In a move that sparked debate on social media, Eastpointe police Thursday announced a new local law banning storage of a firearm in an unlocked motor vehicle.
The police department posted the ordinance on its Facebook page Thursday afternoon and and by 8 p.m., about 500 people had commented.
Eastpointe police said the ordinance, which has been adopted by the City Council, was in response to an "inordinate" number of guns being stolen from unlocked cars or trucks. Its aim is to make gun owners "more responsible."
"There is no reason to store a firearm in a vehicle that is not secured, especially overnight," police officials said in their Facebook post.

A grassroots coalition of gun-rights supporters descended onto the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol building Saturday, rallying to forestall congressional action on gun control that has been gaining steam over the past few months.
One reporter estimated that by 1 p.m., over 1,000 people had turned out. The event, titled "Rally for Your Rights," was organized largely by gun-rights enthusiasts without the backing of major pro-gun organizations. |

An opinion piece in The Atlantic, titled “A Constitutional Case for Gun Control,” showed how tangled the mainstream media’s narrative on guns is nationally.
The opinion article was written by two Yale Law School students. Like many on the anti-gun left, they are clearly worried that a majority of U.S. Supreme Court justices will honestly interpret the Second Amendment of the U.S. Bill of Rights when they rule on New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Inc. v. City of New York sometime next year. |

The National Rifle Association's Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA) welcomes Oklahoma as the newest constitutional carry state. Constitutional carry, now the law in 16 states across the country, allows law-abiding citizens to carry concealed firearms without first getting government permission to do.
The NRA-backed law, which took effect Friday, Nov. 1, fully recognizes the constitutional right of law-abiding gun owners to carry a firearm openly or concealed without a permit. |

Upset, family and friends of the victim, Markis Square, 30, rushed out of Superior Court Judge Salvador Vasquez’s courtroom Friday afternoon minutes after Vasquez read three “not guilty” verdicts out loud. |

Brazil is caught in a "civil war" of crime and violence, the head of Congress' pro-gun faction says, warning that ordinary Brazilians need to be armed and ready to fight back.
Wearing an electric blue suit with matching glasses, and a heavy gold ring with the seal of Congress on his finger, Jose Augusto Rosa is both a high-profile lawmaker and a reserve captain in Sao Paulo's gendarme-style military police. |
