"'The president of one of the nation’s leading anti-gun organizations recently admitted that the gun control lobby’s agenda is politically radioactive,' gun law expert John M. Snyder noted here today."
"In an article appearing in the November 12 issue of the Los Angeles Times, Peter Wallsten and Janet Hook wrote that Paul Helmke, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, 'acknowledged that his challenge is to persuade potentially squeamish Democrats that his cause is not 'radioactive.'"
"Snyder said that 'Helmke ... is trying to promote a ban on the importation, manufacture and distribution of certain semiautomatic firearms, which he and other gun grabbers refer to incorrectly as 'assault weapons.'" ... |

"Four decades ago, a gunman accosted my mother, who was on her way home after attending the 6 a.m. Mass at St. Lucy's in Spanish Harlem. When he demanded all her money, she looked him in the eye and said, 'What would your mother think of you doing this?' The gunman turned around and fled, saying nothing."
"These days, she likely would have been shot dead. Even as the latest school shootings fade from the public's consciousness, the battle against guns wages forth on all cylinders. But while guns have always been a part of the American landscape, it's the criminal element that has absolutely no respect for innocent life that is a relatively recent phenomenon." ... |

"In October Bennie Hall, Jr. left his car warming up in Cincinnati ... when a 14-year-old kid attempted to steal his car. Hall, a concealed handgun licensee, shot and killed the 14-year-old as his car was coming at him. At the time this website chose not to write about the story until the facts came out or the grand jury indicted Hall."
"When this story broke in October Hamilton County prosecutor Joe Deters made this very concerning statement: 'I don't want to live in a community where we're opening fire on shoplifters...'"
"Today, clearly changing course, he announced in a press release (doc) that his office has not only determined that Hall was acting in self-defense, but that he will not face criminal charges either. ..." ... |

"Senator George Allen (R-Virginia) has introduced SB 4057, the National Park Second Amendment Restoration and Personal Protection Act of 2006. If adopted as law, this legislation would allow legal carry of firearms into National Parks so long as the state does not prohibit carry in all parks."
"The arbitrary prohibition of your right to self-defense in a National Park needs to end. Your life is not worth less while visiting one of our country’s beautiful parks than it is anywhere else you may be. Personally, I believe that lonely wilderness trails may be one of the places that I would most want to have my self-defense firearm. Armed citizens regularly argue that we may not be able to wait for 911 to save us. ..." ... |

"State legislators from the Cook County suburbs as well as the collar counties would be well-served to look at the results of the Nov. 7 election as they consider their votes on gun issues in the 2007 General Assembly."
"In Cook County, a referendum proposal calling for a statewide ban on assault weapons was approved with more than 85 percent of the vote. The results were not all that surprising considering that more than 70 percent of voters statewide have indicated their support for an assault weapons ban in the past. What is surprising is that several legislators from suburban Cook County voted against an assault weapons ban in 2005. ..." ... |

"After seeing the chaos of Hurricane Katrina, a city councilor in this tiny Idaho town founded by pacifist Quakers came up with a novel idea."
"Ordinance 208, passed by the City Council on Tuesday, asks Greenleaf's 862 residents who do not object on religious or other grounds to keep a gun at home in case they are overrun by refugees from the Gulf Coast."
"'This is not an 'it'll never happen here kind of thing,' said Steven Jett, the ordinance's sponsor. 'We could get refugees.'"
"In this town ... - where an estimated 80 percent of the adults already own guns - the proposal hardly caused a stir: It went through weeks of public hearings and drew only mild criticism from the pastor of the town's Quaker meeting house." ... |

A decision has been made about a Raleigh police officer who is fighting to get her job back.
The Civil Service Commission decided Thursday not to give Michelle Peele her job back. She was fired after she admitted to killing a man she says was trying to steal her personal car.
She was off-duty when the shooting happened and says it was in self defense, but a police department policy prohibits firing into moving vehicles.
The commission says the city did not violate any policy by terminating Peele. |

"For the first time, a scientific reconstruction of how an unarmed suspect must have moved during a confrontation with police has been successfully introduced into the British criminal justice system, exonerating 2 officers who were facing murder charges after shooting the man dead."
"The officers, who'd been accused of lying to cover up their 'execution,' were cleared after Dr. Bill Lewinski, executive director of the Force Science Research Center at Minnesota State University-Mankato, convinced authorities that the only way the controversial shooting could have occurred was the way the officers said it did--when the suspect unexpectedly turned toward them, pointing what they reasonably believed was a sawed-off shotgun." ... |

Hunting and hunting heritage is an important part of Michigan's local customs. In an era when hunting seasons depend on voting and democracy, hunters need organizations to be their voice. One organization helps provide that voice while it continues to promote hunting and preserve hunting's heritage. The organization is the National Rifle Association (NRA)."

"Taking the Pale Rider example one step further we need to be reminded that it isn’t until Clint Eastwood’s character arrives and defends the prospectors with a gun that they are freed from torment.
