"Three days ago, two Covington store owners had their world shattered when one of them killed a would-be robber in a shootout. Wednesday, as the two went to buy another weapon to protect themselves, they were among five people literally blown out of a Newport military surplus store by a freak explosion."

"He was taking the shells out of the chamber when it apparently jammed and in the process, it fired. ... The mystery...is what that round hit to set of the explosion and fire..."

When the guns are for the police, they are merely called "rifles," but if these same guns had been confiscated by police, they'd be called "assault weapons."

17 of them, at $500 apiece -- and yes, the AR-15 is classified as "an assault weapon" in California's list of banned guns:

"The National Police Agency (NPA) has instructed prefectural police nationwide in charge of training and education to ensure their officers do not overuse their service revolvers."

"NPA last week...relaxed rules governing the use of guns in self-defense."

"Police confiscated 834 [BANNED] pistols in Japan from January to October."

KABA NOTE: Relax self-defense laws for cops, but leave citizens vulnerable to attacks with banned guns. Sounds like the UK.

"California Atty. Gen. Bill Lockyer, who also sponsored the hearing, estimates there are as many as 25,000 members of Asian gangs."

"...LAPD has one expert on Asian gangs and a plan to move county probation officers to schools will soon mean the redeployment of the only two probation officers assigned to Asian gangs."

"My concern about this order, not having reviewed every detail, is that it kind of undercuts the efforts we've been making as a nation to distinguish ourselves from regimes like the Taliban. It sort of suggests that when the going gets tough, we don't really believe in our ideals either." --Professor Jonathan Entin, who teaches Constitutional Law at Case Western Reserve University

"A national ID card threatens liberty, but it will not enhance safety. Subjecting every citizen to surveillance actually diverts resources away from tracking and apprehending terrorists toward needless snooping on innocent Americans!

"This is what has happened with "suspicious activity reports" required by the Bank Secrecy Act. Thanks to BSA mandates, federal officials are forced to waste time snooping through the private financial transactions of innocent Americans."

Some students are in their 70s. Others are the minimum age of 11, and some of them so slight that Mike Natter of Edgerton puts his hand on their backs to brace them for the recoil of a rifle.

Instead of putting these kids and adults in the field uneducated, Natter makes sure the hunters are responsible and understand how firearms work.

"Corrupt politicians and police are helping to fuel the crime spree. But the experience in China is similar to that in Britain, Australia and other places where tighter controls on guns have been followed by increases in armed crimes.

"That, of course, is precisely what one would expect. When victims are less able to defend themselves, criminals are better able to go about their nasty business." --The Florida Times-Union

The ban, which became effective Oct. 30, came under intense scrutiny both by local Second Amendment activists and members of the Henrico Board of Supervisors. Both worried that the ban conflicted with the state and federal constitutions.

The Council of State wants more details about an Interior Ministry plan to exempt off-duty officials from a gun-carrying ban.

The ministry originally proposed that all gun licences be revoked, meaning no one would be entitled to carry them _ including off-duty police and soldiers, who can now do so as long as they hold a licence. The ministry then changed its mind and said an exemption should remain for low-ranking soldiers and police.

OK, all you scattergunners out there. Time for your annual Sunday morning quiz. Let's start with a show of hands: How many of you haven't yet missed a shot on a pheasant, grouse, duck or quail this season?

Now that we've stopped laughing, we'll get straight to the lie detector test: Was it the wind? Dust get in your eye? Or, as Dana Carvey's Church Lady character on "Saturday Night Live" would have put it, "Could it be...Satan?"
