When Ramon Acevedo, a custodian at the University of Minnesota had finished his shift early Thursday morning, two teenagers approached him near Smith Hall.
According to Acevedo, he was walking toward his moped, and the teenagers asked if it was his.
When Acevedo said yes, one of the would-be thieves pulled out a knife and said, “This scooter’s mine now.”
...
The University of Minnesota Police Department recommends compliance in situations like these, but that self defense is allowed, Sgt. Erik Stenemann said, even though fighting back can be dangerous.

In Tuesday's presidential election, I know who I "should" vote for.
...
So, ticking off issues on my list, I should vote Libertarian, as usual.
...
I have only one marginally effective way to tell those who have spent the past three months libeling and trashing Sarah Palin -- and with her, every "regular American" who owns a gun or goes to church and lives outside their oh-so-correct urban enclaves of Washington, New York, Atlanta and Los Angeles -- where to shove it. And that's to vote against the communist sympathizer who would make legally owned self-defense weapons as rare as whooping cranes, and for a true American hero -- to vote a Republican presidential ticket for the first time in my life. |

On the Second Amendment, the presidential election presents a stark choice.
John McCain has a very good, although not perfect, record on the Second Amendment. Barack Obama has a nearly perfect anti-gun record, and he is, appropriately, endorsed by the Brady Campaign. Yet the Obama campaign has the audacity to hope that it can deceive voters about Obama's record.
John McCain has forthrightly told gun rights advocates when he disagrees with them. Back in 2000, he appeared in Colorado commercials supporting an initiative that imposed special restrictions on gun shows. With Sen. Joe Lieberman, McCain sponsored an even worse federal anti-gun-show bill. |

An armed man who allegedly forced his way into the home of a married couple is dead after he was fatally shot in what officials are saying was self defense, police said Sunday.
Modesto police officials said they think the suspect who was fatally shot had a previous relationship with the remarried woman who lived at the home, which was located in the 1500 block of Victor Way.
The man who was found dead at the scene was arrested in March after he allegedly made criminal threats against the woman injured in Sunday's altercation. He also allegedly vandalized her car, police said. |

"If these guys really have the numbers then let them demonstrate it with Peaceful Political Action. Taking violent action without first "firing a shot across the bow" with some sort of Peaceful (or at least non-lethal, minimally destructive) Show of Force is a sucker's play all the way around and without that Peaceful Show of Force, why would anyone take them seriously. If they won't stand up and be counted in peace, how can anyone trust that they will stand firm when bullets are flying?" |

You know, these are not words or concepts to be modified by "more carefully chosen words" or whose intent can be "misconstrued." He is quite directly saying that almost no American gunowners will resist confiscation and if we did so we would be wrong to fight. Have I missed something here? Is his real message or "real resistance" somehow subliminally encoded in such defeatism?
If I have. . ."contrary assumptions," it is because I believed his own words which are clear and unequivocal.
Knox also must understand that such words are more eagerly read in the homes and offices of our enemies who seek to strip us of our rights. What effect does he think that defeatism will have on our enemies? It is sweet music to their ears. |

Knox the Younger has responded to my Open Letter and in the process has missed both the point and the boat.
The first sentence of his counterpoint deliberately mischaracterizes the reality we face. I say deliberately because he is otherwise a reasonably intelligent chip off the old Knox. (And I daresay that if his daddy ain't rolling over in his grave, he is at least restive at his son's latest foray.)
Sez KtY: "As expected, and intended, my latest Knox Report column has upset some in the, 'All is lost; let's start a shooting war' camp. It is mind boggling to me that intelligent people could be so short sighted and misguided as to think that killing people and blowing things up is somehow going to make things better for our grandchildren."

Livingston County Democrats are angry after receiving local and national newspapers wrapped in plastic bags that claim Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is a threat to freedom. The ads were on plastic wrappers distributed Friday to customers of the Livingston County Daily Press and Argus, but were also in a small number of copies of the Wall Street Journal and other national and regional newspapers that Press and Argus carriers distribute. |

An ex-convict who thought he was being robbed gunned down a 12-year-old trick-or-treater, spraying nearly 30 rounds with an assault rifle from inside his home after hearing a knock on the door, police said Saturday.
Police said they also charged a 19-year-old in his home with obstruction of justice when she was caught trying to run away after the shooting with $7,500 in cash. [Police] did not give an explanation for the money.

The National Rifle Association, which had to kill plans to run anti-Barack Obama ads on Election Day because newspapers declined to run them, found a home for its ads today. Two days before Tuesday's historic election, the NRA is running full-page ads in some Virginia newspapers listing eight reasons to vote against the Democratic pesidential nominee under the banner "Can Obama be Trusted to Protect Your Gun Rights? You Decide." The NRA contacted some newspapers in Virginia and other battleground states about wrapping their newspapers Tuesday in plastic bags that would read: "Vote for Freedom... Defeat Obama." Two of the state's biggest newspapers, the Virginian-Pilot and Richmond Times-Dispatch, declined the ads. |

An intended rape victim shot and killed her attacker this morning in Cape Girardeau when he broke into her home to rape her a second time, police said.
The 57-year-old woman shot Ronnie W. Preyer, 47, a registered sex offender, in the chest with a shotgun when he broke through her locked basement door.
The woman told police he was the same man who raped her several days earlier. Officials do not intend to seek charges against her.
In the first incident, the woman heard glass breaking in her basement about midnight on Saturday. She went to leave the house, and the man attacked when she opened the front door. He punched her in the face and then forced her into a bedroom, where he raped her, said H. Morley Swingle, prosecuting attorney in Cape Girardeau County.

I am accustomed to receiving large volumes of political junk mail and like everyone else, am barraged with radio and television campaign ads. I tend to ignore the vast majority of it since it rarely presents the complete truth or facts on an issue or candidate. I recently received a mailing from the Ohio Democratic Party that was so ridiculous that I felt compelled to comment. Before I go any further, I would point out that I am and always have been an Independent voter. The mailing stated that both John McCain and Barack Obama support Second Amendment rights, both would stop the government from confiscating guns during an emergency and both support last summer's Supreme Court decision, District of Columbus vs. Heller. In a word, hogwash. |

Well, fellow sportsmen and women, another four years have come and gone, and in just a few days we will elect a new president. For those of us who care about Second Amendment gun rights - and that should be every citizen - I think we can all agree we've had a great eight years under George W. Bush, at least on the issue of gun ownership. |

My son and I are hunting -- and exercising our Second Amendment right "to keep and bear arms." We will be back home in time to vote in hopes that this "right of the people" won't be "infringed." But I wonder. The extraordinary dedication, commitment and tenacity of American men and women in uniform serving the cause of freedom inspires me. Their bravery and perseverance on battlefields around the world should remind us all that freedom is fragile and must be defended to flourish. The Bill of Rights -- including the Second Amendment -- did not come to us gratis or without obligation.

WHAT IS THE NEWSPAPER LOOPHOLE?
The unregulated sale of firearms by unlicensed sellers through classified ads in newspapers allows felons, domestic abusers, minors, and other persons who are prohibited by law from possessing firearms to buy guns without a criminal background check. We call this the “newspaper loophole.” |

GALLIA COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ)--Taking the law into your own hands. That's what a local homeowner did when he caught a thief breaking into his storage shed. Armed with his shotgun, one shot was all it took and the burglary came to an abrupt end.

Though I was never around them, guns were a part of life where I grew up, Washington, D.C. But because of a handgun ban, the only folks who had them were cops and criminals, until the rule was reversed by the Supreme Court earlier this year.
I'd fired the gun — in class. But if my paper assailant was flesh and blood could I do the same thing? Could I defend my own life?
Then I thought about Nefertiti Williams. She had been murdered in her own home by a roommate after everyone else had left for the holiday.
So I started researching the process of obtaining a concealed weapons permit and purchasing a gun. It's not hard, but it takes time. You have to really want it.

We already know that Barack Obama does not believe in the First Amendment. He does not support freedom of the press—he has tried to shut it down. He does not believe in freedom of religion—all his friends and many advisers believe that Israel is the problem of war in the middle east.
Now we know he does not support the Second Amendment, the right to self defense. while his allies in Congress and the State legislatures are cutting money from law enforcement, trying to release tens of thousands of criminals from prison early, BO wants to assure the criminals you are defenseless.
Your very life, not just your money and freedoms, are at stake on Tuesday. Your choice, freedom or Obama.
