"It is perfectly reasonable for Carvell, or any other responsible New Zealander, to possess a firearm for self-defence. The right to defend oneself and one's loved ones must not be attacked, Linton explains. "This is a ridiculous charge against a law-abiding New Zealand citizen who should be given a medal. Why are the Police putting criminals before their victims? This is another symptom of the PC culture instituted by the Labour government."

Mark Lee, 34, farmer, of River View Avenue, Gordon Town, St. Andrew, was freed after Mr. Justice Lloyd Hibbert upheld a no-case submission by defence lawyer Everton Bird. The judge directed the jury to return a formal verdict of not guilty.

Mr. Bird submitted that the arresting officer had testified that when he saw Lee suffering from injuries at the University Hospital, Lee said he acted in self-defence. Mr. Bird said the Crown did not produce evidence to disprove Lee's statement.

A gun-shop owner whose son shot a man carrying a machete is disgusted that he is to be charged.

On July 31, a man entered the Small Arms International Gun Shop in Penrose, Auckland, allegedly threatening to kill staff unless they gave him a gun.

A store director, Greg Carvell, 33, shot him in the stomach with a .45-calibre pistol.

On the night of February 5, 2005, Scotty Fowler was shot and killed, and April McCullough was the one who pulled the trigger. The defense is saying the shooting was a case of self defense. However the solicitor's office found enough probable cause on that night to arrest McCullough and charge her with murder.

...

Scotty pushed past April's mother, bruising the mother. He then broke into the house and chased April to the back of the house and April fired one shot at him. It went into his arm and ended up going into his chest and killing him."

KNOXVILLE (WATE) -- With a Knox County commissioner's gun wielding stand against an armed robbery attempt, plus an armed home invasion Monday, you may want a refresher on the gun laws for protecting yourself.

If you choose to carry a gun for protection, there are some places that are off-limits while you're armed. Those include buildings where alcohol is sold and served, all courtrooms, school campuses, public parks and playgrounds.

About $2.6 billion was spent on the 468 House and Senate races. (Scandalized? Don't be. Americans spend that much on chocolate every two months. But although Republicans had more money, its effectiveness was blunted because Democrats at last practiced what they incessantly preach to others - diversity. Diversity of thought, no less: Some of their winners even respect the Second Amendment.

Free markets, including political markets, equilibrate, producing supplies to meet demands. The Democratic Party, a slow learner but educable, has dropped the subject of gun control and welcomed candidates opposed to parts or even all of the abortion rights agenda.

Britt added that firearms have become too available to young people. He suggested families who keep weapons know where they are and keep them locked away.

“I've got nothing against the right to bear arms, but from what I've seen in the court system, there are way too many guns floating around,” Britt said. “The consequences are very severe for these crimes and I don't think people think about it, they don't think they'll get caught.”

Mr. Caldwell wrote that Republicans would be the ones to protect our Second Amendment rights.

No, no, my disillusioned gun owner. The only one who can protect your Second Amendment rights is you! If you don't have the courage to keep your own weapons, then you don't deserve them.

Mr Ruddock said if Australia had introduced a bill of rights at the time of federation in 1901 the country could have ended up with a set of sexist principles as well as parts of the abandoned White Australia Policy and even, as in the US, the right to bear arms.

Let me posit, however, that keeping the Democratic base in check and on board will likely be even more difficult than the same task with the Republican base.

Want a case study? Watch what happens to Senator-elect Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, who beat incumbent Sen. Rick Santorum, a Republican lightning rod. Casey is against abortion and supports the Second Amendment. That's the gun one, for those of you who've forgotten.

A good chunk of the sweeping Democratic victory, in fact, comes from the center that the Republicans, to their discredit, abandoned. So much for Ronald Reagan's big tent.

ANTI-GUN campaigners in Manchester are demanding that sportswear giant Puma withdraw a shoe which "glamorises guns".

The company has produced a limited edition £60 fashion-trainer called "Bonnie and Clyde" which has a picture of a sub-machine gun on the heel instead of the Puma motif, and the words "I steal for a living" on the sock liner. Bonnie and Clyde were violent American criminals in the 1930s.

Of course, the registry of guns has got to be controlled and strictly enforced. In my perfect world, there wouldn't be any guns, except those carried by police officers. I know that that will never happen, particularly with the power of the National Rifle Association and the Republican conservative right.

Ed. Note: The linked article contains profanity in rap lyrics.

Our SportsWorld is sticky with this pornography of violence. Military Recruitment centers are permanent fixtures at some parks. Bomber jets fly over NFL stadiums. The Washington Redskins do joint events with the NRA.

The NBA is simply no exception to this semi-automatic circle jerk.

Spinning Guns

The gun lobby's spin operation in the wake of its sizable defeats last Tuesday is literally unbelievable. How, for example, can George Will say during the Sunday morning roundtable discussion on the Stephanopoulos show that the NRA was a "winner" when they lost over 82 percent of the 46 called races where their endorsed candidates ran against candidates endorsed by the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence?

The NRA spent over 1.7 million dollars (80 percent of their independent expenditures) on losing campaigns this year. The NRA's success rate in the U.S. Senate was only 25 percent and in the U.S. House (with some races still undecided) only 42 percent.

The rapid-fire, metallic spit of a machine gun reverberated in the 35-degree chill of a November morning. A dozen machine gun enthusiasts stood around bay 6 at Albany Rifle & Pistol Club, waiting for their turn to shoot through a course of steel targets. "Shoot fast, don't make mistakes; that pretty much sums it up," instructor Jim Ebert said of the club's monthly submachine gun competition.

Sarah Palmer has a handgun and the guts to shoot it. The only problem is she doesn't quite know how. That's where the Caddo Sheriff's Regional Training Academy comes in. The training academy teaches free classes for groups, including women and children, in gun safety and the proper way to fire a gun. Over the weekend, Palmer, along with about 25 other area women, met at the shooting range for a day of cleaning, loading and firing their weapons. "It's great," Palmer said. "You really become familiar with your gun. Now I'll be able to use it with no hesitation."

"...What is the in-when you enumerate the rights which you are to enjoy? That those not enumerated are relinquished. There are only three things to be retained--religion, freedom of the press, and jury trial. Will not the ratification carry every thing, without excepting these three things? Will not all the world pronounce that we intended to give up all the rest?"

"I feel myself distressed, because the necessity of securing our personal rights seems not to have pervaded the minds of men; for many other valuable things are omitted..."

"...as proper amendments to the Constitution, and a declaration of rights containing those fundamental, unalienable privileges, which I conceive to be essential to liberty and happiness...."

The bandit should have paid closer attention to the used car salesman's "Friends of the NRA" ball cap before pulling his gun. Auto dealer Greg "Lumpy" Lambert, a Knox County commissioner, said a young man walked onto his sales lot Saturday and was determined to buy a 2005 Ford Focus. Presented with the sales paperwork, the man pulled a .25-caliber handgun from his pocket, apparently to rob him, the commissioner said. Lambert, a National Rifle Association member who has a ball cap from the group and has offered free rifles with car purchases in the past, was ready with his own .380-caliber pistol.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
The right of citizens to bear arms is just one more guarantee against arbitrary government, one more safeguard against tyranny, which though now appears remote in America, history has proven to be always possible. — Senator Hubert H. Humphrey
