USA Today is reporting that the holiday shopping for firearms could send the number of background checks soaring to a new record by the end of this year, possibly breaking the 27.5 million check record set in 2016, the year most people expected Hillary Rodham Clinton to win the White House.

But with Donald Trump in the White House, there has been something of a lull in gun buying. Until now, it appears.

Thanksgiving is the oldest national holiday in the United States. However, it’s observation is not a continuous presence in American history. While the celebration of Thanksgiving predates even the founding of the nation, it was proclaimed by George Washington, then ignored by Thomas Jefferson. From then on, it was sporadically observed until Abraham Lincoln, who once again introduced a National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving to the United States.

Despite California’s myriad gun control laws, none of them were able to prevent the senseless slaughter of two teenagers when a gunman opened fire on his classmates in a murderous rampage at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, Calif. on Nov. 14. Groups like the National Rifle Association have maintained for decades that gun laws restrict only those who choose to abide by them—not those who don’t.

When I started Riding Shotgun, I had no idea what it could turn in to or the journey it would be. I do remember thinking of the names in the firearm industry that I knew of, and Rob Pincus was one of the people I imagined having on the stagecoach. It’s a great honor to have him in the passenger seat. During the past year or so, I posted some interviews with others and he commented that he wanted to be on the show. When I posted that I was going to be doing shows in Phoenix at GPRC, he messaged me and asked if I had a seat for him. Of course, I do!

“They’re trying to make all of us good citizens criminals,” a Wythe County resident said about state Democrats. Wythe County residents did not bring a knife to this gunfight on Tuesday morning. “I sleep with a gun and I’ve got one on right now,” a Wythe County resident said, speaking to county supervisors at the meeting. After a few laughs and cheers, the woman flashed open her coat to reveal her gun.

The parents of a news reporter shot and killed on live television spoke out Tuesday night against the Henry County Board of Supervisors’ unanimous vote to declare the county a Second Amendment Sanctuary. Barbara and Andy Parker sat in the front row at Tuesday evening’s board meting, seemingly the only gun-control advocates in a room packed with NRA hats and hunting camo. Each wore a pin commemorating their slain daughter, Alison, aged 24; Andy’s pin simply showed Alison’s head shot, while Barbara’s depicted a hand holding a broken red heart, reading “STOP GUN VIOLENCE.”

Compensation for top officials at the National Rifle Association surged by 41 percent last year, according to a new tax filing, as the nation’s largest pro-gun organization sharply reduced spending on programs central to its mission. The jump from 2017 to 2018 for the NRA’s officers, directors and highly paid employees included a 57 percent increase for chief executive Wayne LaPierre that boosted his overall compensation to $2.15 million.

In the last decade or so, the shotgun has been largely eclipsed by semiautomatic carbines — especially the AR-15/M4 — for use by law enforcement and private citizens. Yet, even though the shotgun does not have the same CDI (“chicks dig it”) factor of the carbines, it remains the most versatile of all commonly encountered weapon platforms.

Gov. Mike Parson met with the mayors of the state’s four largest cities Monday and announced his support of gun legislation focused on juveniles, domestic abusers and prior offenders — areas which would for the most part mirror already existing federal law. In announcing his support of the measures alongside Columbia Mayor Brian Treece, Springfield Mayor Ken McClure, Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas and St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson, Parson told reporters it was part of an “immediate” response to what has been a violent year in Missouri.

What a time to be a conservative movement lawyer. Emboldened by the confirmation of Justice Brett Kavanaugh, lawyers on the right have asked the Supreme Court to push the law beyond existing boundaries on a range of issues. From immigration, abortion and the use of public funding on religious schools to gun rights and L.G.B.T. rights, conservatives are understandably hopeful the newly aligned court will hand down a wave of victories on social issues that divide the nation.

Black Friday is not just for deals on clothes and appliances. It also means big deals on guns and a backlog of background checks. But this year could break records. It is a day that draws crowds to stores across the nation and gun stores are not exempt. Joe Dezendorf, the manager of Fowler Firearms and Gun Range, said the business is preparing for plenty of customer traffic in his store on Black Friday.

As momentum for gun control stalls in Washington, the companies that dominate the US firearms industry are beginning to feel pressure from a different direction: their bottom line. Earlier this month the second-largest US gunmaker, American Outdoor Brands, announced plans to split itself in two, separating the Smith & Wesson gun unit from its outdoor products business, which sells gear such as knives, rifle scopes, and fishing equipment.

Gun sales are expected to push past the 13.8 million sold last year, in part because buyers are growing more concerned that if a Democrat is elected president in 2020, sweeping gun control will pass in Washington. Small Arms Analytics and Forecasting, a group that watches the arms industry, said today that it expects sales to reach 14 million this year.

A week after he told voters that the Second Amendment doesn’t protect “a magazine with a hundred clips in it,” 2020 Democratic Presidential Candidate Joe Biden offered supporters more of his singular brand of anti-gun nonsense. While attending a private campaign event in Seattle, the former vice president reportedly called for a ban on 9mm pistols.
