The States in this brief include Texas, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, Utah, Virginia, and Wyoming. Wisconsin Hunter Murders Show Need For Effective Assault Weapons Ban—Armed Hunters No Match For SKS Assault Rifle

"SKS assault rifles like the one reported to have been used to murder five hunters and wound three others in Wisconsin over the weekend are a primary threat to police, the Violence Policy Center (VPC) reported today. So far in 2004, at least six law enforcement officers have been slain by SKSs. In the wake of the shooting, the VPC called on President George W. Bush today to use the Administration's executive authority over firearm imports to fully ban the import of all foreign-made assault rifles. Such an action would not require Congressional approval. The Bush Administration has specifically authorized the importation of SKS assault rifles from both Yugoslavia and Albania."

"'Armed hunters were no match for one person firing an SKS assault rifle,' said Kristen Rand, VPC legislative director. 'This sad incident illustrates why the SKS is also a leading cop-killing rifle in America today.'" ...

Submitter's Note: Actually Kristen, according to news reports only one of the hunters was armed, and was one of the first to be killed.

"You've probably heard this before: Guns don't kill people. People kill people."

"We're in lockstep with that premise. Nevertheless, we can't deny that a military weapon with rapid-fire capability sure makes it easy for people to kill lots of other people quickly, whether those victims are on the battlefield, urban streets, outside the White House or in the Wisconsin woods." ...

"People kill people, but some guns make murder too easy. The killings in northern Wisconsin suggest that the federal ban on some semiautomatics should be reinstated - and broadened - to protect both the public and police."

Police say two men who attempted to burglarize a Midvale home Friday were met by the homeowner — and his shotgun.

According to Midvale police, the men broke into the home, located near 200 East and 6900 South, just before 11:30 p.m. Friday. They were then confronted by the home's owner, who held them at bay with a shotgun until police arrived, said Sgt. Ken Jarvis. No shots were fired.

Jarvis said the men began resisting orders while standing on the home's front porch, prompting police to unleash their police dog. One man was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail, while the other was taken to a local hospital for treatment of dog bites.

The men, ages 24 and 29, are being investigated for residential burglary.

A former town police officer was sentenced to 25 years to life in state prison for shooting a man near a mall.

Kevin Griffin, a former town of Crawford officer, was convicted in October in the death of 22-year-old Timothy Ruiz. The shooting occurred outside the Galleria Mall in the town of Wallkill, 79 miles north of New York City.

Ruiz was shot in the chest by a .22-caliber rifle as he walked to his car after work in March. Griffin stalked Ruiz and fired the fatal shot from his sport-utility vehicle because he was jealous of Ruiz's friendship with his former girlfriend, who worked with Ruiz.

Griffin had been off active duty on disability leave since a patrol vehicle accident in 2001.

A temporary restraining order has been issued barring the use of a controversial Double Springs Church Road private machine gun range located near a recently built housing development.

Brittingham, the owner of a company that manufactures silencers for the Army, has been shooting high-powered rifles at the 500-yard range at 1730 Double Springs Church Road for years and has recently run into backlash from neighboring residents and the homeowners and developers of the Morgan’s Crossing housing development.

FULL TEXT BELOW:

Homicides in U.S. workplaces have fallen nearly 40% in the past decade. Even so, Oklahoma passed a law forbidding employers to ban guns from company parking lots. State legislator Jerry Ellis says law-abiding hunters should be allowed to stow firearms in their cars at work. Employees with violent intent, Ellis says, 'are not going to be stopped no matter how many laws you have.' The Whirlpool appliance company, backed by other Oklahoma businesses, is suing to keep from complying with the law, which was supposed to take effect Nov. 1. Whirlpool, which employs 1,500 workers at its Tulsa, Okla., plant, says protecting them means banning guns completely from company premises, including the parking lot. U.S. Judge Sven Erik Holmes, who hears the case this week in Tulsa, faces a balancing act-- the citizen's Second Amendment right to bear arms against the right of a private business to operate as it sees fit.

Submitter's Note: Interestingly, the Time reporter said "the citizen's Second Amendment right" and the editor didn't change it.
