NEW YORK (AP) — A woman has been arrested after she allegedly tried to pass through a security checkpoint at Westchester County Airport with a loaded handgun in her carryon luggage.

"Barbara Mongelluzzo, 52, was scheduled for arraignment Saturday on a charge of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon... Mongelluzzo said that since the gun had not been detected on her earlier flight from Syracuse to White Plains, she did not expect it to be found on her return..."

"Recently, 2nd Amendment advocates were appalled at the intent of the UN to interfere with national sovereignty in an attempt to disarm the world. Many of those same people are so busy trying to "get used to the new normality" since the September 11 attacks that they have not paid attention to what is going on with the UN now--and Bush will be able to effectively sign over any sovereign status our Bill of Rights has in order to further the agenda of the New World Order." --Shonda M. Ponder

"The U.S. military is spearheading a switch to 'smart' identity cards that could open up a new growth market as the world becomes obsessed with security after last month's hijack attacks.

The U.S. Defense Department has ordered chip-based ID cards for 4.3 million military personnel over the next 18 months to tighten security on access to buildings, including the Pentagon, and to computer networks, including access to encrypted e-mail and online transactions...."

"Though it was less expansive in scale, we can learn a great deal about the long-term impact of terrorism from what occurred in the aftermath of the 1999 Columbine High School massacre in Littleton, CO.

"Principals around the country reacted by turning their schools into armed camps, instituting a zero-tolerance policy regarding weapons, and profiling "potentially dangerous students" ... were quick to suspect and suspend students for innocent, yet ill-advised, comments or jokes..."

"HUNDREDS of British police officers are to be armed for the first time with guns that fire plastic bullets. Nearly 200 of the specially designed firearms, together with more than 100,000 rounds of ammunition, have been bought by police chiefs.

"The surprise move follows a wide-ranging review into recent deaths caused by police shootings and aims to provide a new "non-lethal" solution to dealing with rioters, hostage-takers and mentally unstable people who run amok with weapons."

Bob Landis decided to put off getting a handgun permit no longer.

Uncertainty over terrorist attacks and anthrax scares were on Landis' mind when he visited the records office in the St. Joseph County jail for an application last week. He also was uneasy about any type of backlash bringing about new gun control measures.

"That's not my sole purpose," Landis said, referring to security threats hitting closer to home almost daily. "I was worried about it getting harder to get a permit."

"From the time children are old enough to say "bang, bang," they wreak make- believe havoc with their plastic pistols, rifles and grenades.

But fun and games do not look like fun and games anymore -- not after Sept. 11. To some adults, the toys have taken on a darker, more sinister aura, as if the terrorists have destroyed the buffer between reality and fantasy." --Robert Seltzer

A federal jury has deadlocked over charges two "anti-government militia" members conspired to use a "weapon of mass destruction" to blow up two massive propane storage tanks in the Sacramento suburb of Elk Grove.

Prosecutors contend the men hoped federal authorities would respond by declaring martial law, prompting a nationwide response from militia members, and presented evidence that the two traveled to "militia meetings, gun shows and survivalist expositions."

"...Although the court's opinion permits some limits on firearms possession and use -- such as laws forbidding ex-felons to carry guns or prohibiting guns on airplanes - it places the burden of justifying these limits on the government. That marks a substantial change from the prior attitude of judicial deference to gun control legislation..." --Michael C. Dorf
