Area businesses received their annual financial boost from hunters getting ready for Michigan’s firearm deer season. The season officially started Thursday. At Elmer’s County Market, sales were strong for the days leading up to Nov. 15.

“So far, so good — we’re getting our groups starting to come in,” Rod Stende, general manager of Elmer’s County Market, said.

According to Stende, deer season is typically one of the busiest times of year at Elmer’s.

“It’s close to Thanksgiving, but not as much as Christmas,” he said.

Some of the items most commonly purchased at Elmer’s by deer hunters in the area include bacon, eggs, beer & pickled items. Many hunters indulge in their own food-related traditions at this time of year, as well.

Miami-Dade’s top prosecutor wanted the Florida Supreme Court to know her office believes the state’s controversial self-defense law is unconstitutional. Justices aren’t allowing it. The Florida Supreme Court on Monday declined to allow Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle to introduce her position in the ongoing legal fight over the state’s Stand Your Ground law. She was the first state attorney to break with Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, whose office is defending the broadened “Stand Your Ground” law passed by the Florida Legislature last year.

As the City of Republic, Wash., the county seat of Ferry County, prepares to consider itself essentially a Second Amendment sanctuary city tonight, an essay in the National Review declares that it is time to stop treating the amendment as a “second-class right.”

Republic Police Chief Loren Culp, appearing on Fox News over the weekend, explained his recent declaration that recently-passed gun control Initiative 1639 will not be enforced in his jurisdiction so long as he remains on the job.

The old, picturesque mining town of Republic in northeast Washington is 300 miles from Seattle, and a long, long ways from how Seattle folks think about issues. Like guns. Loren Culp, the police chief in Republic, pop. 1,100, recently got a big shout-out from Ted Nugent, the “Cat Scratch Fever” rocker who these days is also known for his gun-rights and hard conservative views, and calls himself the “Motor City Madman.”

If you ever find yourself competing in a brass flinging contest, we’ve found the perfect gun for you. The new Springfield Armory Range Officer Elite 10mm tosses brass as good as any Olympic Hammer Throw contestant. OK, so maybe aeronautical brass engineering isn’t the most useful criteria for selecting a handgun, but it did add some entertainment to our testing sessions. On a more serious note, let’s just say this new 10mm 1911 pistol from Springfield Armory has some serious mojo.

Newsweek writer Nina Burleigh claimed Saturday that almost every person she has heard of who owns an AR-15 rifle “has been a mass murderer.” And “based on Twitter sample the rest of them are scarily paranoid,” Burleigh tweeted. “Get on the right side of history,” she urged, tagging NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch and right-wing personality Joe Biggs, who are both outspoken supporters of the Second Amendment.

Oregon has joined a coalition of states intent on changing how they invest money in the firearms industry to push gun safety reforms. The move by the Oregon State Treasury — which manages the multi-billion-dollar Oregon Public Employees Retirement Fund — reflects an increased level of scrutiny for gun-related manufacturers not just from the halls of Congress, but from low-profile corners of state government that seek to influence how the industry does business.

In what is being touted as one of the toughest such zero-tolerance measures aimed at cops, Atlanta police say officers will be slapped with a hefty fine if their city-issued guns are stolen. Since 2010, APD officers have reported 55 lost or stolen guns — nine this year. Now they’ll be subject to a fine of up to $500 and a minimum three-day suspension if they fail to follow department guidelines on properly securing their weapons when left in an unattended vehicle. The new policy went into effect last Thursday.

AMONG THE BIGGEST spenders on Facebook political ads during the recent midterm campaigns are some names you’d probably expect. There’s Beto O’Rourke, who lost to Ted Cruz in the Texas Senate race. There’s President Donald Trump—both his campaign and his super PAC. There are billionaires like J.B. Pritzker, incoming governor of Illinois, and Tom Steyer, the environmentalist leading the campaign to impeach Trump. And of course, there’s a multibillion-dollar oil giant, ExxonMobil. But tucked into that list, rounding out the top 10, is a name few have heard of: Concealed Online.

Sioux City officials are in the process of changing the city’s weapons code to prohibit people from carrying toy firearms like BB guns in city limits. Local police say these guns look like real firearms, and banning them could curb crime. Sioux City council members passed a second reading of the ordinance on Monday. A first reading was passed in early November and the city council will revisit it for a third time next week.

A week ago, the National Rifle Association told doctors to mind their own business when it comes to guns: “Someone should tell self-important anti-gun doctors to stay in their lane,” the NRA tweeted. That was about as stupid a thing as the NRA has ever said, which is some trick. As if spilled blood respects lanes. As if we don’t ask doctors every day to save us from guns.

There are some pro-Second Amendment citizens that say they feel put off by the National Rifle Association’s politics. That’s leading to the emergence of left-leaning shooting groups across the country. Meet the Socialist Rifle Association in Alaska. It’s the Sunday before the election and members of the Socialist Rifle Association are meeting at a public shooting range on the outskirts of Anchorage. It’s the group’s first “range day” where the membership (all two of them) meet to shoot guns and talk politics.
