Over the last year, like many other people in the USA and the rest of the world, I was appalled by the riots in Ferguson and Baltimore, by the Charleston Church shooting, by the death sentence in the Boston Marathon bomber case, and also by the opinion, expressed by the Governor of South Carolina, that the morally right response to the Charleston Church shooting is the death penalty for the killer. |

Several years ago, just before the opening of deer season, I wrote a column inspired by a pair of local women who had concerns for their safety during deer season. The sporadic gunfire made them wary of walking outdoors during the firearms season. |

In August 2012, police responded to a call for a 15-year-old boy armed with a handgun and threatening to hurt himself and others in his Pearl Hill Road home.
The six responding officers were able to calm the situation, and though they were positioned outside the home with pepper spray and ballistic shields, they did not need to use them. |

It seemed like such a great idea at the time.
A nationally respected engineering university in downtown Newark set out to design a safer gun with high-tech electronic locks to prevent it from being fired by a thief or a child who found it accidentally. In Trenton, the governor even signed a law ordering New Jersey’s firearms dealers to sell only so-called smart guns once the first one hit the market. |

The Ohio House of Representatives, in the name of Second Amendment rights, continues to chip away at the limited restrictions on concealed-carry gun laws. Its approval of House Bill 48 now could open the door for individuals with gun licenses to carry weapons into day care centers, airports and police stations. |

With hunting season beginning Monday, hunters are taking advantage of the deer sight-in event at Zanesville Rifle Club this weekend.
The deer sight-in happens every year when the club range in Blue Rock State Forest is open to the public for free to give hunters a chance to make sure their guns are sighted correctly and in good working order before the gun season starts. |

Maine’s muzzleloader season, which begins Monday, offers unsuccessful deer hunters one last chance at securing some venison. While some folks, unexpectedly finding themselves with an unfilled tag, will be dashing off to the local sporting goods store in search of a new front-end loader and all the truck that goes with it, the slightly more prepared ones will be dusting their as yet unused smoke pole and rifling through drawers for the various and sundry components. |

As Kansas moves toward a time when guns will be as welcome on university campuses as laptops, students are starting to take notice and talk about how they’ll handle that day when it comes. For many, it’s no big deal. For students who grew up in a largely rural state, surrounded by guns, having the student at the next desk carrying one in pocket or purse doesn’t feel particularly unfamiliar or uncomfortable. Others are predicting disaster when any student or employee over 21 can carry concealed on campus, without a permit or training in how and when to deploy a deadly weapon.

Arizona’s Pinal County Sheriff’s Office is about to become the first law enforcement agency in the nation to deploy a new weapon with the hopes of preventing police involved shooting deaths.
In addition to traditional handguns and Tasers, the sheriff’s office is adding a third weapon to its deputies’ duty belts, a “less-lethal” handgun that can be used as an alternative to real bullets.
