We can not identify the next public murderer. Despite the unknown details, there are clear trends from past events. We know he is probably not a trained terrorist. He has a history of mental illness, but has not been declared a threat to himself or others. The most important fact is that we know there will be another public mass murder. We also know there are actions we can take now that will reduce the damage to come.

One success of gun-rights activists over the past decade has been their campaign to block the advent of smart guns, firearms that use biometric and other sensor technologies to prevent them from being fired by anyone other than their owners. Even though smart guns are widely available overseas, no American gun retailers sell them—in no small part due to threats and harassment aimed at any who have tried. But now, pending legislation could shake up that status quo. |

Kodiak bears are the largest bears anywhere on the planet—a distinction they share only with polar bears. A hunt for one of these creatures is a once in a lifetime opportunity, but 14-year-old Kavin Roberts was not hunting for bear when he came across one in late October. Instead, the Kodiak native and his uncle were out chasing deer when they stumbled into an adult Kodiak that had been stalking them. |

The Dallas Zoo could be headed for a legal showdown over the “no guns” signs it posts at its entrance.
A Houston attorney last month lodged a formal complaint against the zoo under a new law, which created an enforcement mechanism for a 2003 law that lets concealed handgun license holders carry at most property “owned or leased by a governmental entity.” |

It’s no secret that Democrats have a good shot at regaining the majority in the Senate next year. Roll Call reported last summer that the GOP is defending 24 senate seats next year. If they lose five, they lose the majority, four if Democrats take the White House, and nine of those states Obama won at least once. |
