"There is no way an NRA board member, especially a long-term one, should ever have endorsed a candidate with Dold’s established anti-gun record and sentiments, no matter what the reason or who his competition was."

Under no circumstances will I return to my vehicle with a loaded weapon still in yours, so don’t get the idea that it is violating your rights for me to hold onto your gun for a few minutes.

I remove the magazine and unload the weapon. I will then take all of the bullets out of the magazine. I will re-approach your car, explain that you are/aren't getting a citation, I am handing you a bunch of bullets to be put straight in the cup holder, and that I am going to place your firearm in the back seat and the magazine a few feet away from it. I then explain that under no circumstances are you to mess with that weapon until I am out of sight. I then return to my vehicle and leave.

Ed.: The comments are instructive.

Inviting Americans to “Meet the Mayors” who have been involved in the anti-gun-rights Mayors Against Illegal Guns, the Second Amendment Foundation is launching a campaign in newspapers, magazines and on the Internet that exposes the criminal and ethical wrongdoings of many members of that organization.

Passing through the sometimes crowded aisles of the Washington Arms Collectors’ monthly gun show at the Puyallup Fairgrounds, there was no question that a lot of people were there doing some serious shopping in the wake of the Nov. 6 election.

There was also no doubt that some people in that pavilion had voted for Obama, and were in a rather interesting quandry: how to engage in a conversation about the election while not necessarily being confrontational or combative. A couple seemed smug without daring to engage in a full debate. All of the "suspects" invariably spoke without looking us in the eye and countered with boilerplate rationalization on the level of, "Well, you still have your guns, don't you?"

Guns in the State House: As a hunter and gun owner I’m a staunch advocate of our Second Amendment rights. But I also believe the Legislature’s class of 2010 went overboard with its pro-gun-at-all-costs agenda.

How about this? Don’t reinstate the State House gun ban unless you are willing to install metal detectors manned by armed security guards – just like at courthouses across the state.

Caution: Doing this will cost money.

Worried About a Ban? High cap shotguns might be the answer

A good friend of mine put much of his collection up for sale last week. His Remington 870. A Springfield 1903A1. Some pistols and revolvers. I was shocked. He's not selling these because demand for them is especially high. He's selling them and using the money to buy what he may not be able to buy if any new ban does go into effect.

He even traded his AK-74 for an AR-15. He loved his AK-74. When I reminded him, he shook his head sadly. "If there is any kind of ban," he said, "I may not be able to get enough surplus 5.45x39. They may stop importing it."

There seems to be a little confusion on the part of gun enthusiasts about what a second Obama term means for them, and how they can battle any efforts to control their firearms ownership.

First, there are the nervous sorts who raced out and bought guns rights away after President Obama was re-elected. The subtext is that somehow this president will take away their guns—and yet there is no evidence to indicate that.

The lead detective in the George Zimmerman murder trial has hired famed lawyer Jose Baez to represent him as he maneuvers the next steps of the contentious, high-profile case, The Miami Herald has learned.

...

Defense lawyer Mark O’Mara recently began interviewing Sanford police officers and detectives to determine who at the department wanted to arrest Zimmerman. Early interviews suggested the department was largely in agreement that there was no case against Zimmerman, O’Mara has said.

An FBI report released this summer showed Serino told agents that he was pressured by African-American officers to file charges.

A clerk at a Millcreek Township beer store told township police that a man wearing dark clothing and a ski mask over his head walked into the business with a gun on Saturday night and demanded money.

When the clerk told the robber that he had a gun, the clerk said the robber "became increasingly threatening" with his handgun, Millcreek Police Chief Tom Carlotti said Monday.

The clerk said he then pulled out his gun and fired it, shooting the robber.

The accused robber, 21-year-old Patrick Atkins, of Lake City, was pronounced dead 38 minutes later.

"An anti-gun owner initiative considered in Washington could lead to massive civil disobedience and a severe domestic crisis," gun law expert John M. Snyder said today.

"According to confidential information," he continued, "forces linked with the administration suggest the government classify semiautomatic firearms and multiple capacity ammunition feeding devices as Title 2 National Firearms Act items under the Gun Control Act of 1968.

"Under this scenario, semiautomatics and high capacity magazines could be acquired only with great difficulty and at great expense by America's estimated 100 million law-abiding firearms owners."

Sturm, Ruger & Co. Inc. has a problem most companies would love: It's selling its products so quickly that the company can barely make them fast enough.

The Connecticut-based gun manufacturer, with a major facility in Newport, N.H., reported a net income of $17.4 million in the third quarter (88 cents per share, with nearly 38 cents disbursed as dividends) -- a 62 percent increase, compared to the third quarter of 2011. The growth was mainly due to net sales of 118.2 million.

Canton police Detective Chip Yeaton, who sounds like a caring citizen and father, spoke in support of the proposed school program, called ALICE, which stands for alert, lockdown, inform, counter, evacuate. Yeaton said that “school shootings continue to happen, and young people are dying. We need to change the philosophy.”

Yeaton is right, but his focus is wrong. Our philosophy does indeed need to change: We need to find the real and moral courage to stand down the gun lobbies — the National Rifle Association and other Second Amendment zealots — whose reckless defense of gun rights has led to a society where almost anyone can acquire a Glock 9mm and the ammunition needed to ruin lives and communities in seconds.

At Federalist Society, Scalia Says He Doesn't 'Live or Die' for Bill of Rights Cases

In defending originalism – a subset of textualism that focuses on the public meaning of a law or constitutional provision when it was adopted – Scalia said it wasn't necessary for judges to be trained historians. Judges constantly rely on experts, he said, citing patent cases as an example. Lawyers rarely addressed historical perspectives when he first took the bench, he said, but they've increasingly done so as more judges have adopted an originalist approach. In reaching the court's landmark Second Amendment decision in 2008 in District of Columbia v. Heller, for example, Scalia said the court got significant historical assistance in amicus briefs.

I have a bunch of emails from various organizations that claim this treaty is a back door to taking down our Second Amendment rights and banning citizens from having any guns.

I am just as concerned about protecting our Second Amendment rights as you. What I refuse to do is get caught up in hype.

For example, do you think the president can enact a complete ban on guns for U.S. citizens through the signing of an international treaty? If you do, I have a bridge to sell to you.

In July, the United Nations proposed a treaty that would regulate international trade in conventional weapons.

Nearly four months later, the re-election of President Barack Obama has seen an increase in gun sales because citizens fear Obama could potentially limit the use of firearms.

J.D. Clay, salesperson at Sharp Shooters Knife and Gun, a local gun shop, said the business saw an increase in gun sales the Wednesday following the election.

“A lot of it revolves around people being uncertain of what is going to happen in the near future,” Clay said.

Anti-Gunners’ Ratings Miss the Mark Again

It used to be only the Brady Campaign that “graded” the states on their gun laws. Now, the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence (previously the Legal Community Against Violence, a group of anti-gun lawyers in San Francisco, funded by the Joyce Foundation and some of the other usual suspects) has gotten into the act.

And it is indeed an “act,” as the anti-gun groups’ “grades” are pure sideshow–frivolous distractions from serious discussions about the (non-)relationship between gun control laws and crime take place.

In an interview with NPR, Whitney talked specifically about the aim of his book.

"What I wanted to do was suggest that especially liberals, who are generally in favor of gun control, should say, 'Now, look, we agree that the right to keep and bear arms is an individual right, and it's protected by the Second Amendment. Now let's talk about ways to make it safer to have all these guns.' That must be as much in the interest of gun owners as it is in the interest of people who fear gun violence."

Indeed it is. Gun owners want to keep guns out of the hands of criminals, the mentally ill, the homicidal, etc., just as much as the pro-gun control crowd.

Jessica Stephens drives a night cab in Yuma.

"Technically, we're not allowed to carry weapons at all. Guns? … definitely not. We're not allowed to arm ourselves like that," explains Stephens.

No guns in Arizona? We talked to Master Police Officer Vidal Cruz of the Yuma Police Department.

"They have every right as any other citizen; they have the right to bear arms, if their right has not been revoked," says Cruz.

Gun rights are revoked to convicted felons or people deemed a danger to themselves and others. The ban on guns for taxi drivers is coming from the cab companies. The policy means drivers are forced to find other ways to protect themselves.

Inside Prescott’s apartment, police discovered two dozen guns and thousands of rounds of ammunition. Every weapon Prescott owned, he bought legally. WJZ obtained his application to become a gun collector, which was approved. He could buy as many guns as he wanted.

“There are therefore no gun charges that the state can bring at this time,” said Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Angela Alsobrooks.

Alsobrooks prosecuted Prescott. She believes Maryland gun laws should be re-examined to weed out people who shouldn’t have a collector’s permit, including people with mental illness.
