The woman walked through the open doors holding the hard plastic case away from her body, as if rattlesnakes might burst from its seams at any moment. She set the offending case on a table at the introductory shooting class and stepped back.

"Let's see what you have in there," I said to her.

She gave me the "are you talking to me" look, and I nodded. Opening the case revealed a large-frame, 6-inch-barrel, double-action revolver chambered for the .44 Remington Magnum cartridge.

Seeing that the pistol had been fired a fair amount and expecting her answer, I asked, "Have you shot this gun a lot?"

"I've never shot it," she replied.

Philippines: Philippines' Duterte rails at U.S. 'monkeys' for halting gun sale

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte chided the United States on Wednesday for halting the planned sale of 26,000 rifles to his country, calling those behind the decision "fools" and "monkeys" and indicating he might turn to Russia and China instead.
Duterte's tirades against the former colonial power are routine during his speeches and he said on Wednesday he once believed in Washington, but had since lost respect for what is the Philippines' biggest ally.
The U.S. State Department halted the sale of the assault rifles to the Philippine police after staff from U.S. Senator Ben Cardin's office said he would oppose it, Senate aides told Reuters on Monday.

Former Suffolk police chief James Burke was sentenced to 46 months in prison Wednesday for beating a man who stole a duffel bag from his police-issued vehicle and orchestrating an elaborate scheme to conceal the crime.

Burke acted “as a dictator” in a cover-up conspiracy that “affected a whole police department,” U.S. District Judge Leonard Wexler said in imposing the sentence.

“He corrupted a system, not on one act, but for three years,” Wexler said.

I think I’ve mentioned before that many of the most dangerous people I know are grandparents, tempered by decades of military and or law enforcement service, and honed to a razor’s edge by a lifetime of fighting. They don’t necessarily look fast, but they have eliminated all wasted motion and hesitation.

I get the strong impression that the St. Louis senior targeted by a pair of teenaged thugs from Florissant and Ferguson was forged in that same fire.

For the second time in just over a year, the state Supreme Court has rebuked the East Providence police for improperly denying residents licenses to carry concealed weapons.

The high court recently issued an order faulting Chief Christopher J. Parella for failing to abide by the court's previous directive.

The court in April 2015 ordered the city to back up any denial of a license to carry a concealed weapon with findings of fact. It also said at that time that the city was incorrectly applying the law by requiring that applicants demonstrate a "a proper and true need" to carry.

But McLaughlin and his friends are likely to be disappointed on Nov. 8. Voters in Maine and in Nevada are poised to approve background checks for almost all private sales and transfers of guns. The ballot initiatives seek to close a loophole in federal law that exempts private sales such as those online or at gun shows from comprehensive checks.

And in California and Washington, which have already closed the loophole, voters are being asked to take gun control a step further. Washington will vote on whether to allow family members to seek a temporary order barring a person from having a gun if the person is determined to pose a risk to themselves or others.

How Hillary Uses Toddlers As Human Shields

Civilized societies find the practice of hiding behind human shields to be despicable. When those humans are children, we struggle to find language strong enough to express the full measure of our revulsion.

What are we to make, then, of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton when she hides behind “toddlers” to explain her opposition to the Supreme Court’s historic Heller decision?

Of course, Heller is the seminal 2008 Supreme Court decision confirming that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to keep and bear arms. While efforts to regulate that right into oblivion persist, no reasonable person on either side of the issue disputes that this is the fundamental meaning of Heller.

KS: Voters to decide if hunting to be consitutional right

Ryan Flaming supports a constitutional amendment question appearing on the ballot in the general election. That's really not unexpected, as Flaming is an avid hunter.

“I like the idea,” Flaming said. “A lot of people hunt to feed their families, and I do not think people know that. … Hunting is an important part of how some people in Kansas survive.”

Constitutional Amendment 1 would add a new section to the state's Bill of Rights to explicitly preserve hunting and fishing. Any future measures seeking to limit hunting or fishing would need proof a particular animal could become endangered. If approved by voters, the measure would make the state among roughly 20 in which hunting and fishing are a constitutional right.

NY: Trump to boost economy, protect 2nd Amendment

Trump tells it as it is and is not afraid. He is a man smart enough to get the economy moving in the right direction. He will ensure the middle class and the poor of a decent living again. He will bring back jobs from overseas.

He is right about “rigged” elections, according to Judicial Watch. Many noncitizens are registered voters and vote in the election. This will not happen if he is president. Voter ID is very important, and the states that have it have increased their voting.

Trump will protect our Second Amendment, where Hillary Clinton will destroy it. We need change in government policies, and he is the only one who can do it. He has proven himself as a businessman. We need Trump as president.

Judge Kozinski is known for his principled defenses of the First Amendment, the Second Amendment, limited federal powers, and the due process rights of criminal defendants. "I disagree with the liberals on the bench half of the time," he told Reason in 2006, "and the conservatives the other half."

For the most part, concealed-carry guns are tiny self-defense weapons that are, well, easily concealed. With concealed-carry pistols and revolvers making up the lion’s share of today’s handgun market, it should come as no surprise to veteran and newbie shooters alike that the market for inside-the-waistband (IWB) and outside-the-waistband (OWB) holsters has also gone ballistic.

If you’ve followed my column for a while, then you know that even though the concealed-carry market overflows with a multitude of excellent quality holsters, I have an unapologetic preference for the synthetic and leather hybrid holsters churned out by the folks at Alien Gear Holsters in Post Falls.

What if you had to choose to live with only one handgun?

This handgun would have to fill the roles of self-defense and hunting. Obviously, this is a very personal choice and is dependent upon a number of conditions which will be discussed below.

I am also not out to start a “handgun selection war” with the readers. However, if by choice, financial reasons, or because of political and legal and decisions you or I were ever forced to choose just one handgun it begs thoughtful discussion. Here are my thoughts for just one handgun.

On Tuesday, Nov. 8, your hunting and self-defense rights will be at stake. If Hillary Clinton wins the election, she and the gun control people will immediately start to work on ways to disarm the American public.

I recently talked to a fellow who supports Clinton and he advised me not to worry. He is a firearms owner. While he agrees that she will try to put excessive gun control laws on the books, he said that the Senate and House would not let her.

In reality, that depends on how many pro-gun folks remain on those floors after election. In addition, if she appoints another Supreme Court Justice that is anti-gun, we could lose our rights that way. It was very close the last time. Some want to abolish the Second Amendment.

A security contractor who was given the job last week to take pictures of damaged pipeline equipment near Standing Rock, North Dakota, pulled a gun as he was approached by protesters, some of whom were armed with knives.

Kyle Thompson, who never fired a single shot, will not face charges, as authorities determined he acted in self-defense after his truck was run off of the road and set on fire.

David Trahan of the Sportsman's Alliance of Maine has risen in opposition. He is fearful that the new law would create pitfalls for hunters and shooters. Their interpretation of the law would make it illegal to loan a firearm outside the family. A friend could not loan a long time friend a hunting rifle without going to a gun dealer, filling out a background check and paying a fee of about $30. When the gun was returned, the same process would have to be followed.

Trahan is rallying sportsmen and sport shooters in an attempt to defeat Question 3. Spending on the "Yes" side of the Question is Bloomberg driven and amounts to more than four million dollars.

The latest salvo in the fight to defend Republican U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt’s seat from a challenge by Democrat Missouri Secretary of State Jason Kander has been fired by the National Rifle Association.

Kander, who drew national attention and celebrity status among gun control advocates by assembling a field-stripped AR-15 while blindfolded and voicing support for expanding background checks for those on terror watch lists, has been the subject of a series of ads in response by the gun rights group since then.

All of this leads up to the one burning question that the media and politicians just can’t seem to wrap their heads around: In this age of “lone wolf,” random terrorist attacks and pervasive threats, why do some in our society demand that millions of competent gun owners, who safely and responsibly carry every day, disarm when shopping, sipping coffee or watching a movie?

So-called “Gun-Free Zones” don’t prevent violence, they only reduce the likelihood that a hero will be equipped to stop the violence when it starts.

Well, this is it. The final column before the Tuesday that will define the direction America takes into the future for decades to come.

Will the nation veer sharp left next week or will sanity prevail? The ramifications are enormous.

As freedom loving gun owners, the decision we make on Tuesday will reach deep into our lives, for the rest of our lives. That decision must be the right one.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
[The American Colonies were] all democratic governments, where the power is in the hands of the people and where there is not the least difficulty or jealousy about putting arms into the hands of every man in the country. [European countries should not] be ignorant of the strength and the force of such a form of government and how strenuously and almost wonderfully people living under one have sometimes exerted themselves in defence of their rights and liberties and how fatally it has ended with many a man and many a state who have entered into quarrels, wars and contests with them. — George Mason, "Remarks on Annual Elections for the Fairfax Independent Company" in The Papers of George Mason, 1725-1792, ed Robert A. Rutland (Chapel Hill, 1970).
