"The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA) today condemned New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Dr. Robert Kurtz, director of service for Trauma and Surgical Care at Kings County Hospital for attempting to capitalize on the slaying of a highly decorated New York police officer to push their anti-gun political agenda."

"'New York City has some of the toughest gun laws in the nation, where honest citizens find it incredibly difficult to purchase and own firearms,' said CCRKBA Executive Director Joe Waldron. 'New York's complaints about gun trafficking from other states led to one-gun-a-month laws in those states, yet the mayor still contends that there are too many guns. ..." ...

"According to a printout from a computer controlled by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Department of Justice, I am an enemy of the state."

"The printout ... contains more than 100 pages documenting what the Bureau and the Bush Administration consider to be my threats to the security of the United States of America."

"Although the file finds no criminal activity by me or members of my immediate family, it remains open because I am a 'person of interest' who has 'written and promoted opinions that are contrary to the government of the United States of America.'" ...

"... They know I belong to the National Rifle Association ... and the file notes that my 'pattern of spending' shows no purchase of 'alcohol-related products' since the file was opened in 2001." ...

"A few weeks ago, in another venue, I wrote that confiscation of weapons should be tried on the police first: if it works there, then we’ll talk about it."

"As unlikely as it sounded, it seems that some states have adopted my advice. Let’s look at it."

"Rhode Island and Police Departments nationwide are cutting back on their policy of 'Always armed, always a policeman.'"

"I was serious when I made my statement to disarm police, because we can anticipate the ultimate outcome. This is because I prefer my Law Enforcement being with us, identifying with our realities, not being against us and out of touch with our realities as their administrators are." ...

"This month President Bush was faced with a seemingly easy choice — whether to protect the innocent victims of gun violence or the firearms industry. Rather than making our streets safer, the president chose to shield the irresponsible manufacturers and dealers who supply guns to criminals."

The recently enacted Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act gives the gun industry unprecedented immunity from civil lawsuits. This law, which amounts to a gift to the gun industry while asking for nothing in exchange, is also a tragic reversal from the breakthrough Safe Gun Agreement the federal government reached with the industry just several years ago." ...

"Consumers of self-defense handguns have always suffered on the horns of a dilemma. On the one side is the need for a small, lightweight, easy-to-carry-and-conceal sidearm, and on the other side is the need for a powerful, decisive cartridge."

"The problem being, if the gun was small and easy to conceal and carry, it was usually offered only in a midbore or smaller caliber. That meant it was less effective than the larger and heavier bigbore alternative."

"Those opting for the bigbore-diameter alternative were forced to choose either a large pistol that was difficult to conceal and carry for long hours or a radically reduced version of the first ..." ...

FULL TEXT BELOW:

A state drug agent on trial for killing an unarmed San Jose man will face more grilling on the witness stand Tuesday.

Michael Walker has been testifying for three days, explaining how and why he shot Rudy Cardenas in the back last year.

The prosecutor pointed out discrepancies in what Walker is saying now and what he told a grand jury last summer.

Waler says he fired in self-defense because he believed Cardenas had a gun.

Family members say Cardenas didn't pose any threat.

Walker shot Cardenas, who Walker believed was a dangerous fugitive.

If convicted of voluntary manslaughter, Walker could get 10 years in prison.

Despite tremendous advances by local antiviolence programs like CeaseFire and Crime Stoppers, pro-gun lobbyists continue to undermine their efforts by working to make it easier for criminals to get guns."
