The Pentagon recently released detailed guidance that allows U.S. military personnel to carry privately owned, concealed firearms on base, a move that the Army's service chief argued against publicly.
"Arming and the Use of Force," a Nov. 18 Department of Defense directive approved by Deputy Secretary of Defense Robert Work, lays out the policy and standards that allow DoD personnel to carry firearms and employ deadly force while performing official duties.
But the lengthy document also provides detailed guidance to the services for permitting soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and Coast Guard personnel to carry privately owned firearms on DoD property, according to the document.

Administrators at Bay City Western Middle and High School told parents of students last week that they initially didn't have "any inclination" a gun had been fired after a Bay County Sheriff's deputy discharged his weapon, striking a teacher in a neighboring classroom.
The incident happened at 12:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at the school in Auburn, 500 W. Midland St. Michigan State Police officials have said Deputy Adam J. Brown was in a classroom by himself when he "negligently discharged" a gun in the building. The bullet passed through at least one wall and struck a teacher in the neck area. The projectile did not break the teacher's skin and she was uninjured, police said. |

Pledging to protect the Second Amendment is what brought millions of beleaguered American firearms owners to the polls Nov. 8 to elect Donald J. Trump as the 45th president of the United States, and one thing Trump can do to assure them that he deserves their trust would be to instruct his attorney general early in 2017 to name a special assistant whose job would be to protect Second Amendment rights. |

Currently, it is estimated there are around 14 million Americans with Right-to-Carry or carrying a concealed weapon (CCW) permits. And the number of peaceable gun carriers is even higher, as there are 10 states where no permit is required for a law-abiding citizen—who is not a prohibited person—to have a firearm discreetly tucked away. And the kind of guns carried by those who exercise their Right-to-Carry are typically small pistols easily concealed on the person. |

When Shane Cox began selling his homemade firearms and silencers out of his military surplus store, he stamped "Made in Kansas" on them to assure buyers that a Kansas law would prevent federal prosecution of anyone owning firearms made, sold and kept in the state. The 45-year-old Chanute resident also handed out copies to customers of the Second Amendment Protection Act passed in 2013 by the Kansas Legislature and signed by Gov. Sam Brownback, and even collected sales taxes. His biggest selling item was unregistered gun silencers that were flying out of the shop as fast as Cox could make them, prosecutors said later. |

Background checks indicate retail gun sales have been on a record pace for the past 18 months, and gun store owners say women are a driving force behind the surging sales. Self-defense sales boosted handgun sales during the past two-and-a-half decades, only to transition from pure self-defense to self-defense for women who find themselves in the home alone or to grandmothers who want a means to protect themselves and their grandchildren during a day at the park. |

As science and technology advance, we develop new and innovative ways of safeguarding ourselves and our loved ones. Of course, there are the obvious things, like new medicines and medical technologies (think: vaccines and bio-implants). Then there are the defensive technologies, like super-small security cameras, new sensing technologies, and exoskeletons. And then there are the offensive arms.

If nannies on the City Council have their way, you can still own guns in Baltimore, just nothing that looks like them. Council Bill 16-0761, which passed its second round of voting on Nov. 14, would ban the possession of toy or replica guns in Baltimore that could be “reasonably perceived as a firearm.” |

Most of the world’s leading countries, including the US, sometimes struggle to keep up with ammunition production. In 2013, US guns and ammunition manufacturers were running at full capacity and still couldn’t meet the demands of the government and general consumers.
