Second story- You’re in your room at your family’s home. It is 2am, and you hear yelling from the front door. A large group of men have broken into your home.
Third story- You park your car on the street. You walk up to your front door when a young man steps up behind you and points a gun at you. He demands your wallet, your phone, and your keys.

Vice Mayor Matt Grocott was the lone dissenting vote on the moratorium, which will prevent a Turner’s Outdoorsman, a chain store with mostly Southern California locations, from opening up at 1123 Industrial Road later this month as it had planned. “It is not fair for this business to get as far as it has with an application … and then a firestorm happens,” Grocott said. Turner’s Outdoorsman has already signed a 10-year lease for the location on Industrial Road near REI, and has spent $125,000 on the new store. |

Among the many problems with the Great Gun Debate these days is that the pro-gun crowd wants to make it a culture-war battle and the anti-gun crowd wants to pretend that it isn't.
On public policy grounds, the pro-gun people have the better arguments. Firearm homicides have declined since the 1990s despite the loosening of gun laws.
Almost none of the remedies proposed in the wake of mass shootings would have actually prevented those crimes (though had so-called bump stocks been banned — as they should be — fewer would have died in the Las Vegas shooting last month).
Indeed, it's common in the aftermath of shootings to hear pundits and politicians call for the passage of laws that already exist. |

Nov. 30 marks the start of yet another of Illinois' many special deer seasons. This season, however, is for those dedicated hunters who prefer to harvest their deer using the firearms of our forefathers. This particular hunt is for those who pursue deer with only a muzzleloading weapon. This means the hunter has only one shot and it must be accurate. You can bet that after all the excitement of the regular firearm season, deer won't hang around waiting for the hunter to reload a muzzleloader.

CMMG introduced its new Guard line of pistol-caliber carbines chambered in .45 ACP early in 2017. Now, the company expanded its lineup with new CMMG MkGs Guard carbines chambered in the popular 9mm. The new CMMG MkGs Guard carbine in 9mm operates on the same radial-delayed blowback operation found in the company's pistol-caliber carbines chambered in .45 ACP. The novel system was developed by the company in order to provide dependable, consistent performance in a pistol-caliber rifle setup without having to resort to a standard blowback operating system used by other manufacturers.

Chicago ranks 12th on a new list of the 25 most violent cities in America, according to a new study. No city contributed more to the increase in the national homicide rate last year than Chicago, according to on 24/7 Wall St.’s report. There were 287 more murders in Chicago in 2016 than there were in 2015, a 60 percent increase. In total, the city’s homicide rate of 29 murders per 100,000 residents last year was nearly six times the national rate of 5 homicides per 100,000 Americans. |

Nov. 15 – a day many consider a holiday.
Even those who don’t personally observe the opening day of deer season can have something to be thankful for. Not only can they count on family, friends and co-workers skipping work to seek white-tailed deer in Michigan’s woods and fields, but they can also look forward to the conservation benefits hunting provides statewide. In fact, there is more to hunting than people may realize. |

Gov. Scott Walker has signed four bills relating to hunting into law.
Assembly Bill 528 – This bill restores a prohibition (from 2015 Act 100) revoked by 2017 Act 59, which eliminated deer carcass tags from being required under law and thereby re-legalized the harvest of antlerless deer by adults using a youth antlerless deer hunting license under group hunting circumstances. This bill re-establishes the 2015 Act 100 prohibition for adults from harvesting antlerless deer using a youth antlerless carcass tag under group hunting allowances.

When the Seattle Times editorial board declared Monday that “gun laws work,” it struck a nerve with gun owners who have predictably called the editorial dishonest, and reinforced their view that newspapers are staffed with elitists who use the First Amendment to erode the Second.
The newspaper acknowledges up front that gun laws “will never stop every homicide,” but quickly insists, “but they clearly work.”
Except, according to hundreds of critics, they clearly don’t work, as can be seen by the body counts in Chicago, Baltimore, Washington, D.C. and other locales. |

Newtown school shooter Adam Lanza heard the message loud and clear when gun-maker Remington Arms marketed an AR-15-style rifle as an overpowering weapon favored by elite military forces, a lawyer for relatives of some victims of the massacre told the Connecticut Supreme Court on Tuesday. Lanza, who killed 20 first-graders and six educators with a Bushmaster XM15-E2S on Dec. 14, 2012, was obsessed with violent video games and idolized the Army Rangers, attorney Joshua Koskoff said. |

A proposed first-of-its-kind law in the nation would ban gun ownership for anyone in Illinois convicted of animal abuse. “People that have abused animals, every study has said they abuse women, they abuse children, they’re serial killers. … So what we’re saying is if you’re convicted of animal abuse, no guns for you the rest of your life,” says Jerry Elsner, executive director of the Illinois State Crime Commission. |

The State’s Board of Education can’t decide what to do about recent gun legislation. There are four Democrats and four Republicans on the board. Michigan Public Radio’s Cheyna Roth reports that means the board can’t come to an agreement on a public position on bills that loosen restrictions on guns in schools.
The bills passed the state Senate last week. They would require schools to allow people with a special license to carry a concealed weapon on school grounds.
Democrats insist the board needs to make a public statement against the bills. But Republicans say they need to wait until the bills are further along in the legislative process.

A judge ruled a Georgia man’s use of deadly force was lawful and in self-defense when he fatally shot a woman at an Oak Grove hotel and a murder charge against the man was dismissed Monday in Christian Circuit Court. Octavious D. Ludwig, 23, Dalton, Georgia, was emotional as Judge John Atkins dismissed the murder charge against him for the April 20 death of 22-year-old Roshanda Hayden, Millington, Tennessee, at the Days Inn on Auburn Street in Oak Grove. |

There appears to be nothing remarkable about the home of Paul Edmunds in the Gloucestershire village of Hardwicke. The modest red-brick cottage he shared with his partner, a health worker, and a small terrier dog has peaceful views across the Forest of Dean. A Jaguar saloon can sometimes be seen on the drive with Edmunds’ initials – PRE – on the plates but it is a comfortable rather than flashy vehicle. This does not look like a gangster hideaway. |

Don’t point a gun at someone you don’t intend to shoot. That may seem like a pretty obvious rule, but it’s not quite as simple as it sounds. The instructors at North Whidbey Sportsmen’s Club will tell you that you need to consider not just the person in front on you, but who might be on the other side of any walls or structures and what lies beyond that and maybe even beyond that. |

Gun-related issues for the 2018 Session could be firing blanks in the Republican-dominated Florida Legislature. The 60-day regular Session still won’t start for a little under two months. But Senate Judiciary Chairman Greg Steube said Tuesday that “at this time” he doesn’t plan to file two gun bills that have been among the more-controversial issues in recent sessions. One of those proposals would allow people with concealed-weapons licenses to carry guns on university and college campuses. The other proposal would allow license-holders to openly carry handguns. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
Some of the worst abuses of government force in recent years were precipitated by technical and victimless gun-law violations. For example, the BATF claimed that the Branch Davidians possessed machine guns without paying the required federal tax and filling in the proper registration forms. So a tax case worth less than $10,000 led to a 76-man helicopter, machine gun, and grenade assault on a home in which 2/3 of the occupants were women and children. — Dave Kopel and Dr. Michael S.
