"In a verdict that could cost him his life, a stone-faced John Allen Muhammad was convicted Monday of using a high-powered rifle, a beat-up car and a teenage sidekick to murder people at random and terrorize the Washington area during last year's sniper attacks."
"The jury immediately began hearing evidence on whether the 42-year-old Army veteran should get the death penalty or life in prison. The penalty phase is expected to last several days."
" 'We reserve the death penalty for the worst of the worst,' prosecutor Richard Conway told the jurors. 'Folks, he still sits right in front of you without a shred of remorse.' " |

"The FBI has launched a new background-check system that notifies counterterrorism agents when suspects on its terrorist watch list attempt to purchase guns — but regulations prohibit them from getting details if the transaction actually occurs, according to federal officials familiar with the system."
"If authorities block the purchase, however, the FBI is permitted to launch an investigation of the person who attempted to buy the weapon."
"The result, according to the officials, is an awkward situation in which terrorism suspects who do not complete gun purchases may be located, while those toting lawfully purchased weapons may not be." |

"The FBI has launched a new background check system that notifies counter-terrorism agents when suspects on its terror watchlist attempt to purchase guns, but regulations prohibit them from obtaining details if the transaction occurs."
"The rules are the result of Attorney General Ashcroft's interpretation of the Brady gun control law, according to Justice Department officials, who said they are simply abiding by the federal firearms background check system the statute established. The law bars authorities from sharing information with investigators about legal gun buyers and does not forbid terrorism suspects from purchasing firearms, officials said."

"Ten years ago, the Senate banned the manufacture of 19 semiautomatic assault weapons while protecting 670 hunting and other recreational rifles. The measure became law the following year."

"Ultimately, gun control is still a social issue. We certainly do not want known criminals running around with legally purchased weapons. A certain degree of control is necessary to make sure that we are not selling convicted felons guns; however, we should re-introduce the notion that people are responsible for their own actions, whether behind the wheel of a car (a much more deadly weapon in the hands of some) or a handgun. We do not exist in a nanny-state where the government must watch over the citizens with a careful eye. Obviously, people who abuse the right of owning guns should be punished, but there should be little to no interference to law-abiding citizen's purchase or weapons." |

Violent stabbings are becoming almost a daily occurrence in our city. In the past two weeks, there has been about five stabbings in our city, two of them happened this weekend. The most recent was Saturday night on 46 street South East. Two men were fighting when a man pulled out a knife and stabbed a 23 year old man in the stomach. He's listed in stable condition in hospital. Bradley Sleeman, 21, has been charged with aggravated assault, resist and obstructing a police officer and assault with a weapon.
Although police say this was an isolated incident, 35 Calgary women are arming themselves with self defence classes. They gathered at the Wing Chung Kung Fu Academy for a free class this weekend. The En-Garde program has been running for over a year and has taught more than 1500 Calgary women how to mentally and physically protect themselves on the streets.
Gillian Holowisky was attacked by a drunk person with a knife. Fortunately she wasn't hurt, but the memories are still strong. Through this program she's learning to become the victor not the victim. Her mother Dianne brought her to the course. "I think we're naive we think it's going to happen to someone else not to us, " says Holowisky.
For more information or to register for a free self defence course call the Wing Chun Kung Fu Academy at 243-6608.

"The Center for Law and Justice has done a report about Ohio and the Fourteenth Amendment. The report points out how Ohio's legislature ratified the amendment during Reconstruction, then unratified it after Democrats took over the state. Ohio's repudiation of the Fourteenth Amendment is criticized as a result of white-supremacist sentiment, and so it was. It does not follow, however, that only white-supremacists would hesitate to ratify the Fourteenth Amendment in the twenty-first century. The federal courts have invoked the Fourteenth Amendment in order to achieve many goals which have nothing to do with opposing white supremacy. Ratifying that amendment today, although a purely symbolic gesture, might be seen as supportive of what the federal courts have done in the name of the amendment." |
