"Congress finally did something right, and we should all applaud. The Senate and the House passed a law that shields gun manufacturers from politically-motivated lawsuits."
"I just read a rant by a liberal columnist on the subject, and as usual, in his hysteria, he got the facts wrong. ... If they produce a defective product that causes injury, they can still be sued. All the new law does is put them on a level playing field with every other manufacturer." ...
"... The Second Amendment is the canary that monitors our freedom. When it dies, freedom dies. Even if you don't wish to own a firearm, you should join the National Rifle Association and defend the Second Amendment against those who want the government to have a monopoly on force." |

"Gun ownership is rising and there is no definitive evidence that a decade of restrictive firearms laws has done anything to reduce weapon-related crime, according to NSW's top criminal statistician."
"The latest figures show a renaissance in firearm ownership in the state - a 25 per cent increase in three years. And the head of the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research, Don Weatherburn, said falls in armed robberies and abductions in NSW in the past few years had more to do with the heroin drought and good policing than firearms legislation."
"Even falls in the homicide rate, which have been steady, began long before the gun law debate provoked by the Port Arthur massacre in 1996." ... |

Beaufort County Sheriff's Office deputies patrolled the parking lots adjacent to Hilton Head High School at dismissal Monday to ensure student safety after a 17-year-old suspect was arrested Friday while carrying a .380 semi-automatic pistol.
Obie Schramm, a community development specialist for the Beaufort County School District, said everything went smoothly at the campus Monday and there were no additional incidents.
Hilton Head High's school resource officer requested extra patrol cars in the parking behind and on the side of the school while students were leaving at the end of the day as a precautionary measure, she said. |

"When conservatives object to 'activist' judges what do they mean?"
"Typically it is one of two things:"
"1) Judges who don't feel bound by the original meaning of the constitution, instead subscribing to the theory that the document 'lives and breathes,' allowing them significant leeway to impose their policy preferences through judicial fiat."
"2) Judges who thwart the will of the people - often as expressed through Congress - by treating the judiciary as a more powerful branch than is warranted, striking down democratically enacted statutes."
"Too often, however, these concepts are muddled together by labeling a judge 'activist' without further explanation. ..." ... |

"In 1986, President Ronald Reagan signed the McClure-Volkmer Act, which severely weakened federal gun laws, but had one redeeming provision: it banned transfer and possession of machine guns not legally owned when the Act went into effect."
"Since then, criminals have repeatedly tried to escape culpability for illegal possession of machine guns by arguing that the ban is unconstitutional. The courts have unanimously upheld the law as constitutional; every Circuit Court of Appeal to consider the issue has upheld the ban, and the Supreme Court has consistently refused to consider any cases challenging its constitutionality. (Some of the cases are listed below.)"
"But if Judge Samuel Alito's view had prevailed, the Third Circuit Court of Appeals would have struck the law down as unconstitutional in 1996. On this issue, Judge Alito is far outside the mainstream of American constitutional jurisprudence." ... |
