"Daley, an ardent gun-control advocate, said that even though guns were not used in the Sept. 11 attack, new gun regulations need to be passed. City attorneys are drafting legislation to require background checks on those who buy weapons at gun shows and to prohibit the sale of several types of semiautomatic military-style weapons to ordinary citizens. The legislation also would require that some types of military-style guns be registered with the state."
"This is different times. Sept. 11 is a different time," Daley said. "The Police Department thinks it's very important." |

"LONDON (Reuters) - Guns are not for us -- that is the somber message from toyshops round the world as the U.S. kamikaze attacks cast a dark shadow over parents buying Christmas presents."
This "report" tells us that toy gun sales are down all over the world, more or less, then gives us this quote:
"Hamleys, London's most famous toy store, stopped selling toy guns after the 1996 Dunblane massacre when a crazed gunman ran amok in a Scottish primary school." |

The Libertarians quoted various media reports as proof that gun sales have increased among all demographic groups, especially women, after the September 11th attacks. Politicians should take notice, Dasbach said, and immediately start repealing laws that prohibit law-abiding Americans from buying and carrying guns to protect themselves and their families.

The Hartford Courant reported that the Connecticut Board of Firearms Permit Examiners denied a handgun permit to Michael Gibbs, a 24 year-old leader of the World Church of the Creator, an organization which the board called "a recognized hate group." Of course, the first question this author asked upon learning of the case is, "recognized’ by whom?" |

"At stake in the gun control debate is whether we control government and defend freedom, or government controls us. Should our defense against hijacking terrorism be limited to government fighter planes shooting down hijacked planes, killing everyone on board, or extended to allowing airplane crews and qualified passengers (such as off-duty law enforcement officials) to take defensive measures without fear of litigation or prosecution?" |

But the bills have much in common. Both would allow pilots to carry guns if they are trained and choose to do so. Both would strengthen cockpit doors, screen checked bags and deploy more air marshals on flights. |

The story involves a felon in possession of a firearm. (If it was a non-violent felony, there is nothing constitutional about the prohibition, but that isn't the point of this submission.)
Says the report, "deputies seized four weapons, including a sawed-off shotgun, a rifle and two pistols. Cromartie was charged with possession of a weapon of mass destruction..."

An enlarged photograph of the pair leaned against a back wall. In it, the men lounge in portable chairs underneath a swastika they'd gouged in a tree."

[One item of interest hidden toward the end of the story. Does this count as self defense?]
"In Goodhue County near St. Paul, Sheriff Dean Albers said residents reported on Oct. 7 that two carloads of men who appeared to be Middle Easterners drove away shortly after they were approached by a local landowner and a man who was hunting on the property. Albers said police were unable to find the men." |

"State House and Senate leaders created a special task force Wednesday to examine security issues in Oklahoma, mainly the state's ability to protect its citizens from a terrorist attack.
[House Speaker Larry] Adair said the first duty of government is public safety.
Group members assured the public the state is ready for disasters, and would respond quickly to any threat, including bioterrorism."
[The state will respond - so the residents just sit there?] |
