An Iraq War veteran and mother of two has been arrested in New York City after bringing her children to visit the children’s father, her estranged husband. I have been able to verify the arrest, booking, and eventual release of the woman, Deanna Jo Robinson, and there is a funding campaign for her legal expenses. According to reports, her ex-husband received the children, then called the police on the assumption that Robinson had a handgun somewhere in her possession. Officers found a weapon in her vehicle. |

There are countless tales of armed citizenry stopping homicides, rapes, or robberies by using their guns. That behavior should be respected and rewarded. Don’t turn other potential sheepdogs into sheep because you fear the wolf.
The most logical thought is to prepare more sheepdogs for when the wolf appears, because he eventually will. That is one fact that cannot be argued. |

The Supreme Court has turned away an appeal from Maryland gun owners who challenged the state's assault weapons ban. The justices left in place a federal appeals court ruling that upheld the Maryland law that does not permit the sale of a range of semiautomatic weapons and large-capacity magazines. The banned guns include those that were used in recent mass shootings in a south Texas church and at an outdoor concert in Las Vegas.

There's no doubt America is obsessed with guns. It's evident by the jarring 300 million firearms available in the nation, but where does the infatuation come from? Two researchers recently found that when examining men who are going through financial problems, many of their passionate views about firearms derive from a sense of "empowerment"—and they feel stricter gun laws are an attack on their masculinity.

Two men huddled in the bush on the West Berlin side of the notorious “Anti-Fascist Protection Wall.” They intently scanned the East German Border Guard tower opposite them, about 50 meters across the so-called “Death Strip.” The strip was not mined—it was just a wide open area of carefully manicured sand that was covered by the guards’ machine guns, mostly the East German version of the Soviet AKM assault rifle, the MPi-KM.

A stolen firearm is every gun owner’s worst nightmare. If you don’t have insurance on it, you’ll be out whatever the gun was worth. Even if you do, it’s still a huge inconvenience, and you could be looking at potential legal problems if your gun gets used in a crime and you didn’t notice it was stolen. Unfortunately, gun theft from both homes and vehicles has been getting more and more common. In 2016, there were over 237,000 reports of stolen guns, which is 68 percent higher than the number of reported stolen guns in 2005. And quite often those stolen guns end up used in violent crimes.

The State of Illinois’ first firearm deer season was Nov. 17 – 19. Although hunters have different motives for engaging in the outdoor sport, they all have one thing in mind, to shoot and kill a deer. Brandon Weidner, 21, of Waggoner, Ill., shot and killed a 10-point buck, his biggest deer yet, on the last day of the state’s first hunting season.

I am not sure how much experience is enough when testing a new rifle, but I think I crossed the threshold with this one. I carried the Remington Model 700 American Wilderness Rifle (AWR) in float planes, boats, trucks, swamp buggies and on my shoulder for more miles than I care to think about. I used it in constant rain, high humidity and at the extremes of this continent. I hunted with the rifle for two weeks during a 10-day grizzly hunt in Alaska. You read that right; we were “weather stuck” for four extra days. The outfitter promised heated and dry tents, but he lied. Instead we had tiny tents with no heat and no place to hang wet gear. |

State legislatures are taking steps on their own to ban or restrict access to bump stocks, after several of them were found at the scene of the Oct. 1 Las Vegas shooting, and were believed to have helped the gunman, Stephen Paddock, effectively turn his semi-automatic weapons into automatic weapons. After the shooting, Republicans and Democrats in Washington both talked about tougher federal regulations to restrict access to the devices, which use the recoil action of a semi-automatic weapon to make it fire more rapidly, at the pace of an automatic. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
Some of the worst abuses of government force in recent years were precipitated by technical and victimless gun-law violations. For example, the BATF claimed that the Branch Davidians possessed machine guns without paying the required federal tax and filling in the proper registration forms. So a tax case worth less than $10,000 led to a 76-man helicopter, machine gun, and grenade assault on a home in which 2/3 of the occupants were women and children. — Dave Kopel and Dr. Michael S.
