Must be a really safe place, Australia -- where self-defense is banned and they need hundreds more officers. ...
-------
"A second-term Labor Government will spend $263 million to recruit 600 extra police and build 68 new police stations, as Premier Steve Bracks yesterday promised to ensure Victoria remained Australia's safest state."

"Launching the first part of Labor's law and order policy, Mr Bracks said the 600 police would be recruited over four years, at a cost of $125 million."

"After adding 800 police during its first term, Mr Bracks said Labor's promise of a further 600 would bring police numbers to a record high of 10,900." ...

"Iain Duncan Smith today launched a pre-emptive attack on the government's record on crime - expected to be the lynchpin of tomorrow's Queen's speech."

"Speaking at a private drug treatment centre in west London, the Conservative leader claimed law and order in Britain was 'on the verge of collapse'."

"Seeking to move the agenda on from his own troubled leadership of the party, Mr Duncan Smith said Labour's push on crime and the courts in tomorrow's Queen's speech would be an 'empty gesture'."

" 'After five years of Labour, law and order in Britain is on the verge of collapse,' he said."

" 'A crime is committed every five seconds, detection rates have fallen by 28% and criminals have a 97.5% chance of not being caught and convicted.' " ...

And self-defense is BANNED in the United Kingdom.

Within an article about potential imminent terrorist threats comes this tidbit (seventh paragraph from the top) on the deterrent effect of armed people:
"He [Pakastani national, Mir Ahmad Kasi, who murdered two CIA agents in 1993 outside CIA headquarters] indicated that he was going to take people out at either the CIA or the Israeli Embassy, but he chose the CIA because he felt there would be fewer people around with weapons."

"Children are learning lessons about gun safety and the dangers of drugs and alcohol through the Eddie Eagle program." ...

"The program is used by law enforcement agencies and organizations concerned with the safety of children, including Beard Elementary in Fort Smith."

"At Beard, representatives of the Sebastian County Sheriff's Department work with children to make them understand the ramifications of drug and alcohol use and the unsupervised use of firearms." ...

QUESTION...

How many of us grew up with near-complete "unsupervised use of firearms"?

The issue is one of responsibility and training -- not hiding and scaring.

"A TOP cop has given a stark warning that people carrying fake guns could be shot dead."

"You must expect armed police officers who you threaten will be prepared to shoot you for carrying an imitation weapon. Your life is worth far more than a £4 toy from a shop."
-------
But your life isn't worth so much that they'll let you defend it without relying on the state to do so. In fact, carry a real firearm, just to defend yourself, and these "bobbies" will use violent force to arrest you and throw you in jail -- kinda like in New York City, Chicago or Los Angeles, among too many others.

"No police comment was available on the incident."

"The state-controlled daily Herald newspaper said Gilman argued with officers who stopped him, and was fired on when he tried to flee the roadblock. He was hit in the shoulder and died three hours later, the embassy spokesperson said." ...

"Richard Perle, a leading Pentagon adviser on Iraq, last night launched an extraordinary tirade against Europe which he accused of losing its moral direction and providing succour to Saddam Hussein."

" 'I think Europe has lost its moral compass. Many Europeans have become so obsessed by the prospect of violence they have failed to notice who we are dealing with,' he said in an interview with the Guardian."

"Mr Perle expressed serious reservations about the United Nations chief weapons inspector, Hans Blix, and the ability of his team to disarm Iraq."

"But he reserved his most scathing comments for Germany and Chancellor Gerhard Schröder's new anti-war stance."

" 'Germany has subsided into a moral numbing pacifism. For the German chancellor to say he will have nothing to do with action against Saddam Hussein, even if approved by the United Nations, is unilateralism,' Mr Perle said."

"France, which led resistance within the UN security council to the Bush administration's drive for an automatic mandate for war against Iraq, fared little better."

"Did the French show more signs of moral fibre? 'I have seen diplomatic manoeuvre, but not moral fibre,' Mr Perle said." ...

" 'Forestry personnel had to kill one tiger Monday night in self-defense because it attacked them,' an official told Reuters by telephone from the Sunderbans Tiger Reserve, home to around 245 Royal Bengal tigers, some of them man-eaters."

"The tiger was killed in Bali village, 70 miles south of Calcutta, capital of West Bengal state, which shares the sprawling Sunderbans mangrove delta with neighboring Bangladesh."

" 'The second tiger was tranquilized after it entered a villager's home near where the first tiger was killed. It (the second tiger) is safe,' said the official, who asked to remain unnamed. Nobody was in the house when the tiger entered." ...

"As a licensed gun dealer, Mel Bernstein can buy, sell and shoot machine guns -- weapons considered so dangerous their sale is carefully controlled and buyers are rigorously screened by the government."

" 'You have to be super good to get approved for an automatic weapon, you have to have almost a super clean record,' he told CBS News Correspondent Cynthia Bowers. 'Anything you did in your lifetime can be used against you when you send in your paperwork to Washington.' "

"But a joint investigation by CBS News and Denver affiliate KCNC found that isn't always the case. Just because you're not approved for an automatic weapon, doesn't mean you can't get one."

"Anyone who wanted to modify a gun into an automatic weapon could easily find all the parts needed for sale at a recent Colorado gun show. It was the same gun show where Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold bought the weapons used in the Colombine [sic] massacre."

"And that easy availability has upset a lot of people." ...

"A millionaire businessman shot dead a pet dog when it attacked a peacock on his country estate, a court heard." ...

"Magistrates in Swindon heard the 63-year-old shot David Baker's soft-coated terrier with a 0.22 rifle in February when one of his peacocks was found with its chest ripped open." ...

The man on trial for killing the dog that killed his bird said:
"I never saw it on a lead. It was not the first time it had killed one of my birds.

"In retrospect, I should have been firmer with David Baker, who, through his own irresponsibility, is responsible for this incident.

"If I'd had a rock in my hand I'd have thrown a rock but I had a gun. I maintain that what I did was a humanitarian thing to do.

"If by doing what I did put me outside the scope of the firearms certificate, I would probably have done it anyway."

"He is free on bond and was ordered to return to court Dec. 11. The felony charge carries up to a three-year prison sentence."

"Attorney William Hooks entered the plea during Tuesday's arraignment. The 24-year-old Fizer did not speak at the hearing, and he and Hooks declined to speak with reporters."

"Fizer was arrested during an Oct. 13 traffic stop because his driver's license was suspended. Police said they searched his vehicle and found a loaded .40-caliber pistol under the seat. He was charged with unlawful use of a weapon."

"At a previous hearing, an Illinois State Police trooper testified that he stopped Fizer because his front windshield was tinted, which is illegal in Illinois."

"Patients at the country's hospitals should no longer be able to choose a Danish instead of a foreign doctor. A number of hospitals have now issued rulings stating that patients who discriminate racially will not be treated - unless in an acute emergency."
-------
Are the patients "racists" or perhaps just concerned with the possibility that some foreign doctors either have only third-world training or are accepted into Danish medical schools under a lower standard due to "affirmative-action" programs?

Does a patient have a right to choose his or her own doctor, for whatever personal reason?

WASHINGTON - "The Supreme Court plunged into the gun debate today, agreeing to decide whether the government can withhold information on some gun purchases and crimes, including details of database checks like those used to track weapons in the sniper case."

"The Bush administration, backed by the National Rifle Association and a police group, claims that confidential records are needed to safeguard investigations and protect people's privacy."

"Critics say the administration's policy keeps the public in the dark about gun violence and how well crime-fighters are doing."

"At issue for the Supreme Court is the scope of a federal public information law, which allows reporters and other outsiders to get unclassified government records that officials would not otherwise release."

"The court will decide if the release of the data could interfere with law enforcement efforts, which would exempt it from the sunshine law." ...

"The city of Chicago, which is suing the gun industry, filed suit to obtain the information under the Freedom of Information Act. Chicago is trying to recover money for gun violence. It claims marketing practices led to lawbreaking." ...

" 'There is simply no reasonable expectation of privacy involved in the purchase of firearms. And the recovery of a firearm by the authorities in the course of a criminal investigation is even less private,' the Supreme Court was told by Lawrence Rosenthal, Chicago's attorney." ...
