A Skokie police officer is charged with aggravated battery and official misconduct after surveillance video shows him allegedly pushing a female detainee into the cell lockup.
He allegedly pushed Cassandra Fuerstein, 47, into an unpadded bench at the jail. The woman suffered fractured bones in her face that required reconstructive surgery, as well as dental and vision problems.
"All the bones in her face were broken. She had to have facial reconstruction. There is a titanium cheekbone," Torri Hamilton, Feurstein's attorney, said. "It's something that is going to affect her for the rest of her life." |

HB-4003 is a REPEALER bill that will repeal the "Stand Your Ground" law. The bill would repeal provisions of our self-defense laws relating to home protection & use of deadly force. It would once again put the law on the side of criminals.
The repeal would re-impose the "duty to retreat" and give protection to criminals by denying victims the right to fight back without first trying to run away. It would remove the law that allows you to stand your ground and fight back in the face of an attack likely to cause death or great bodily harm. This a bill to protect criminals. |

“Stand Your Ground” in its simplest form means “that there is no duty to retreat when a person is assaulted in a place where he or she has a right to be.” If you are legally allowed to carry a firearm, not engaging in criminal activity, and have the right to be where you are then you have no duty under law to run away from someone attacking you. It does not mean you can instigate a fight. It does not mean you can retrieve a firearm after a fight. It does not mean you can carry a firearm illegally. It does not mean you can conduct a crime and then claim you were only acting in self-defense. In the simplest terms, Stand Your Ground means you can defend yourself to your max extent and choose to fight or flee, whichever is your best option.

It’s a simple but earnest request: allow us to carry firearms for self-defense. That’s all the University of Kentucky Students for Concealed Carry would like, an opportunity to exercise their Constitutional right to keep and bear arms while on campus.
“Our basic goal is to get legislation passed through the state legislature to prevent public universities from telling students with concealed permits that they cannot carry weapons on campus,” the group’s director, 22-year-old Taylor Waide, said. “Our goal is to get attention and to get our mission out.” |

The FBI will investigate the shooting of a young black man in Columbia after the local prosecutor declined to press charges.
Twenty-five-year-old Brandon Coleman, a groundskeeper at the University of Missouri, was shot to death by a white man May 19 after a confrontation in Columbia. Boone County prosecutor Dan Knight announced Wednesday that he wouldn't file charges, saying the shooting was "legally justified" under the state's self-defense laws.
Coleman's mother sought the federal investigation because she believes racial prejudice played a role in Knight's decision. |

Not long ago, I was approached by a man and woman from the UK who wanted some training and the chance to shoot guns. They were in the United States on vacation and one of the items on their vacation list was to find a certified instructor and have the once in a lifetime chance to “experience what it’s like to be American for a few hours with the legal right to shoot rifles and guns.”
They told me that in the UK, they could not own guns and they really did not understand this “passion” Americans had for firearms and shooting since, (in their words) “guns are dangerous tools of violence and kill people.” |

The sponsor of HB 436, Representative Doug Funderburk (R-St. Peters) says the idea of barring the publishing of gun owners’ names has not been abandoned. “The issue of publishing lists or publishing names is one we’re going to have to work on separately and try to figure out what is the right balance … the language that protects the publishing of overall lists but doesn’t limit anyone’s right, not just the media, but anyone’s right to the First Amendment. That’s still a work in progress.” |

Gun-rights advocates blamed Gov. Andrew Cuomo and lawmakers for a second firearms company deciding to move out of New York since enactment of the SAFE Act, but gun-control groups dismissed their criticism.
American Tactical Imports, a Rochester company that makes and imports firearms and ammunition, announced this week it will move to South Carolina. The company said it will start the re-location effort next month.
That state's governor has boasted about the company's decision. The company said it will bring or create 117 jobs in South Carolina. |

Common sense indicates that CPL licensees should have some familiarity with the weapons they plan to carry concealed. I may be naïve but I would like to believe that even the most strident Second Amendment advocates would support adequate pistol safety training prior to the issuance of a CPL. Judging by the online comments to my column, I am probably wrong. After all, as it was later pointed out to me, there are four states in this country that do not require any permit or training whatsoever for individuals to conceal and carry their legally owned handguns. |

A standing room only crowd packed the Via Room at First National Bank Thursday night to attend the League of Women Voters panel discussion on the concealed carry law that goes into effect Jan. 1 in Illinois.
Panel speakers included Rock, Rochelle Police Chief Eric Higby, DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott and Ogle County Sheriff Michael Harn. With the law being new and not currently in effect, the discussion was also a learning opportunity for the guest speakers. The Illinois State Police department will be responsible for distributing a concealed carry license.
In order to obtain a handgun legally in the state individuals need to have a Firearm Owner Identification (FOID) card, prior to applying for a concealed carry license. |

Every legislator, every elected politician, every police officer and person in the military takes an oath to uphold the Constitution and defend it against all enemies, foreign and domestic. They do not take an oath to follow orders given by the Supreme Court.
It is a myth that only the Supreme Court can interpret the Constitution. It was not always so, and legislators and juries commonly interpreted the Constitution in the United States before the “progressive” era. One of the strongest checks on government power is the power of the jury. A jury has the power to decide that a law is unconstitutional or that a particular application of a law is unjust. |

The big gun show at the Cow Palace this weekend in Daly City will be the first since Gov. Jerry Brown vetoed a bill that would have ended all gun shows at that venue. The show becomes even more controversial with the shooting today at Los Angeles International Airport.
According to a video by the gun show, "During the last year, Crossroads of the West gun shows attracted over 400,000 customers." |
