Michael Bloomberg's Megalomania

Since then Bloomberg has upped his expenditures, reaching a total of $71,176,294 during three election cycles, including donations to PR firm SKDKnickerbocker, whose agenda is to make gun control seem more attractive to voters. Following the shooting in Las Vegas, he promised to match every donation made to Everytown. Bloomberg’s success has been limited, however. Washington Monthly columnist Isabelle Ross, upset by that reality, nonetheless explains why, noting that Everytown, et al. “are fighting battles for specific policy changes, while the NRA has leveraged gun rights into a pugilistic fight for cultural dominance, propped up by the twin pillars of ‘protection’ and ‘freedom.’”

A House panel advanced a GOP measure Wednesday that would greatly expand the ability of Americans to carry concealed weapons across state lines, while also moving on a bipartisan basis to close loopholes in the federal background check system for gun buyers.

The two bills are the first firearms-related legislation to advance on Capitol Hill since mass shooters in Las Vegas and Texas killed a combined 84 people. The House Judiciary Committee approved the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act on a 19-11 party-line vote, then passed the Fix NICS Act on a 17-6 bipartisan vote.

With the 2017 acquisition of Armadillo Concealment by Comp-Tac Victory Gear, consumers are now able to purchase clothing and apparel designed for shooters straight from Comp-Tac. One of the company's first products under the new brands is the Armadillo Shooting Vest, designed particularly for competition shooters.

"When hundredths of a second can make a difference between a pretty good run and winning, it's critical to be able to quickly and reliably move clothing out of the way to get to your gun and then have that clothing quickly return to out-of-the way normal carry position during firing," said Randi Rogers, Comp-Tac Victory Gear sales and marketing manager.

The gun control debate is breaking out again across the country. In diners and around dinner tables, at the water cooler at work, on Facebook pages and Twitter feeds we’re seeing advocates of gun control square off against the defenders of the right to keep and bear arms and the human right of self-defense. Even college campuses are getting into the mix. At Slippery Rock University in New York, for example, College Republicans and College Democrats recently debated amending or scrapping the Second Amendment, though as you might imagine, the side that wants to scrap the Second Amendment isn’t too clear on how that would work, exactly.

Our friends at Gun Owners of America and the Virginia Citizens Defense League have reminded us that the concealed carry reciprocity bill introduced by Republican Rep. Richard Hudson (NC-8) is being marked up by the House Judiciary Committee today.

Under Hudson’s legislation, H.R. 38, The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017, every state will recognize the constitutional right to concealed carry for the protection of you, your family and your friends.

CA: Slippery slope getting steeper

One of the primary arguments against new gun control legislation is that it is a slippery slope leading to law-abiding citizens losing their rights. The tragic irony is that we are already on a slippery slope and law-abiding Americans are losing their rights.

Mass shootings have been increasing in both frequency and number of victims annually. The use of semi-automatic pistols in these shootings has been giving way to semi-automatic rifles. And since gun sales spike after a mass shooting, it’s not surprising that production and sales of pistols and rifles has been increasing sharply (shotguns numbers are flat, by the way).

Supreme Court Declines Cert In 4th Circuit Gun Case, So… Let’s Get To Regulating!

I can’t get inside their heads, but for now, it doesn’t matter. States where politicians have the will should get to regulating! The Fourth Circuit says that, even under Heller, you can regulate weapons of war. LET’S DO THAT. If the courts won’t stand in the way, all you have to do is overcome freaking crazy people who think you need an assault rifle to shoot ducks and intimidate counter-protesters at their Nazi rallies.

TN: Is There Room for Common-Sense Gun Legislation?

The Tennessee chapter of Moms Demand Action picks its battles judiciously. Once labeled as a bunch of anti-gun extremists, the group is anything but, spokeswoman Kat McRitchie says.

“We seek common ground. We work with legislators on both sides of the aisle. We’re nonpartisan,” McRitchie explains. “We’re simply looking for common-sense gun solutions, which the majority of Americans support.”

With the state Legislature passing more pro-gun laws annually, moving ever closer to “constitutional carry” – the right to pack a gun at all times, except maybe for convicted felons and the legally insane – the organization has no choice but to move with caution.

Perhaps between the thoughts and prayers we offer for the gun massacre of the week, you’ve taken some time to educate yourself about the leading organization fighting to defend the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, the National Rifle Association, or NRA.

Hold up. This isn’t a pro- or anti-gun article.

This is an anti-hypocrisy article.

The Second Amendment Doesn’t Apply To Patients
The NRA says that it believes strongly in the Second Amendment, which states: “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

Here’s a disturbing story out of Hawaii which should alarm Second Amendment advocates as well as more liberal supporters of legalized, medical marijuana. Those may sound like two fairly disparate issues, but they intersect in a new call from the Hawaiin government for medical marijuana users to “voluntarily” surrender all of their firearms. If you’re sensing a really complicated legal mess unfolding here, award yourself three extra perspicacity points.

Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) sent four letters to Trump campaign associates Tuesday requesting more information for the committee's investigation into Russian election interference.

Letters to foreign policy adviser J.D. Gordon and campaign co-chair Sam Clovis asked both men to turn over "all documents concerning the NRA" and several Republicans and Russians tied to it.

Pleas for more gun control are the weakest response.

Yes, it’s despicable how politicians kowtow to the weapons lobby. Yes, it’s sad that the National Rifle Association, created to promote safe use of guns, has taken such an absolute stand. Their minions in Congress don’t dare talk about common sense updates, lest the checks stop flowing.

The Second Amendment says what it says, but it has never been interpreted to mean private ownership of any weapon by anyone is protected at any time. Don’t believe it? Try to buy a single stick of dynamite without a license. But an AK-47 with a steady stand is OK?

Monday’s City Council meeting turned into a debate whether people with concealed carry permits should be allowed to carry firearms in schools, which Cranston law currently allows.

Councilman John Lanni Jr. once again brought up the resolution to ban concealed carry permits in Cranston schools to effectively make them gun-free zones, although the council has already voted against the resolution. This time, Councilman Lanni used the meeting to discuss a resolution “urging the General Assembly to pass legislation banning guns in schools.”

UT: Private employers in Utah generally may establish workplace gun policies

Unsurprisingly, the debate concerning firearms has spilled over into the workplace. Employers wrestle with whether to implement rules banning or governing firearms at work or on their premises, perhaps unsure if the law will permit certain gun policies. Other than general bans on certain types of weapons (such as automatic weapons), federal law doesn’t govern guns in the workplace. Thus, state laws largely determine whether an employer may establish gun policies.

As Mass Shootings Fade, Lawmakers Restart Push to Expand Gun Rights

After the shock of several mass-shootings in recent months, including the Oct. 1 massacre of 58 people in Las Vegas and the killing of 26 people in a Texas church a month later, it’s back to regular order on gun politics in Congress.

The House Judiciary Committee today began debating a bill requiring states to honor concealed-carry handgun permits issued by other states even if their restrictions are more stringent. As a result, states with more restrictive laws such as New York, Maryland and New Jersey, would be required to honor concealed-carry cards issued by more gun-friendly states.

Imagine your morning commute with no traffic lanes, stop signs, traffic signals or speed limits. None of these existed prior to the advent and proliferation of the automobile. Society adapted to changes in transportation and progressed accordingly.

When the Second Amendment was adopted, the weapon du jour was a slow-loading musket. As with the automobile, weapons have been developed in the past 200 years on the basis of increased destruction to be used for military operations. There is absolutely no place or justification for assault weapons or bump-stock conversion kits in the general population.

"For wanting to make women safer, Corban has been vilified by the gun control lobby. 'I have been called so many names, threatened so many times, that it almost doesn't seem real,' Corban admits. But the name calling hasn't stopped her. A gun, she argues, can make women, who tend to be physically smaller than their attackers, or the elderly or disabled, safer. A gun is an equalizer for the weak against a stronger assailant."

Niagara County Clerk Joseph A. Jastrzemski will host another in his series of public meetings on pistol permit renewals at 7 p.m. this evening in Hartland Town Hall, 8942 Ridge Road.

Under the NY-SAFE Act, all pistol permit holders must recertify after five years. Anyone who obtained a permit before 2013 must do so by Jan. 31, or the permit can be revoked.

"Their Second Amendment rights shouldn’t be put in jeopardy by this burden that the state has placed on them, and we want to help them navigate the new paperwork so that doesn’t happen," Jastrzemski said.

Canada: Quebec shooting victims want Trudeau to do something about gun violence

A coalition from Quebec is calling on the Trudeau government to live up to its promises on gun control. The group includes survivors of the Montreal Polytechnique massacre in 1989, and of the more recent fatal shooting at the Quebec City Mosque. They want the government to recognize “the human costs of weak laws, including flaws related to possession permits, gun sales and the availability of assault weapons.”

Now, to be clear, the Liberals did not promise much on gun control in 2015. In fact, they pointedly promised not to reinstitute the previous Chrétien Liberal government’s long gun registry, which the Harper folks abolished.

Has the Supreme Court grown gun-shy?

Ever since recognizing an individual right to bear arms almost a decade ago, the court has been skeptical of a series of claims from promoters of gun rights.

On Monday, the court declined to hear two such cases.

The result is that a Maryland ban on semi-automatic rifles such as the AR-15, along with a ban on large-capacity detachable magazines, will be allowed to stand, as will be Florida’s ban on the open carry of firearms.

Paradoxically, the case that established the individual right to bear arms — 2008’s District of Columbia v Heller — helps to explain Monday’s rulings.

HI: Hawaii, Which Registers Guns and Medical Marijuana Users, Starts Disarming Patients

Hawaii is one of 29 states that allow medical use of marijuana, but it is the only state that requires registration of all firearms. If you are familiar with the criteria that bar people from owning guns under federal law, you can probably surmise what the conjunction of these two facts means for patients who use cannabis as a medicine, which Hawaii allows them to do only if they register with the state. This month many of them received a letter from Honolulu Police Chief Susan Ballard, instructing them to turn in their guns.
