Gunfire, camouflage jackets and outdoorsmen of all ages all were signs Saturday that the Bay County Shooting Range is officially open and ready for business. The range celebrated its grand opening Saturday with marksmanship challenges, a sporting clays introduction and a Bay County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team demonstration. Hundreds passed by throughout the day to check out the range and fire off guns.

Gun shop owners say sales in the Tri-State area surged before the Nov. 8 election, with fears that if Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton were elected president, she would enact new gun control legislation. As Clinton called for tighter background checks and restrictions on military-style weapons, people stocked up on everything from handguns to AR-15 rifles, in case she was elected. Now that Republican Donald Trump has won the election, gun shop owners are working overtime to restock their shelves for the current holiday and hunting season.

Three more people – including the grandson of a U.S. Congressman – were shot and killed in Chicago on Friday. Fifteen-year-old Jovan Wilson was in his home in Englewood when two other teenagers broke into the residence and began arguing with him – one of them shooting him fatally in the head. That’s according to police reports obtained by The Chicago Sun Times.

We expect most “First Gear” readers are sharing our collective sigh of relief over the election results. A murder and racial hate crime jury trial for a Vallejo man accused of the 2014 shooting and killing a 57-year-old African-American woman ended Thursday with not guilty verdicts. Michael D. Wilson, 47, fatally shot Lillie Mae Christianson with a high-powered rifle during an ongoing altercation on the night of July 13, 2014. The shooting culminated years of disputes between neighbors along Mare Island Way in Vallejo.

Back in June, the US Department of Justice proposed a list of specifications for manufactures of smart guns: a preliminary outline of the baseline features law enforcement agencies wanted to see in the future of pistol safety technology. This included a slew of safety features, failsafe countermeasures and requirements for rechargeable and replaceable batteries. Now, the government has made that draft official.

A converted fruit warehouse has become a destination spot for Central Washington’s target shooting fans. The Range opened in 2013, supplementing a custom firearm shop called Tactical Supply. It is the only commercial indoor shooting range in Yakima County, with the nearest competition in the Tri-Cities and Bellevue, The Range representatives said.

Look around various gun forums or talk to gun owners and there are likely going to be some people that just hate on Glocks, the Glock safety system, and any and all derivatives of them. To be sure, there are a lot of Glock-inspired or derived (or outright copied) pistols on the market. The polymer-framed striker-fired pistol format is far more popular now compared to any other firing mechanism, as double/single-action pistols are becoming increasingly rare.
