"The Bellevue, Washington based Second Amendment Foundation has filed a federal lawsuit challenging the 'sporting purpose' restriction on behalf of London, England, resident Maxwell Hodgkins. Hodgkins is a United States citizen living abroad who returns to the United States on occasion. While here, the Second Amendment Foundation states Hodgkins can not purchase a firearm."
"More importantly, Hodgkins can 'receive' guns for 'lawful sporting purposes' but he is prohibited from doing so for lawful self defense while visiting the United States. This despite any state issued licenses or permits he may have acquired." ... |

"Many people view the Second Amendment to the Constitution as only for gun-nuts. Why should anyone care about it if they do not have guns? The answer is really quite simple: it is the perfect example of the government's willingness to infringe on rights. There is no better barometer for government involvement and ignoring citizens' rights than on gun issues. Why is that? Because the Constitution is direct in prohibiting the government from infringing on the right of the people to keep and bear arms. You see, there are other areas of government where there is some gray area ... However, none of these areas has a constitutional amendment that expressly prohibits government infringement." ... |

"For most Americans, guns are not a political issue. People buy and own guns to protect their families, not to commit crimes. The truth is that even millions of Americans who support and vote for gun control own guns themselves, because deep down they share the basic human need to feel secure in their homes."
"The gun control movement has lost momentum in recent years. The Democratic Party has been conspicuously silent on the issue in recent elections because they know it’s a political loser. In the midst of declining public support for new gun laws, more and more states have adopted concealed-carry programs. The Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and last year’s hurricanes only made matters worse for gun control proponents, as millions of Americans were starkly reminded that we cannot rely on government to protect us from criminals. ..." ... |

"Paul Helmke, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, issued the following statement about the Cook County Board strengthening the county's ordinance banning assault weapons in Cook County:"
"'On Election Day, the people of Cook County sent a clear message about military-style semiautomatic assault weapons: They are not wanted or needed on American streets. The County Board listened to the voters, and moved to strengthen the ban on these weapons within the County limits. The Illinois State Legislature should listen, too, and pass a statewide assault weapons ban as requested by 86 percent of the Cook County voters on Nov. 7. Such action would set an example, too, for the new U.S. Congress." ... -------
KABA Note: Once again Mr. Helmke is lying. The referendum specified 'military-style assault weapons' not 'military-style semiautomatic assault weapons' as he claims. |

... "I have a concealed weapons permit and I’ve carried a gun most of my adult life. I don’t usually let people know as I don’t believe that it’s necessary. I practice gun safety and follow all rules about how and where to carry and store it. I surely don't want to hurt anyone, and I don't go out looking for a reason to use it, but I realize that if I've made the decision to draw, it will end in one of two ways: The sight of it will defuse the situation, or I will have to fire. One of the most important things you need to know when carrying a handgun is that you will recognize a situation, make a split second decision, and be able to fire without hesitation." ... |

"Last month, President George W. Bush signed the 2007 Defense Authorization Act, which included an NRA-supported provision saving hundreds of elk and mule deer on Santa Rosa Island from the court-ordered extermination that was to begin in 2008 and be completed by 2011."
"However, yesterday, Sens. Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein attached an amendment to the Military Construction Appropriations bill that will overturn current law and exterminate hundreds of healthy elk and mule deer on Santa Rosa Island, off the coast of California. This issue is not about public access or whether these animals should be hunted and by whom. Current law protects the Santa Rosa elk and deer from extermination and this amendment will require that the animals be exterminated by 2011." ... |

State Sen. Tim Burchett says he foiled a burglary of his warehouse on Wednesday and held the suspected teenagers at gunpoint until authorities arrived.
The Knoxville Republican said the warehouse where he keeps old motorcycles and parts had previously been burglarized and he was trying to catch the perpetrators by staking out the woods nearby, The Knoxville News Sentinel reported on its Web site.
The teenagers had broken off the lock and were about to go inside when he confronted them with his pistol.
