The 2016 election delivered a number of wins for gun rights activists across the country.
Though Donald Trump’s presidential victory represents the greatest opportunity for policy changes that have widespread impact, there were many unexpected wins at the state and local levels. The National Rifle Association won in nearly every race where it invested money.
The NRA spent more than $30.3 million in the presidential race, up from just over $12 million in 2012. $19.7 million of that went to opposing Hillary Clinton and $10.6 million went to supporting Donald Trump, according to an analysis of Federal Election Commission documents by the Center for Responsive Politics. |

There are precious few “Guns Saving Lives” stories from New Jersey, for the simple reason that the government of New Jersey told subjects there (they are not treated as citizens) that they don’t have the human right to bear arms in self defense. The subjects accepted their laws, ceded their rights, and New Jersey concealed carry permits issued to non-officers are as rare as unicorns.
We’re glad that these two criminals are off the street, but wish all New Jersey citizens had the practical right to bear arms, and not just a favored few in protected classes. |

With that in mind, here is a suggestion for anyone who feels newly “unsafe” in the United States of America: buy some guns and train yourself well how to use them.
Seriously—do it. There are few better ways to protect yourself against violence, terrorism, and oppression than firearms. Ida B. Wells knew it, as did Frederick Douglass—two Americans who had more than enough reason to feel “unsafe” throughout their lives. |

In the short term, we can expect NICS background checks to slow resulting in lower total numbers. The sale of pistols, Modern Sporting Rifles (semi-automatic rifles) and ammunition will soften. Consumers are not going to feel any sense of urgency to buy guns like they had after the previous two elections.
It is ironic that both Smith & Wesson and Ruger’s share prices have fallen significantly (both dropped approximately 15% over the last week) on what is ultimately good news for the industry. Investors had assumed a Clinton win which would have led to yet another round of panic gun buying in the short term. The share price fall has wiped $230 million off the market cap of S&W and about $130 million off Ruger. |

It was a pitch that found a welcome audience among Americans primed by years of bilious NRA rhetoric. Rage at elites has long been the crucial context for the organization’s gun rights message, the force it has used to mobilize its membership. It’s not just that gun rights must be protected, NRA leaders argue — it’s that they must be defended from political leaders and journalists who have contempt for everyday people’s values and ideas of how America should look. |

Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump -- who said he has a concealed carry permit -- called for the expansion of gun rights Friday, including making those permits applicable nationwide. In a position paper published on his website Friday afternoon, Trump called for the elimination of gun and magazine bans, labeling them a "total failure."
"Law-abiding people should be allowed to own the firearm of their choice. The government has no business dictating what types of firearms good, honest people are allowed to own," Trump wrote. |

A ballot referendum to establish Extreme Risk Protection Orders was overwhelmingly approved by voters in the Evergreen State after a $4 million campaign by gun control advocates.
The lengthy 21-page proposal, I-1491, will allow a family member to file a petition with the court for a judge to decide if a subject poses a threat to themselves or others. This could lead to an order prohibiting firearms possession for up to one year, and could be renewed annually. The subject of the order can request a hearing once a year to rescind the order while those filing false petitions would set themselves up for a criminal penalty. |

When urban gun violence happens, it affects local businesses and economies. This seems pretty intuitive, but the Urban Institute decided to connect the dots just in case there was any doubt. The study, entitled “The Effect of Gun Violence on Local Economies,” points out that “an increase in gun homicides or gunfire in neighborhoods can lower the number of establishments, employment in establishments, and sales in establishments.” |

Given that Tensing is charged with a deliberate killing offense and that he has raised the legal defense of self-defense, the question naturally arises: who has the burden of proving/disproving self-defense, and by what standard of proof (amount of evidence)?
In forty-nine states, all but Ohio, once a defendant has raised the legal defense of self-defense it becomes the responsibility of the prosecution to disprove self-defense beyond a reasonable doubt. There’s not accepted mathematical figure for how much evidence constitutes “beyond a reasonable doubt,” but it is an overwhelming majority of the evidence. |

The male homeowner was sleeping on a couch in an office area in the basement when he heard someone trying to enter through a window. The 28 year old intruder also had tried to get in a side door and apparently burglarized two vehicles in the driveway.
That was before trying to break into the house and encountering the armed homeowner. The homeowner’s wife called 911 reporting that someone was trying to break into the house. |

There are nearly 300,000 active concealed carry permits in Arizona.
The experts at Shooter's World in Phoenix say the first thing you'll do is sign up for a class, which is required by the law.
The classes are usually taught by an NRA instructor.
In that class, students will learn the fundamentals of the pistol, how to pull a trigger and how to hit a target accurately. |

Attorney Chuck Michel, who is also the president of the California Rifle and Pistol Association (CRPA), claims that now – with a Republican president in office – is the time to take legal action against Proposition 63 and other questionable gun laws.
“With our victory in the presidential election, successful legal challenges will now be filed against all these new ill-conceived and unconstitutional laws, and those cases will be heard by a new Supreme Court that will see these laws as the Second Amendment violations that they are,” explained Michel in an official statement on Wednesday. |

On August 1, a Texas law went into effect allowing concealed carry of firearms on public college campuses. Will Oklahoma be next?
Since 2011, the Oklahoma Self Defense Act has allowed concealed carry license holders to secure their firearms in their vehicles in campus parking lots. Licensees may request permission from the college president to carry their firearm on campus on a case-by-case basis.
The process at TCC involves a written request to the president, a background check, and clear documentation of the threat to the requestor. College policy is that requests will be reviewed within 30 days. |

The largest gun control group in the country, whose benefactor spent millions on various candidates and initiatives this election cycle with mixed results, is not a fan of Trump’s remarks on guns.
“Here are some of the ghastly things Donald Trump promised the NRA,” the group posted Friday to social media with the above clip which shows various soundbites of the new President-elect and his feelings on gun politics. In the short vid, he talks about dropping gun free zones at schools and on military bases as well as repealing President Obama’s executive orders on firearms. |

Voters in the Oak Park Township of Illinois definitely have a strange way of initiating a conversation about gun control.
In a non-binding referendum introduced by Oak Park resident Piergiorgio “George” Uslenghi, voters were asked a question that read, “Shall the Constitution of the United States be amended as follows? The second article of amendment to the Constitution of the United States is repealed. The United States Congress shall regulate the licensing and use of arms.” |

In a brief dated November 7, 2016, submitted in the Appellate case of State v. Lambert, the Office of the Attorney General concedes that New Jersey’s Stun Gun Ban is unconstitutional, stating:
“[T]he State agrees with defendant that New Jersey’s stun-gun statute, N.J.S.A. 2C:39-3h, is unconstitutional in light of Caetano v. Massachusetts, 136 S.Ct. 1027 (2016), and defendant’s conviction under that statute should be vacated in the interests of justice.” |

Bob Lee Swagger just won't die.
Since his 1993 debut in Baltimore author Stephen Hunter's best-selling thriller "Point of Impact," the ex-Marine sniper has been featured in eight more novels and a 2007 feature film starring Mark Wahlberg.
And Tuesday night, he arrives on television in a 10-hour series, "Shooter," starring Ryan Phillippe on cable channel USA. Produced by Wahlberg and co-starring Omar Epps, this is not only quality drama — it's a series that speaks with the same kind of cultural resonance to Donald Trump's America in 2016 that Hunter's original creation did to Bill Clinton's. |

Dave Smith, a well known author and expert on bear attacks, sent me a heads up on a proposed Grizzly hunting regulation. In the Wyoming Grizzly Bear Management Plan(pdf), on page 47, (page 55 on some pdf versions), dated 5/11/2016, is a regulation requiring that grizzly hunters carry bear spray.
“All grizzly bear hunters must carry bear spray while engaged in the act of grizzly bear hunting (WGFC Regulation Chapter 16, pending)”
When you are hunting bears, you would normally be carrying a rifle. You would have to drop the rifle, then access and deploy the bear spray. That does not work. |

So what could have made the electorate choose the candidate not so favored? It must have been on issues. One of the major differences between Trump and Clinton was gun control. She wanted to take on the National Rifle Association and proposed additional infringements on the Second Amendment. She even criticized the Supreme Court for the Heller decision.
Some of the key states, like Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan, have a large percentage of hunters and gun owners who believe their right to keep and bear arms is a very important issue. They went to the polls to assert their rights and proved that freedom is a voting issue. It provided a significant difference in the results. |

In the wee hours of the morning of November 9 2016, a collective sigh of relief flowed from the hearts of millions of American gun owners.
Hillary Clinton and the Democrat party had pushed gun control as a major issue in the election, raising serious anxiety among GunVoters.
In the end, that GunVoter concern exacted a heavy toll.
While GunVoters can’t take sole credit for Hillary Clinton’s defeat, we can be proud that we played a substantial role in it – probably more significant than the pundits will ever admit. |

To everyday Americans, with the normal concerns of everyday life, the Democrats bizarre fixation on issues like transgender bathrooms for teenagers, and their outright hostility to the beliefs most Americans take for granted – religious freedom or national sovereignty or the Second Amendment — was almost incomprehensible.
For that, the Democrats called them racists, misogynists, homophobes, Islamophobes and any number of other insults heaped into Hillary’s infamous “basket of deplorables.” |
