". . . Mike Bloomberg, that is."
"Perhaps stung by jealousy at the amount of publicity NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg got from his little (possibly illegal?) 'sting' operation against gun shows, the Brady Campaign is now hyping a similar operation of its own. Says Brady Campaign president Paul Helmke:""Should someone who wants to buy a military-style assault weapon be required to undergo a criminal background check?" "This, remember, is about the 'gun show loophole' (by which Helmke and his ilk really mean the private sales 'loophole'), rather than so-called 'assault weapons,' ..." ... |

"I'm amazed at the persistent anti-gun sentiment of both Patti Morey and Tom Dimitre (see Nov. 11 letters). However, instead of attacking them personally, which is non-productive, I instead refer back to my own letter in the Nov. 12 Medford Mail Tribune: 'Gun accidents are preventable.' In the letter, I allude to Chris Bird's authoritative book, 'The Concealed Handgun Manual: How To Choose, Carry, and Shoot A Gun in Self Defense.' This same gun writer and small arms authority also is author of 'Thank God I Had A Gun.' Of course, it's unfortunate the victims of so called 'gun violence,' which is actually 'criminal violence,' continue to blame the gun, and not the perpetrator and felon, for such anti-social atrocities." ... |

When you think of guns, don't think of the harm they do, which numbers around 14,000 or so last year in the hands of persons who already are prohibited, think of the good they do in the hands of 2.5 million American citizens who stop a crime in progress every year. The other 300 million gun owners are not only lucky in not having to draw their weapons, but they are also not among those committing the violence in America." ... |

"Below, my colleague Orin offers his predictions as to whether the Supreme Court will restore the 'lost' Privileges or Immunities Clause to constitutional law. He may well be correct in predicting but a single vote for that proposition, but I remember when many predicted Angel Raich would get 0–1 votes for her Commerce Clause challenge to the Controlled Substances Act. Instead, in addition to Justice Thomas’s vote, she also received the support of Chief Justice Rehnquist and Justice O'Connor–in a 'marijuana case' no less. True, her challenge did fail, as widely predicted, but she definitely beat the spread." ... |

"Our interest in a single Supreme Court case has perhaps never been as high as it is in a case currently being briefed. The issues are fascinating on several levels, and the potential impact of a ruling is big."
"The case is McDonald v. City of Chicago, for which the court granted cert on Sept. 30. The petitioners in the case, a group challenging a gun-control ordinance in Chicago, filed their brief with the court earlier this week. Were the court to adopt their position — something well within the realm of possibility — we could be looking at a significant shift in the way the justices view the Constitution and individual rights." ... |

"On November 16, the Second Amendment Foundation filed a brief in the U.S. Supreme Court case of McDonald v. Chicago, challenging the constitutionality of the city’s ban on handguns."
"'The brief really is aimed more at the center left of the court, because I believe we've got the political right of the court on our side based on the Heller decision,' said Alan Gottlieb, founder of the Second Amendment Foundation. 'I think our brief at minimum will make some of the liberals a little uncomfortable, because, while they may not be for guns, they're for rights -- and what we're looking to do is really expand the Bill of Rights in general in its interpretation as it's applied to the states.'" ... |
