Seattle Mayor's Plan Disregards State Law, AG Opinion Says CCRKBA

"A draft proposal issued Friday by Mayor Greg Nickels outlining his scheme to ignore state statute and state legislative authority over firearms regulation amounts to a slap in the face against more than 250,000 Washington state residents, the [CCRKBA] said in response."

"'We’re going to review this draft proposal line-by-line,' said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb, 'but even a cursory glance at the document released Friday by Mayor Nickels shows that he has chosen to arrogantly ignore the State Attorney General's opinion. State statute clearly limits municipal authority, and the Nickels plan suggests he is attempting to be a little too clever in trying an end-run around the law.'" ...

"And special privileges and immunities, that is, the super citizen status, extend beyond being trusted with a gun. Osiecki only served a tenth of his drunk driving sentence, and tried to use his position to get all charges dropped 'as a 'professional courtesy.' And after an armed 'domestic altercation' in his home, Osiecki still retained a weapon on the job and had 'at least two handguns in the house.'" ...

"Over the last several weeks, hundreds of stories have appeared nationwide about increasing firearm sales due to gun owners' concerns that President-elect Obama and a Democrat-controlled Congress will pass legislation limiting the Second Amendment rights of Americans."

"Firearms retailers report that many firearm customers are interested in buying semi-automatic rifles that have a military look to them. There is much confusion among the public and the media about how these rifles function and about their legitimate uses for target shooting and hunting. Often incorrectly referred to as semi-automatic 'assault weapons,' they are the type of firearms that President-elect Obama has indicated he would seek to ban ..." ...

Submitter's Note: Lew Rockwell interviews Dr. Thomas Szasz, a psychiatrist who explains that psychiatry developed around 300 years ago as an arm of the law. The of purpose of psychiatry is to get rid of unwanted people. Listen to this podcast and keep in mind that we can lose our gun rights if judged as "mental defective"; that the FBI keeps (and is expanding) its Mental Defective File.

... "The last thing that a President needs is an appointee who has legal issues or any surprises. The NRA had a field day in attacking Richard Mell as a hypocrite for failing to reregister his guns and then sponsoring a local ordinance to make himself 'legal'. If Obama appointed someone to an office with Mell type issues the NRA would go full blast on that. It is not unreasonable to avoid that issue upfront by asking questions. There is a reason for the nickname 'No Drama Obama'." ...

FULL TEXT BELOW:

The sleeping resident was woken around 1030pm last night after hearing a strange noise in the downstairs of his home in the 1900 block of Montrose Street in South Philadelphia.

After finding an open window on the first floor of his two story row home, the resident started to search the rest of the property from top to bottom, and was startled to find a male hunched up in the corner of a spare bedroom.

The resident pulled his gun and a violent struggle ensued between the robber and resident. During the struggle the robber was shot.

The burglar, a male in his 30’s, was taken to the hospital where he later died.

The homeowner was not injured and will probably not face charges.

Barack Obama's Chief of Staff is Sarah Brady's 'go-to' guy' - a 'good friend' of gun control

"Judging by our email InBox, there are at least a few gun owners who refused to believe the warnings Second Amendment defenders like the [NRA] and Buckeye Firearms Association offered about what a Barack Obama administration would mean for gun control. If they didn't believe the evidence provided by his record ... maybe they'll believe a woman with a 23 year history of support for the most radical gun control efforts in our nation's history."

"In a letter to supporters, Sarah Brady praises Obama's choice for Chief of Staff, and calls the NRA F-rated Rahm Emanuel a 'good friend' of gun control who served as her 'go-to' guy' in the White House during efforts to pass the Clinton Gun Ban." ...

"Earlier this year, Eric Holder--along with Janet Reno ... co-signed an amicus brief in District of Columbia v. Heller. The brief was filed in support of DC's ban on all handguns, and ban on the use of any firearm for self-defense in the home. The brief argued that the Second Amendment is a 'collective' right, not an individual one, and asserted that belief in the collective right had been the consistent policy of the U.S. Department of Justice since the FDR administration. A brief filed by some other former DOJ officials (including several Attorneys General, and Stuart Gerson, who was Acting Attorney General until Janet Reno was confirmed) took issue with the Reno-Holder brief's characterization of DOJ's viewpoint." ...

After Columbine, [Attorney General nominee] Holder Wanted 'Reasonable Restrictions' on 'How People Interact on the Internet'

FULL TEXT BELOW:

Danny Glover notes that in the aftermath of the Columbine killings, one of then-Deputy Attorney General Eric Holder's responses was to seek government restrictions of speech on the Internet.

"The court has really struck down every government effort to try to regulate — we tried with regard to pornography. It is going to be a difficult thing, but it seems to me that if we can come up with resasonable restrictions, reasonable regulations on how people interact on the Internet that is something the Supreme Court and the courts ought to favorably look at."

I guess when you've decided the Second Amendment is optional, I guess it's easier to conclude the one right next to it is optional, too.

"Losing Rep. Dingell as the chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee does not bode well for American industries, but there is another ominous reason to fear Henry Waxman's ascent to the Chairmanship. Dingell was generally a steadfast pro-Second Amendment voice during his long tenure in the House, where he helped defeat several gun control laws proposed by his more liberal colleagues."

"Michael Barone gives us a nice summary of Dingell's pro-gun views from an account of his primary fight in 2002. The left needs to be reminded that it was Dingell, not President Bush, Wayne LaPierre, or some other fire-breathing right-winger who first coined the term 'jack-booted thugs' in reference to abuses of power by agents of the BATF. ..." ...

"The National Rifle Association has denounced the move, which has already led one Republican senator to consider legislation aimed at ensuring a president can't use an applicant's gun ownership status to deny employment."

"It's just one question on a lengthy personnel form — No. 59 on a 63-question list — but the furor over the query is a vivid reminder of the intensity of support for Second Amendment rights and signals the scrutiny Obama is likely to receive from the ever-vigilant gun lobby." ...

"One of the concerns about a Barack Obama presidency has been his stand on gun control. Specifically, many gun rights advocates worry that President Obama would push for more stringent gun control, although Sen. Obama has denied that would be the case."

"This fear is probably one of the reasons the applications for concealed weapons permits in Virginia, and in Franklin County, have increased in recent months. People apparently want to get the permit while they still have the right to do so."

Already before this, White Guard rifles, for example, have been registered with a type number instead of a manufacture number. 'For God's sake, in Finland we have many Parabellums whose serial number has been marked as 1916, 1917 or 1918, for example, because it reads so on the side of the weapon.  QUOTES TO REMEMBER
The right of the citizens to keep and bear arms has justly been considered, as the palladium of the liberties of a republic; since it offers a strong moral check against the usurpation and arbitrary power of rulers; and will generally, even if these are successful in the first instance, enable the people to resist and triumph over them. — Joseph Story, Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States; With a Preliminary Review of the Constitutional History of the Colonies and States before the Adoption of the Constitution [Boston, 1833].
