MI: Michigan deer firearm season is nigh, interest high

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic or perhaps because of it Michigan is seeing booming interest in hunting.

As the state heads into deer firearm season beginning Sunday, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources says there are 474,066 deer hunters in Michigan, up 11% from 427,902 this time last year.

The increase in numbers could be due to the pandemic, said Dustin Isenhoff, a marketing and outreach specialist with the DNR. And the growing number of hunters tracks rising interest this year in everything from kayaks and fishing gear to bicycles and just about anything else done outside, socially distanced.

Led by Kayla Reifel and Emma Mackenzie, Eagle River captured its third straight Cook Inlet Conference riflery championship in a virtual competition this week.

Reifel was the top shooter with score of 293, which included a perfect score of 100 from the prone position. Mackenzie placed second with a 291 and teammate Abigail Foger was fifth with a 289, giving the Wolves three of the competitions top five shooters.

It was a close team race, with the top three squads separated by 40 points.

Eagle Rivers team of 12 led the way with 3,336 points. The Service Cougars, winners of the CIC regular-season championship, placed second with 3,320 16 points behind Eagle River and 24 points ahead of third-place West, which had 3,296.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is pushing for an expansion to the states stand your ground law that targets people who are accused of looting and rioting, NBC News reports. Wendy's threat refers to the September 30 video tweet that Biden had shared on his official account, sharing photos of extremists with guns. The shot of Rittenhouse was in the same video, which included the audio of Fox News' Chris Wallace asking the sitting POTUS to condemn White supremacists. It baffles me to see someone training with a full-size pistol worn in a thigh rig slung from a tactical belt supporting a slew of magazinesonly to stow said gear and strap on a subcompact pistol or subnose revolver. Then, of course, they put on a cover garment, which they havent practiced a single draw from all day, to head out into their real world.

President of the Montana Shooting Sports Association Gary Marbut was on Fridays Talk Back program answering questions from listeners about firearms issues.

Marbut, who has helped to author the majority of Montanas gun laws over the last 20 years, spoke about legislation hes working on for the 2021 session of the Montana Legislature.

It looks like our flagship bill will be one to eliminate those dangerous gun free zones where only criminals are armed in all of the various aspects of Montana and there are a number of different kinds of gun free zones that are established in law, said Marbut. We would like to see those reduced.

Something remarkable happened recently in the pages of The New York Times, a newspaper that has never been friendly to the Second Amendment. In a story headlined A Divided Nation Agrees on One Thing: Many People Want a Gun, the newspaper actually put forth a balanced, in-depth report on why so many people have bought guns for the first time in their lives this year.

The Times quoted Douglas Jefferson, vice president for the National African American Gun Association, explaining, The year 2020 has been just one long advertisement for why someone may want to have a firearm to defend themselves.

A recent Gallup Poll found that 60 percent of Americans own guns in order to feel safe.

When the research group asked a random sampling of 309 gun-owning American adults as to the reasons for owning one, the vast majority cited a desire to protect themselves.

After that, 36 percent said they owned them for hunting, while 13 percent use them for recreation. Only 5 percent cited the Second Amendment as motivation, despite its frequent use as a talking point on the issue.

As both elections for Georgias seats in the U.S. Senate head towards runoff elections on January 5, it is important to note where the candidates stand on your rights. Both elections are crucial for the future of the Second Amendment in this country.

In this first of two installments, well break down the race between Sen. David Perdue (R) and Jon Ossoff (D), who both purport to be in support of the Second Amendment, but, in reality, only one of them really is pro-freedom.

Ossoff, who previously lost a 2017 special election for the U.S. House of Representatives, has deceptively said that he will defend our Second Amendment. In reality, this couldnt be further from the truth.

Both Bellars attorney, Andrew Kirkpatrick, and Morrisons attorney, George Lyons, argued the Michigan Attorney General Offices case against their clients are flimsy, claiming the statements are protected by the Constitution.

At the core of this, there are First and Second Amendment protections, Lyons said. Theres a misguided impression the Constitution protects only people who think the way we all do. I remember seeing dummies with Obama written on them hanging from trees. That was protected speech. These men talked about the Governor, but they did nothing else but talk.
