The 2004 Hunt: Presidential candidates on guns

"Democratic presidential candidates have recently taken up a new calling: offering advice to hunters. Governor Howard Dean supports extending the assault-weapons ban next year 'because I never met a hunter who needed an AK-47 to shoot a deer.' Senator John Kerry offered, 'When I go out there and hunt, I'm going out there with a 12-gauge shotgun, not an assault weapon.' "

"Clearly what worries these senators is that people and not deer will be 'hunted' with these guns. As Senator Carl Levin noted early this year, allowing the ban to expire will 'inevitably lead to a rise in gun crimes.' ..."

"The most-charitable interpretation is that the ban's proponents know nothing about guns." ...

"In the crime blotter from Dec. 26, 2000, Louis 'Sandy' Javelle's name appeared alongside those of six other victims who had been shot to death by a disgruntled co-worker at Edgewater Technologies, Inc., in Wakefield, Mass."

"Javelle distinguished himself that day by trying to delay and disarm the gunman, Michael McDermott, before being killed. But Javelle might have saved his own life and at least four others if the concealed handgun permit he held in New Hampshire had allowed him to carry a weapon on his job in neighboring Massachusetts."

"Ironically, the gun laws in Massachusetts prevented him from carrying a concealed handgun. But these same laws did not prevent Michael McDermott from obtaining illegal firearms."

"A bill to ban plastic guns which terrorists could slip past airport metal detectors has been blocked in the Senate by an anonymous GOP senator, Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass. said Tuesday."

" 'That's unacceptable, and the Senate leadership has a responsibility to act,' Kennedy said. 'The need for action before Congress adjourns is obvious. An undetectable Republican senator cannot be permitted to embarrass the entire Senate by blocking action' on the bill." ...

"Lawmakers want to reauthorize the Terrorist Firearm Detection Act of 1988, which bans the creation or possession of plastic firearms. Military and intelligence agencies are exempt."

NRA is on record in support of the ban.

"The FBI has launched a new background-check system that notifies counterterrorism agents when suspects on its terrorist watch list attempt to buy guns, but regulations prohibit those officials from obtaining details if the transaction occurs, according to federal officials familiar with the system."

"IF THE purchase is blocked, however, the FBI is permitted to investigate the person who attempted to buy the weapon."

"The result, according to the officials, is an awkward situation in which terrorism suspects who do not complete gun purchases may be located but those toting lawfully purchased weapons may not be sought."

"The rules are the result of Attorney General John D. Ashcroft’s interpretation of the Brady gun-control law..."

Guns in Book Bags

"On two sides of Tampa Bay, guns have shown up in book bags. A 13-year-old boy carried a loaded Titan .25-caliber handgun to Tampa's Sligh Middle School on Thursday, only to tell police he needed it 'for protection.' A 14-year-old boy brought a .45-caliber semiautomatic gun to St. Petersburg's Lakewood High School a week earlier, and police say he and two friends passed it around in the bathroom."

"That no one was hurt is a blessing, though not necessarily a comfort. The prevalence of guns in schools is the frightening extension of so many guns at home, and the United States now loses children to firearm deaths at a rate that is 16 times greater than 25 other industrialized nations. Each year, more than 20,000 young people under the age of 20 are killed or injured by firearms, including a 12-year-old Largo Middle School student who skipped school two months ago and ended up dead at the hands of a friend who accidentally fired his father's gun." ...

"In some ways, the best weapon against school weaponry is education itself. Students have to be taught the danger of guns and why they can't tolerate that anyone would possess one." ...

-------
Once again this paranoid hack is using doctored numbers to push an anti-freedom agenda. Get this straight: a person 18-20 years of age is not a child. A large majority of "children" who die in gunfire are dying in gang violence. Injury can be prevented with some parental responsibility and solid firearms training. But gun grabbers apparently do not want to hear about that.

Guns deaths cannot be compared to car fatalities (Letter)

"First, your figure of 30,000 gun deaths (40,000 minus the 10,000) is an inappropriate analogy between cars and guns. Most of the 40,000 car deaths were 'accidental,' whereas the 30,000 gun deaths (seems a bit high, even for CDC) were not all accidental. Many in that number provided by CDC were intentional shootings by gangbangers, thieves, robbers, and police (even self defense shootings are included in the CDC figure … you’re not opposed to self-defense, are you?). Another point worth considering is that licensing and insurance haven’t reduced the number of deaths by autos. Finally, if you are going to use CDC as an authority on gun control issues, you might want to read their latest report that analyzed 51 studies, over three years, concerning the effectiveness of gun control laws. They found no, repeat, no reduction in violent crime or gun accidents where gun control laws were put in place."

"It didn’t make any difference what gun control law was used, no decrease was seen. In fact, several violent crimes showed increases after the gun control laws were put into effect."

Shootings are no accident (Letter)

"For me, the problem with this argument is that the vast majority of gun deaths in this country are not accidents caused by the gun owners’ ignorance about weapons handling. They are violent crimes. The problem of gun violence in the United States is not being caused by law-abiding gun owners. The violence is caused by criminals, who, frankly, are no more concerned about the legality of gun possession than they are about the legality of hurting innocent people. ...Maybe when it’s clear that licensing the Second Amendment won’t accomplish the idealistic goal of making us all safe, they’ll start licensing the First Amendment, too. Incrementalism — the American liberal’s path to oppression."

"I never have liked the recoil in a pistol or a shotgun, but have shot all the magnum calibers and big guns. Today I prefer to take deer with a .243, because of its low recoil, and my old Mannlicher .30-06, because it has a set trigger, which means I don't have an opportunity to flinch. Apparently, other hunters feel like I do and don't enjoy hunting with rifles that kick."

"This year, Remington Arms Company has learned this truth."

"Remington has learned that heavy recoil causes hunters to flinch and not shoot as accurately as they can."

"DNA profiles from hundreds of thousands of juvenile offenders and adults arrested but not convicted of crimes could be added to the FBI's national DNA crime-fighting program under a proposed law moving through Congress."

"The law, if enacted, would be the greatest single expansion of the federal government's power to collect and use DNA since the FBI's national database was created in 1992. The FBI says its national DNA database holds genetic profiles from about 1.4 million adults convicted of state and federal crimes."

A YEAR 10 student frightened his classmates and a female teacher when he pulled out a "pistol" during a classroom lesson.

The weapon turned out to be a toy gun but police said it had "scared the hell out of everyone" at Matraville Sports High School in Sydney's eastern suburbs.

A police spokeswoman said yesterday the 15-year-old boy produced the pistol during a class lesson at 10.15am last Wednesday.

"Police were contacted but the child had left the school before they arrived," she said.

"He was spoken to at home at 9.15pm by Maroubra police."

Police issued the boy with a caution and he was suspended from school for 20 days.

"A Chicago police officer who shot and killed a man to thwart an attempted robbery acted in self-defense, police said Monday after a roundtable discussion of the shooting."

"Two men accosted the off-duty officer outside his apartment building Saturday about 8 p.m., police said. The officer drew his gun and fired shots at both men, fatally wounding William Conley. Conley was carrying a black pellet pistol that looked like a larger caliber handgun, said police spokesman Patrick Camden."

"Americans want to believe that each vote counts. However, election fraud makes some votes count more than others." ...

"I'd like to see another check-and-balance feature. Each voter would get two paper ballots - one to place in the official lockbox for official recounts and the other into a second box that would allow anyone to conduct a recount - political science and statistics students, researchers, journalists, polling companies, curious citizens. Using volunteers to scan the second ballots and post them online would give everyone easy access."

"This added layer of scrutiny would make fraud tougher to pull off. Thieves, like roaches, prefer to operate in the dark. It would make unofficial recounts possible in any race, even those that have fraud but are not close enough to draw attention, and egregious cases could lead to official recounts."
