When it comes to the scholarly debate about the iconic rifle cartridges of the Cold War, the 7.62x51mm NATO (308 Winchester) and the 7.62x39 Soviet are always omnipresent in the discussion. One became a staple NATO round and the most prevalent big game hunting cartridge in North America, while the other became a symbol of pure, unadulterated ruggedness and dependability. |

If we look back through the history of concealed-carry pistol development, we’ll find those models that exemplify a just-right balance of compact size, performance and price point that set a standard for small self-defense guns of the day—that is, until the next thing comes along. One of the earliest examples of this American small-arms race is Henry Deringer’s original single-shot, muzzleloading, percussion-cap Philadelphia Deringer introduced in 1825. It was soon displaced by more convenient and reliable cartridge-firing guns, such as the double-barrel Remington Model 95 that arrived in 1866, and the early 1900s saw the advent of petite .25-cal. semi-automatics such as the FN Model 1905 and Colt 1908 Vest Pocket.

“Will, it’s for you,” my mom shouted as she pulled together yet another fantastic meal. I was occupied in my bedroom painting a 1/35-scale plastic model of a German PzKpfw V Panther tank. I was cool like that. The phone was the size of a brick and tethered to the wall. Ours was extra neat because it had buttons rather than a dial. The year was 198 and life was awesome. |
