NBC News reported recently that a “social media war” had erupted between medical professionals and the National Rifle Association in the aftermath of the Thousand Oaks mass shooting, just as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention “released new figures showing gun deaths on the rise across the country.”
According to NBC, medical professionals “have increasingly taken on gun violence as a public health issue.”

The California mass shooting that cost the lives of a dozen people has immediately brought demands for stricter gun-control laws, but California is a state with very strict gun laws already. How many of those laws were violated by the murderer? Even the ones he obeyed did not prevent the tragedy. He reportedly purchased the pistol legally.

R.J. Young never liked guns. The author grew up in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, a place steeped in gun culture and awash in Confederate flags. As a young black kid, his parents taught him that guns can get you killed; that not every police officer wants to harm you, but not everyone is willing to give you the benefit of the doubt; that you need to be aware of the gun in the room; that it doesn’t matter how good each person is on the other end of a gun — they still have the same power, the same trigger finger, and they can still squeeze it. |

Much of the bloodshed reported this weekend unfolded Sunday, when at least 13 people were shot — one fatally. Two people were killed and four others were wounded on Saturday. Washington gun shop owners expect an increase in sales after state voters approved an initiative that adds restrictions to the purchase of semi-automatic rifles. Voters last week passed Initiative 1639, which will raise the purchase age for semi-automatic rifles to 21. Starting next year, buyers will be required to pass an enhanced background check and prove they have taken a firearms-training course. They must wait 10 business days to take possession of the gun, the Seattle Times reported.
