A leading national Second Amendment advocate may have cracked a code by suggesting that the gun prohibition lobby isn’t trying to erase the right to keep and bear arms, but rather they are attempting to nullify the amendment piecemeal via increasingly strict regulations, as noted in an Op-Ed he bylined recently in the Asheboro, N.C. Courier-Tribune.
Alan Gottlieb, founder and executive vice president of the Second Amendment Foundation continued that contention in a letter to the editor of the Seattle Times Tuesday morning. “Gun prohibitionists,” he wrote, “simply want to nullify the Second Amendment by regulation.” |

The revolution of 1776 sought to turn a colony of Great Britain into a new independent republic based on constitutionally protected freedom. It succeeded with the creation of the United States. The failed revolution of 1861, by a slave-owning South declaring its independence from the Union, sought to bifurcate the country, More than 600,000 dead later, slavery was abolished, a Confederacy was in in ruins, and the South was forced back into the United States largely on the conditions and terms of the victorious North.

Founding father and second president of the United States John Adams said, “You will never know how much it has cost my generation to preserve your freedom. I hope you will make a good use of it.” Perhaps this should be added to American History classes in the Empire State.

Mass killer and former Marine Ian David Long recently killed twelve people at the Borderline Bar in Thousand Oaks, California. As often occurs, a firearm was used by a person with history of obvious mental instability who was known to police authorities and mental health consultants. Ian Long was thought not to be an immediate threat to self or others and was apparently not seen in followed-up.

The Ohio House on Wednesday is expected to approve a controversial stand-your-ground bill that eliminates a “duty to retreat” when facing a threat before utilizing deadly force. Supporters say House Bill 228, which also includes a number of other firearm-related provisions, would put Ohio law in line with about half of other states by shifting the burden of proof in self-defense cases from the defendant to the prosecution.

An altercation last month at a Dearborn bar might have ended tragically if not for a tip from a citizen, said Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad.
On Oct. 27, four suspects had just been involved in a bar fight, went home and may have planned to return, guns in hand, when they were pulled over by police at Jerome and Walwit streets, Haddad said.
“What’s really troubling about this is that when these four people were arrested, they were in two cars and had a young infant in the back seat,” Haddad said during a Monday press conference. “Next to the young infant was a guy with an AK-15.”
But “some real observant citizens found them on the street and could tell they were up to no good,” Haddad said.

The Nov. 9 editorial “Enough is enough, again,” about the recent Thousand Oaks, Calif., shooting, mentioned a desire to see stronger gun laws. However, California has very restrictive gun laws. The editorial also proposed an assault weapons ban; but the shooter did not have an assault weapon. The editorial, unintentionally or otherwise, ignored the central role of mental illness. |

At the conclusion of the Franco-Prussian War in 1871, French military domination of Europe also came to an end. From there, a now-unified Germany took center stage and brought an entirely new balance of power to Europe during the closing decades of the 19th century. But, France was by no means a nation beyond its prime during those years. |

Duncan's Outdoor Shop in Bay City is extra busy this week as hunters sight in their guns and gear up for the opening day of the 2018 firearm deer season on Thursday, Nov. 15.
Duncan's offers indoor firing ranges of 50, 100 and 200 yards to practice shooting. Employees and volunteers are assisting hunters with properly sighting in their weapons.
A successful deer hunting season is predicted in 2018 by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Due to the mild weather last spring, there was an increase in the overall number of fawns and deer seen, creating a favorable hunting season this year, the agency said.

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
There are other things so clearly out of the power of Congress, that the bare recital of them is sufficient, I mean the "...rights of bearing arms for defence, or for killing game..." These things seem to have been inserted among their objections, merely to induce the ignorant to believe that Congress would have a power over such objects and to infer from their being refused a place in the Constitution, their intention to exercise that power to the oppression of the people. —ALEXANDER WHITE (1787) |
