Are you armed as you shop in the evening?

These gun owners survived a lethal threat. What would you do in these situations? Text and podcast available at the link. (23 minutes)

Pointed Soft-Point Ammo: PSP Bullets Explained

The pointed soft-point bullet is a popular bullet type used in dozens of lines of hunting ammo. Manufacturers range from cheap factories you might not be familiar with, to premium lines like the Remington CoreLokt. The pointed tip gives shooters a flatter trajectory at long ranges compared to the basic soft tip, and experienced long range hunters can appreciate any advantage they can get.

The pointed soft-point fills that niche between your basic soft point hunting ammo and something fancier like a polymer tip. You will typically get a higher ballistic coefficient with the pointed tip, as it is a bit more aerodynamic than a round tip.

A sedan that was started remotely slipped into a pond near a gun range on Saturday and had to be retrieved with the help of the Oakland County Sheriff's dive team, authorities said.

It was 7 feet below the surface of the water in a retention pond before divers spotted the car.

The owner of the black 2004 Saturn Ion said he was loading firearms into the trunk of his car parked near Huron Valley Guns in Lyon Township when it began rolling forward, said the Oakland County Sheriff's Office. The sedan traveled about 15 feet before entering the pond.

The owner of the vehicle, a Waterford Township resident, said he jumped into the water to grab his firearms before the vehicle became submerged, according to the sheriff's department.

You’d think Moms Demand founder Shannon Watts would know better by now than to bring a knife to an intellectual gunfight with firearms and gun policy expert Stephen Gutowski, but apparently she still hasn’t learned her lesson.

The investigation into the shooting at Saugus High School in the Los Angeles suburb of Santa Clarita has “become more complicated,” according to KNBC, the local NBC affiliate, as authorities continue searching for a motive.

According to the Los Angeles Times, school will resume at Saugus on Dec. 2. Between now and then, authorities will be trying to figure out how 16-year-old Nathaniel Berhow obtained the .45-caliber pistol he used in the Nov. 14 shooting that claimed the lives of 15-year-old Gracie Anne Muehlberger and 14-year-old Dominic Blackwell. Three other students were wounded.

An armed man allegedly tried to confront and rob a 25-year-old man at a Nashville ATM just before 10 p.m. The would-be robber approached the man with a gun drawn as the man was making a deposit. The man at the ATM was also armed and opened fire on the suspect in self-defense, hitting him multiple times. The suspect ran a short distance before collapsing and dropping a pistol. The suspect was later apprehended by police and is charged with attempted aggravated robbery, while no charges were filed against the armed citizen. (The Tennessean, Nashville, Tenn., 7/31/19)

Put it in the head,” a police officer instructed her, as she fired away at the cardboard prop representing a gunman. Betteridge is one of dozens of teachers and other school administrators undergoing active shooting training with the Utah County Sheriff's Department to stop, shoot, and kill anyone who may threaten the lives of their students.

As anti-gun as the 2020 Democratic presidential contenders have exposed themselves to be, much of the field still gives lip-service to the Second Amendment and the Constitution. Take for instance Joe Biden. The leading candidate’s campaign has said that Biden will seek to “respect the Second Amendment” and that “as president, Biden will pursue constitutional, common-sense gun safety policies.” However, take a critical look at the vast majority of the Democratic field for any limiting principle that would preclude even the most severe forms of gun control (like gun confiscation) and you will come up wanting.

Worman has been appealed to the Supreme Court, which will soon decide if it will take the case.

By now, you know the results of the elections for the Virginia state legislature. In essence, Michael Bloomberg now owns the lawmaking process in that state – lock, stock, and barrel. Those in Virginia will now see an extreme anti-Second Amendment agenda that doesn’t actually address the real problems we face in terms of public safety.

Kevin Drum Misses the Point on Guns

This Kevin Drum post responding to my piece on the Democrats’ bad-faith arguments regarding gun control is willfully obtuse. For starters, California doesn’t have “feeble” gun laws, it has the strictest gun laws anywhere in the country. Any stricter and they probably wouldn’t pass Constitutional scrutiny (even some of existing limits are being challenged.) And besides, even if Drum finds California laws meager, they’re still more stringent than the ones Democrats want to pass in D.C. And those restrictions — the ones we’re dealing with in the real world — have been shown to do nothing to mitigate school shootings, and did not even intersect with with this shooting.

On May 31, a disgruntled city employee entered a municipal building in Virginia Beach and opened fire, killing 12 people. Virginians were horrified, then outraged. Ever since the mass shooting that killed 32 people at Virginia Tech in 2007, there’d been a growing push to strengthen the state’s comparatively loose gun laws. But Virginia Beach was a tipping point: Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam convened a special legislative session in July with the sole purpose of passing gun control laws.

Governor Tony Evers says he has no immediate plans to call another special session on guns. Evers says he's open to calling lawmakers back to consider the measures, which would allow a judge to temporarily remove guns from a person deemed a threat to themselves or the public and a measure to require universal background checks on all purchases. But, the Democratic Governor is going to let the matter breathe for now.

Janine di Giovanni is a “senior fellow at Yale University’s Jackson Institute for Global Affairs” and she decided to pipe up for more gun control in the wake of the Santa Clarita school shooting. Montgomery County could become the largest in Texas to proclaim itself a "gun sanctuary." Precinct 2 Commissioner Charlie Riley introduced the measure, mainly to protect law enforcement from wasting resources on unconstitutional gun laws. "Protecting those guys from someone coming to us to enforce gun laws or do gun restrictions, or even try to take guns away from folks. We don't agree with that here in Montgomery County," said Riley.

If you carry a firearm for self-protection, the possibility of needing to resort to deadly force is present. Having to do so should be a last resort, and something we hope never happens. Still, in the aftermath of a self-defense shooting, one can anticipate a critical analysis of every aspect of their character, their decisions made, and even their gear. Be cognizant of what you wear, what you carry, and what you say. Say you were forced to use lethal force to defend yourself. You do everything right and you are completely justified.

The lowly .22 rimfire is the world’s oldest, most popular, and least expensive rifle cartridge. But it’s not very fast, flat shooting, or powerful. Three other rimfires are: the .17 HMR, .17 WSM, and .22 WMR. But which of the three wins the ballistic battle? Which shoots faster, flatter, harder, and deflects less in the wind?

The beginning of my education in deer bullets began in 1971 when I shot a mule deer with a 180-grain bullet from a .300 Weatherby at 200 yards or so. I hit him right through the lungs, and he ran off like Hussein Bolt at the Olympics. I was on an elk hunt when the deer presented itself, and the rifle was loaded with strong, slow-expanding slugs for 800-pound elk, not 200-pound deer.

All one has to do is check the evening news to realize that there is no safe place. It’s rather naive to assume that bad things can’t happen in any city, town, village or rural setting. Neither is it reasonable to decide to be a hermit and hide out until things get better—because there is no guarantee they will. The smart move is to be informed, be prepared and learn to deal with it.

The evidence is conclusive: those who assault will find another weapon, and when the laws actually punish those who defend themselves, the defenseless will be victimized.
