Nicki F: Some interesting numbers from Finland

"All it takes is one high-profile criminal act with a firearm, and the gun grabbers begin their blood dance of disarmament. So it is with Finland, where gun banners are pressuring the Finns to 'rethink their laws in the wake of Wednesday's' school rampage by a teenage killer."

"With 1.6 million firearms in private hands, the Nordic nation is an anomaly in Europe, lagging behind only the US and Yemen in civilian gun ownership, studies show."
But these studies show something else as well. The rate of homicide with firearms is very low in Finland, despite high rates of civilian gun ownership. 'According to a government study in 2002, only 14 per cent of homicides in Finland are gun-related.' ..." ...

"For the record, I am opposed to Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as a national holiday in the month of January or, for that matter, any other month. It isn’t that I oppose a national holiday celebrating the legacy of America’s greatest civil rights leader. I just don’t believe that King was our greatest civil rights leader. I believe that distinction belongs to John Browning."

"Since John Moses Browning was born on January 23rd, 1855, it will be easy to make the transition from a Martin King to a John Browning national holiday. And it will be educational, too. Many gun owners are unaware that Browning sold 44 guns to Winchester including the Model 94 level action repeater. ..." ...

"When I was a kid growing up, one of my favorite TV shows was The Untouchables, starring Robert Stack as Eliot Ness, the leader of the real-life squad of Federal agents who took down the murderous Chicago gang boss Al Capone in one of the great law enforcement victories of the Depression years."

"Even then, I read magazines like GUNS and knew Stack wasn’t just an actor, but one of us, a certified pro-Second Amendment gun enthusiast. Indeed, he was more. Bob Stack was a former national champion clay bird shooter. It was good to see at least one actor on the screen who knew what to do with the guns the scriptwriters put in his hands." ...

"The Supreme Court's orders list just issued indicated no action one way or the other on District of Columbia v. Heller, the city's petition seeking to resurrect its strict handgun ban. The case, if it is ultimately granted review, would bring the contentious battle over the meaning of the Second Amendment before the high court, which has largely sidestepped the issue for more than six decades."

"So why would the Court not act on a case that its agenda indicated was to be discussed at its private conference Nov. 9? It's not uncommon for the Court to delay a vote and relist a case for a future conference one or more times, and in fact it seems to happening more lately, says Supreme Court expert Roy Englert Jr. ..." ...

"Figuring out what might be going on with this case at the Supreme Court is a bit like reading tea leaves, but Denniston offers several possible explanations:"

"[A]mong the possible reasons for delaying the case are these: one or more Justices simply asked for more time to consider the two cases; the Court may be rewriting the question or questions it will be willing to review ... the Court may have voted initially to deny review ... and one or more Justices are writing a dissent from the denial. ..." ...

Court Takes No Action in Guns Case

FULL TEXT BELOW:

The Supreme Court took no action Tuesday in the case involving the District of Columbia's ban on handguns.

The justices discussed the case at their private conference on Friday, but reached no resolution.

Four justices must vote to grant an appeal. The court does not always reach a decision the first time it discusses a case.

At issue is the capital's 31-year ban on handguns, among the strictest gun-control laws in the nation. In March, a federal appeals court struck down the ban as incompatible with the Second Amendment.

The justices next meet on Nov. 20 to consider accepting appeals. Their decision could be announced then or when the court convenes for oral arguments on Nov. 26.

The case is District of Columbia v. Heller, 07-290.

"The court didn't explain its decision but Scotusblog reported justices may want more time to consider the petitions or reworking the questions it is willing to review."

"The District wants the court to determine how the Second Amendment should be defined (District of Columbia vs. Heller) and a cross petition seeks a ruling on who can challenge laws before they are actively enforced (Parker vs. District of Columbia). The justices are expected to look at the cases again next week." ...

MO: Will the Supremes review the D.C. gun ban?

FULL TEXT BELOW:

We could learn today whether the U.S. Supreme Court is going to consider the Washington D.C. gun ban. For years, the District made it damn near impossible for any private citizen to own a firearm. But a federal appeals court has struck the ban down.

Now it comes to the Supreme Court, and if they take the case, however they rule, it could have an impact on gun rights across the country. For years, the court has interpreted the Second Amendment to mean that militias have the right to keep and bear arms, not individuals. In the D.C. case, the appeals court said it's the other way around -- the Second Amendment covers individuals.

FULL TEXT BELOW:

The U.S. Supreme Court is deciding whether to take up a case that could have a far-reaching impact on gun rights and laws. At issue is the long-debated, awkwardly structured sentence of the Second Amendment to the Constitution: 'A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

Does this guarantee an individual's right to bear arms or just a collective militia’s right?

That’s never been settled by any previous high court, and if the justices decide to take it up (they discussed the case today but haven’t issued a decision whether to accept it), it will be a closely watched and significant battle in the culture wars.

"The United States may be facing its first sweeping change in federal handgun laws in nearly 70 years if the Supreme Court does not hear and overturn a recent decision by a U.S. appeals court."

Submitter's Note: This was one of the best KABA-issue-related programs I've seen in awhile-The History Channel's Return of the Pirates. Merchant mariners and passengers disarmed, literally, by international law, yet many of the pirates are teams of corrupt police~one of them may serve as an informant for non-police pirates: working with the police to solve an incident, or to prevent the phenomenon itself, may not be in the best interest of the company..$16 of the $50 billion dollar annual losses to criminality in this industry are to piracy. The crews want to be armed, but the general corporate fear is a trend of escalation of hostilities. In one case, a large sonic device was used to ward off an AK toting Somali.

"I have been involved in Republican party politics for many years and I am also on the Republican Central Committee in Clinton County, Ohio. So I am going to offer some advice I hope my fellow Republicans will listen to. First I must say I am distressed to see the polls are indicating my fellow Republicans are making a huge mistake, one they have made often in recent elections. What they are doing? According to the polling data they are setting up the party for a major defeat. How? By alienating a major player in the coalition that gives the GOP victories--a vital ally who will sit home next November, if Rudy or Mitt are at the top of the ticket. Their sitting at home will surely deprive the GOP of victory. ..." ...

Paul has basic conservative views: limited government, less wasteful government spending, protecting our borders, support for our Second Amendment rights (bearing arms) and a pro-life philosophy.
