With "popular support" for a national ID system gaining ground, Congress once again is "being forced" to debate an idea it has rejected numerous times.
BUT-- At a House Government Reform subcommittee hearing on the matter today, Janice Schakowsky (D-IL), said Sept. 11 demonstrated that a national ID system would not have stopped the terrorist attacks. "The events of Sept. 11 show us that systems like national identification cards will not deter the crazed terrorist from his or her mission." |

GOA Alerts -- legal theories attempted to outlaw both cigarettes and guns by arguing that manufacturers should be held liable for all adverse consequences stemming from misuse of those products.
Currently, the targets are tobacco companies. But gun dealers, manufacturers, and owners could just as easily be the victims of these lawsuits in the future.
ACTION: Write the Bush administration. Ask it to drop lawsuits against companies that use theories which could also outlaw gun ownership. |

In a letter to Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta today, the Allied Pilots Association (APA), collective bargaining agent for the nearly 12,000 pilots of American Airlines, praised the "Airport Security Federalization Act of 2001" and called for "a more definitive approach concerning the arming of pilots." As written, the Act authorizes the carriage of firearms only "if the policy of the air carrier permits its pilots to be armed." |

"Common Sense About Kids and Guns" encourages adults to follow these six "common-sense safety" steps.
All gun owners must:
- Unload and lock up guns. - Lock and store ammunition separately. - Keep keys and combinations where kids are unable to find them.
All parents must:
- Ask if guns are safely stored at places their kids visit or play. - Talk with their kids about guns. - Teach young children not to touch a gun and to tell an adult immediately if they find one. |

"I need to have that extraordinary option at my fingertips," Bush said after a Cabinet meeting yesterday. "I ought to be able to have that option available should we ever bring one of these al Qaeda members in alive. It's our national interests, it's our national security interests that we have a military tribunal available. It is in the interests of the safety of potential jurors that we have a military tribunal." |

"It is commonplace to assume that toppling the Taliban will free Afghan women. But in an unstable country where soldiers celebrate conquest by raping — and where there is currently no guarantee that whatever form of government eventually assumes control will not be equally oppressive toward females — women have to protect themselves to remain free."
In the Nov. 12 Newsday, journalists Matthew McAllester and Ilana Ozernoy quoted a woman named Malika, a mother whose family lived on the Taliban front line of Bagram just north of Kabul. "At night I go up on the roof with my Kalashnikov [a Russian assault rifle] and my hand grenades to protect my house," Malika declared. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise, and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be the constant companion of your walks. — Thomas Jefferson, Encyclopedia of T. Jefferson, 318, Foley, Ed., reissued 1967. |
