... "Years later, I would pass the gun bug on to my wife. She was terrified of guns until I put her through a little systematic desensitization ... that culminated in a trip to the gun range. First, I had her pass an empty gun case to me. Next, I had her pass a gun case with a .22 packed inside. ... Then, finally, I asked her to take out the unloaded Ruger Mark II and hand it to me."

"Shortly after she started to handle firearms ... my wife was ready for a trip to the gun range with that little Ruger, an empty Coke can, and a box of Remington .22 Subsonics. Although she pretended she wasn’t having the time of her life, my wife soon begged me to take her back out to the shooting range. ..." ...

"Are you a firearms instructor? If you've ever been on the range and given someone a five-minute instruction on shooting, you're an instructor. If you're not currently an instructor but would like to help someone overcome their fear of firearms, then you're an instructor-in-waiting."

"As gun owners, we have a responsibility not only to learn the proper use of our firearms, but also to ensure that adequate training is available to people who need it. If you go to any gun store, gun show, or shooting range, you'll find that there are far more men than women. The firearms industry is very much male-dominated. And that's okay." ...

"The New York Times editorial titled 'Confusion on Guns,' reprinted by the Enquirer (Nov. 23), is an example of arrogance or ignorance, neither of which stands that shrinking media behemoth in good stead. The paper asserts that 'America's confusion about the Second Amendment is now nearly total. An amendment that ensures a collective right to bear arms has been misread in one legislature after another.'"

"While there is an ongoing debate about the Second Amendment, and volumes written on the subject, it is disingenuous in the extreme to make this assertion as if the New York Times were the final arbiter on the matter, or that this opinion represented settled law and fact." ...

"Americans are criticized as being excessive and wasteful. There may be some truth to that when it comes to firearms."

"How many old-timers can you remember who had one shotgun, one rifle and maybe a .22 rifle and/or pistol? They claimed they could hunt any game in the state with two guns."

"Now, it seems that many have fine-tuned their arsenal for just about every hunting scenario. Guns, if taken care of, won't wear out, will increase in value and will outlive their owners. Our fixation with guns is about the same as our wives' love of diamonds; we all have more than what we need but not as many as we want." ...

Submitter's Note: Of course no anti-diamond lobby is pushing to ban all square cut 'assault' diamonds, nor all diamonds over 1.5 carats (who 'needs' a diamond that big), nor cheap 'Saturday Date Night Special' diamond chip earrings, etc..

"I happened to find out how good Henry rifles are at a writers' get-together. After the morning info, we had lunch and then went out to the ranges. I found myself on the 200-meter rifle range with Dave Fortier, a pair of Henry Big Boy rifles in .44 Magnum and a carton of Magtech 240 jacketed softpoint."

"Quite frankly, I was not expecting much. We were there by ourselves, I guess because the others weren't expecting much either. We loaded the rifles, anticipating a little plinking. Within the first tubeful of ammo, we had broken every single clay pigeon scattered across the hundred-yard berm. Reloading and sifting to the 150 berm, we found ourselves with all the birds busted ... Those Henrys were accurate." ...

The confrontation came shortly after 11 p.m. Monday. Police said one, and possibly two, people broke into the home by kicking in a side door from inside the garage.

The homeowner, who had been asleep on the second floor, apparently grabbed a rifle and shot a man who came into his bedroom with a flashlight. The man was dead at the scene.

Neither man was immediately identified.

FULL TEXT BELOW:

Three men stole a hunter's doe at gunpoint, the hunter said.

"I'm really, really upset about the whole ordeal," said Robert Hanna, 42, of Meadville. "(It's) over a dumb deer. If they wanted it so bad I would have said, 'Take it.'"

Hanna said he shot the deer on Monday afternoon and was getting ready to come down from his tree stand when he was approached by three men with rifles. They ordered him to empty his rifle and throw his gun down and one of the men then knocked him to the ground, he said.

"It's an armed robbery and an assault," said Vernon Township Sgt. Randy Detzel. "They knocked him to the ground and took his deer."

Police had no suspects.
