1,900 Utah National Guard members will be activated for security at the Winter Olympics, with assistance from 1,200 Guard members from 13 states.
Troops have 3 main missions: screening vehicles and visitors; perimeter guard duty; and as a rapid deployment force in case of a crisis.
The troops screening visitors at venue entrances likely won't be armed, Tarbet said. Those standing guard duty along the fences may carry guns, at the discretion of police departments at each venue. |

Trillo, who has used the weapons six times in the past year, said they give officers another alternative when faced with life-threatening situations.
But "despite the pluses, some officers might use the less-than-lethal weaponry too often or unnecessarily," according to Christopher Slobogin, a criminal law professor at the University of Florida College of Law. |

The latest victim of victimless crime laws: Gerard Warren parked his Chevrolet Suburban in the Strip District. When police searched it, they found a Glock .45 locked in the center console.
