"The .50-caliber rifle created by Ronnie Barrett and sold by his company, Barrett Firearms Manufacturing Inc., is the most powerful firearm civilians can buy. It weighs about 30 pounds and can hit targets up to 2,000 yards away with armor-piercing bullets."

"That kind of power has drawn a customer base of gun enthusiasts, Hollywood actors and Barrett's most loyal buyer, the U.S. military, which has been buying Barrett's rifles since the 1980s and using them in combat since the Gulf War."

"The guns are used by most civilians for hunting big game and in marksmanship competitions. Civilian sales are crucial because military and police orders can fluctuate year to year, Barrett said."

"Hundreds, possibly thousands of people are shot by police every year in Brazil, a BBC investigation has found."

"The authorities say it is mainly criminals caught in military-style raids on drug gangs but according to a former senior official, new evidence suggests that many of the shootings are cold-blooded executions conducted by the police."

-------
These are the types of people the gun banners insist must have a monopoly on force.

"You won't learn how to hunt in this class, but it may get you thinking about hunting in a different way."

"West Virginia University offers one of the few classes in the country on hunting. Topics include the evolution of hunting in society, its role in wildlife management, traditions, ethics, animal rights, gun control and economic impact."

"Nearly everyone in the class is an experienced hunter, but one of the professors who designed the course says he hopes that will change. James Anderson says he likes to present both sides of controversial issues, which is why he occasionally brings in guest speakers from organizations opposed to hunting."

"Superintendent Eugene Opperman said the policewoman and another officer, both based at Norkem Park police station, were on patrol in Piet-my-Vrou Avenue, Birch Acres, when they confronted three men walking in the road yesterday."

"Two ran away but the third man pulled out a knife and tried to stab the woman constable."

"She drew her pistol and the man continued to advance on her. She fired a shot in self-defence and critically wounded her attacker. He died on the scene shortly afterwards."

-------
It's a shame everyday citizens don't have the right to defend themselves in such a manner. Any disarmed subject attacked in this manner would have perished.

"The city of Boston, Massachusetts is looking at yet another record year for murders and shootings. This is despite the city and state having some of the toughest gun control regulations this side of DC or parts of California. And Duh Mayor is on the warpath."

"It turns out that ever since it got difficult to buy guns legally in Boston, would-be gun owners have ventured out of the city limits to get their hands on firearms. Some have even discovered that it's a hell of a lot easier to buy guns here in New Hampshire, as well as in Maine and Vermont. So they come up here, buy a couple and bring them back."

"Pennsylvania's big-game season is just around the corner. By now, every deer hunter should have his or her rifle ready for the woods. Yet, it's safe to say that dozens of local hunters will be using rifles that are strangers to them. From my years in the gun smithing business, I know for a fact this is true. I have even met hunters in the big game woods who were having some type of problem with the rifle that a cousin or hunting buddy had 'loaned' them. For the most part, the problem was quickly solved. No, there was nothing wrong with the rifle; the hunter using it was uncertain of how it functioned."

"Pick any recent shooting on the streets of Philadelphia ('Slayings this year surpass 2004 total,' Nov. 15). Now, take a closer look at the shooters. You will find they have one thing in common. Virtually every single one of them has a violent criminal history; virtually every one of them has been arrested for a crime involving the illegal possession of a gun - some of them numerous times - and virtually every one of them received mere wrist-slaps for those crimes."

"Those wrist-slaps have made Philadelphia's criminal court system into a mockery of justice, a dangerous mockery. A relatively small number of judges are causing irreparable harm by refusing to sentence violent gun-toting thugs to significant jail time. ..."

"Janalee Tobias of Women Against Gun Control (Forum, Nov. 18) is sadly misled if she really believes guns increase women's personal safety. ..."

The Journal of Trauma reported in 1998 that there are 22 criminal, suicidal and unintentional shootings for every shooting made in self-defense in America. ..."

Except for the fact that in the vast majority of self defense cases, the gun is merely brandished and never used, so comparing the criminal, suicidal and unintentional shootings to self-defense shootings is absurd. Many times the gun saves a life without being fired.
