Don’t blame gun maker for acts of criminals

"Regarding the column by Robert Scheer, 'Bullet-proof protection for gun industry' (Oct. 30):"

"A gun manufacturer has no control over how a gun is used after it is sold. All guns are equipped with a safety device, a gun lock and an owner’s manual full of warnings and cautions. But guns sometimes fall into the wrong hands, and the manufacturer has no control over this."

"Placing responsibility on a manufacturer of a gun that was used in a criminal action makes about as much sense as blaming Boeing for the destruction of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon because it built the aircraft used in these attacks." ...

San Francisco's pointless handgun ban

"It’s not easy to do, but gun control advocates in San Francisco have come up with an anti-firearms measure that embarrasses even some gun control advocates. The red-faced ones may realize this one is not likely to work even if it is upheld in court, which it almost certainly will not be. But the pointlessness of the initiative didn’t stop San Franciscans from approving it by a hefty majority."

"Proposition H outlaws the sale, manufacture, transfer and ownership of handguns and ammunition in the city. ..."

"So what’s wrong with this plan? Just about everything. Start with the fact that it appears to conflict with the state constitution, which gives the state sole jurisdiction over firearms regulation ..." ...

"Citizens of San Francisco recently voted to ban the possession, manufacture, distribution, sale and transfer of handguns and ammunition within their city. They have voluntarily stripped themselves of their Second Amendment rights and they have forcefully removed the rights of other citizens who disagree with their position. And while people across the country may have found this shocking, there are a number of ex-Californians who are not surprised in the least as banning firearms represents an integral element of the "progressive" movement as it strides toward a Communist regime." ...

"The spotlight on Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito's position on abortion has shone so brightly that the issue has overshadowed another controversial question: Where does he stand on gun ownership?"

"It is just one example of how gun rights have been temporarily pushed aside. ... When the issue reassumes center stage, some will be surprised to see that it wears a somewhat different face — a more feminine face."

"One thing is certain: The issue of gun rights will keep emerging not only because it has highly organized advocates and detractors, but also because the average person has become more concerned about personal safety in a post-Sept. 11 world. Recent events have heightened people's concern." ...

"Smith & Wesson began production yesterday on a new pistol it hopes will crack the military and police markets."

"The M&P pistol should be shipping by the end of the week, said spokesman Paul Pluff."

"The new part-plastic gun has been designed specifically to appeal to law enforcement customers. It will simultaneously ship to retail and police customers, with a suggested list price of $695, Pluff said."

"Officials have said they see the new pistol as a chance to win back some of the law enforcement market Smith & Wesson has lost over the years. The company's revolvers were once the weapon of choice for police use, but have been eclipsed in recent years by pistols, including those from competitor Glock." ...

"As much as I disagree with Daniel Ruth's bleeding- heart liberal politics, I do enjoy reading his columns as I much appreciate his wit and sarcasm. His column on Oct. 21 though, must be countered."

"I have never understood what it is about law-abiding citizens that scares the antigun crowd so much. What makes it so difficult for them to understand that a criminal, by definition, doesn't follow the law? What, for instance, is so difficult to understand about the fact that a law-abiding citizen isn't going to walk into his place of employment and begin shooting?"

"... Why is it so difficult for these anti-gun folks to understand that a gun doesn't turn a law-abiding citizen into a criminal any more than a vodka and tonic turns a social drinker into a raging alcoholic?" ...

"Hidalgo County sheriff’s officials believe Monday’s early morning shooting outside a ranch home is another case of mistaken identity — the third of its kind in the past week."

"Shattered glass still covered parts of the roadway Monday afternoon along 6 Mile Line and Stewart Road after a caretaker watching over Los Ojitos Ranch was awakened by the sound of gunfire, said Sheriff Lupe Treviño. Around 5:30 a.m., a group of men riding in a late-model GMC Denali stopped in front of the tan wooden home and opened fire. In self-defense, the sole occupant inside the home rushed out armed with a shotgun and a 9 mm handgun and returned fire. It is unclear whether anyone was wounded in the shooting, the sheriff said." ...

"Historically, Jamaica has always been a violence-prone society. What is different today than, say, in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s is the choice of a far more deadly weapon - the gun - to commit violence than obtained in those days, and the increased use of it as inner-city gangs grew, mostly from uneducated young people who migrated from rural communities to urban areas particularly in Kingston and St Andrew." ...
