Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine said Monday he was saddened by the “senseless act of gun violence” at Ohio State University, even though the attacker used a butcher knife and a car. Mr. Kaine, who ran on the 2016 Democratic ticket with presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, was accused of pushing a gun-control agenda after his Twitter post blaming firearms for the siege. Eleven people were injured in a rampage by Somali-born student Abdul Razak Ali Artan, who drove into a crowd on a sidewalk and then chased bystanders with a knife in what is being investigated as a possible act of terrorism. He was shot and killed by Ohio State Police Officer Alan Horujko.

President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday suggested on social media that burning the American flag should be a criminal offense, reigniting a First Amendment fight that’s already played out in Congress and before the Supreme Court. In a tweet sent at 6:55 a.m., the incoming 45th chief executive suggested that a constitutional amendment or law punishing those who burn Old Glory could be wedged into an agenda already crowded with an envisioned infrastructure plan, tax code changes, an immigration overhaul and the repeal of the 2010 health care law. |

What good are gun-free signs on doors to a giant mall if people carrying guns can enter through anchor stores where there are no signs? That's the question posed Monday by Northbrook gun control advocate Lee Goodman, who said that patrons can "sneak guns into Northbrook Court" through anchors Neiman Marcus, Macy's and Lord & Taylor, as well as some mall restaurants. He said the mall should put up signs leading from those anchors into the interior of the mall, or pressure the anchors and eateries to put up signs, too.

A mob of brazen burglars stole dozens of weapons from a Tampa gun shop Tuesday morning, after breaking in by driving through the front of the store. Surveillance cameras inside Tampa Arms Co. recorded the crime at about 3 a.m. The video shows a truck driving into the front of the business and, moments later, a swarm of thieves -- wearing masks and dressed alike -- running into the store, stealing about 40 weapons and taking off. |

It’s tempting to paint the 35,000-member NYPD with a broad ideological brush. While it’s fair to say that most officers probably do line up right of center, I’m always reminded of the cop I met for beers a decade ago who thought that President George W. Bush ought to be tried as a war criminal for the invasion of Iraq. In a department that’s larger than most towns in New York, there’s room for divergent opinions. |

When Gun for Hire at Woodland Park Range opened three years ago, Thomas O’Beirne and Anthony Colandro were envisioning a family-friendly destination for using firearms. Individuals would visit the range on McBride Avenue to shoot for sport, but so would groups celebrating birthdays. Girl Scouts would sell cookies in the lobby, and Boy Scouts would sell popcorn. Members of the West Paterson Fire Department hawked 50/50 raffle tickets.

Lately, our society has been plagued by words and phrases that, while seemingly common, often cause confusion or frustration, even leading to occasional gunfire. Of course, I am talking about “single-stage” and “two-stage” rifle triggers and the difficulty in deciding between them. For much of firearms history, trigger selection was like riding an amusement park monorail—we were along for the ride on a course we did not plot: “Next stop, crappy Mil-Spec with 12-pound pull weight and 10 pounds of grit.”
