
The police car, he said, struck his left leg, then he smashed into the side-view mirror and hit the ground, landing on his wrist.

Gun manufacturer stocks are a hot commodity on Wall Street in the wake of Tuesday's election.

Gun shop owners are reaping the benefits, too.

Some are selling ten times what they normally do as customers load up.

"Our ammo and our guns have literally been flying off the shelf," says Rich Chatmas, co-owner of The Gun Cleaners in Waco, Texas.

In the six Hudson Valley counties north of New York City, 14,293 people received handgun permits in the last five years. Vincent Acocella was one of them. The retired Pearl River architect believes in staunch gun control laws. He said the last thing New York or any state needs is anyone walking in off the street to pick up a handgun with no questions asked. But a couple years ago, the 69-year-old Acocella went through all the necessary paperwork, the gathering of references, and the gun safety course required for a permit in Rockland County. "I like to shoot," he said. "It's fun. I've been a hunter for 50 years. I'm getting on in years and I thought it might be easier to hunt with a handgun than with a rifle."

Armed with nothing more than the web and Facebook, Brown formed Students for Concealed Carry from his dorm room. Today, SCC has become a national, nonpartisan, grassroots organization consisting of roughly 40,000 members in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Less than 24-hours ago in Alcalde, New Mexico a randy 33-year-old tough guy named Lawrence Sandoval from nearby Taos, NM, thought he was going to have his way with an innocent woman who struck his fancy at the local gas station.

He followed her home, and then barged his way into her home, armed with a knife.

The victim told deputies that the two ended up in her bedroom where lusty Larry told her to strip.

The story doesn’t say if she followed through with his demand, but we do know she produced a pistol from under her pillow and perforated the perpetrator.

Lusty Larry learned his locution was just as faulty as the rest of his “dating” paradigm. Perhaps he pondered that point as he lay on the floor bleeding out.

The task force studying Florida’s “stand your ground” law didn’t go into hiding during the election. It just seemed that way.

On Tuesday, however, the task force will hold its final meeting in Pensacola. After a public comment period, the members of the task force will discuss what recommendations, if any, to send the Legislature regarding the state’s controversial 2005 law.

Kudos to Louisianans who on Nov. 6 overwhelmingly voted for Proposition Two, an amendment to their state’s constitution that solidifies the Second Amendment in the state of Louisiana.

The new law says that “the right to keep and bear arms is a fundamental right” and would require courts to apply “the highest standard” of law when and if state municipalities enact laws that act in violation of the second amendment.

Weekend reaction to this column’s story about an Arizona-based firearms retailer who is refusing service to people who voted for Barack Obama has been striking and among the criticisms of gun dealer Cope Reynolds were those that wondered what would happen if businesses decided to not allow armed citizens inside?

Actually, there have been such prohibitions for years. In the wake of gun law reform in Minnesota, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Michigan and elsewhere, the gun ban lobby actively encouraged businesses to post their establishments off limits to legally-armed citizens.

We take for granted what we have. You say the Second Amendment is out of date? Do you not think we should have the right to keep ourselves protected? Even if you take that right away, the people we don’t want to have these firearms will still find ways to get them. We have a right to protect ourselves. There are people in the country who shouldn’t be here, who want to hurt Americans because of the way we run our country, and they are able to smuggle weapons in here. We have the right to bear arms because you don’t want to be the one bringing a knife to a gunfight.

To question the NRA's strict pro-gun policy invites howls of protest. Gun-buying groups blacklist detractors. During the 2008 presidential campaign, Barack Obama stirred up a hornets nest from the NRA. He asked at a fundraiser in San Francisco whether our society flourished when fearful citizens “cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them.”

Gun enthusiasts rejected Obama's caution. They ignored statistics about gun violence in the United States. The gun homicide rate per capita in our nation is 30 times more than that of Great Britain and Australia, 10 times more than in India, and four times more than Switzerland's rate.

Have you got your gun yet? Millions of your neighbors have.

Americans have always loved their guns, but lately they are loading up more than ever.

U.S. civilians lead the world in private gun ownership: They own an estimated 270 million guns—nine privately owned firearms for every 10 people.

How much sense does this make? And if you have any common sense, you’ll answer “none.”

An 18-year-old can openly carry a loaded gun in Overland Park without going through background checks by the state or additional firearms safety training required for concealed carry. But a person 21 or older would have to jump through such training and safety hoops to conceal and carry.

Yes, the younger, more likely less mature gun owner is freer to pack heat openly.

Titled the "Louisiana Right To Bear Arms, Amendment 2 (2012)," the amendment passed 73.45 percent to 26.55. Louisiana residents are fiercely protective of their right to bear arms. Voters overwhelmingly agreed to set a tougher standard for restricting the use of weapons and to remove a provision that gives the Legislature explicit authority to limit concealed handguns. The constitutional amendment won support from 73 percent of voters. Expect it to be a model that the NRA will push in other states.
