"Teddy bear manufacturers face more regulation than companies that make firearms," state lawmakers were told yesterday as they launched a study on how to keep children safe from guns.

The committee study is being conducted at the request of Brooks, who was unsuccessful in earlier efforts to pass legislation that would have required all firearms sold in Tennessee to be equipped with so-called "smart gun" technology so they could be fired only by the person designated to do so.

A federal grand jury filed an indictment Thursday against the owners of a Royal Oak gun shop. The owners allegedly bought the guns overseas and then added adapters to the guns, making them "even more dangerous." Agents searched the Reid's store on Thursday and charged them both with one count of unlawful possession and transfer of assault weapons.

Leaders of gun control groups from Illinois and 15 other states today called on the nation's newspapers to stop carrying classified advertisements for guns, saying such ads let criminals obtain firearms without undergoing federally mandated background checks.

"Criminals will always be able to obtain handguns, but newspapers shouldn't be making it easy for them," said Thom Mannard, executive director of the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence.

"After a five-year, wide-ranging probe into municipal corruption by federal agents, a grand jury Wednesday indicted Bridgeport Mayor Joseph P. Ganim on 24 felony charges, including racketeering, bribery, extortion, mail fraud and tax evasion." Ganim initiated one of the municipal lawsuits against gun makers, which was recently thrown out of court.

The House passed aviation security legislation Thursday after rejecting a Senate version that would have turned airport screening operations over to federal employees. The vote was a major victory for the White House and its Republican allies. GOP conservatives strongly resisted the formation of a new federal work force of some 28,000 people.

LA MARQUE Bridget Jones used to feel safe about leaving her children at home alone in between the time she left for work in the evening and her husband came home from his job.

Things have changed: Last Wednesday, the Joneses house was shot up.

The police are conducting an investigation and patrol cars are watching Jones neighborhood on a more regular basis.

The hunting season for white-tailed deer begins today in Texas, and from now until Jan. 6, it will sometimes seem as if the hunters are as much at risk as the deer. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department says that accidents can be avoided if hunters follow some basic safety tips.

There's an old saying, "A conservative is a liberal who's been mugged." Now I guess we can add, "A gun-owner is a liberal who's worried about terrorists."

It's a silver lining to a dark cloud, isn't it, this sudden collapse of the anti-gun movement?

In the halls of Congress and the State House, they used to debate: "Should we ban assault weapons?" Now the more pressing question is: "Do I buy a revolver or an automatic?"

As early as next month, the City Council could decide to take a look at banning gun shows and restricting the sale of guns near city schools. Councilman Rafi Manoukian is targeting gun shows that take place at the Glendale Civic Auditorium, which is across the street from Glendale Community College.
