"In one of his last acts in office, retiring Livingston County Circuit Court Judge Daniel Burress ordered the Island Lake Shooting Range closed pending the outcome of a trial."

"No date has been set in the case filed by the Green Oak Township board in June, to force the state Department of Natural Resources to comply with township noise regulations. The gun range is in the Island Lake State Recreation Area, east of Brighton in Green Oak Township."

"A spokesman said the state would appeal the ruling."

"At the conclusion of three days of testimony in the case, Burress said Tuesday he would sign an order prohibiting the discharge of 'pistols, rifles and shotguns,' which will effectively shut down both the rifle range and privately operated skeet, trap and sporting clay range. The order was expected within the next few days." ...

"The Utah Supreme Court on Friday upheld the state law prohibiting felons from having guns."

"Wade L. Willis, 24, had contended the law was unconstitutional. He argued that the Legislature had the power to regulate his use of a firearm but not his right to possess one."

"A stolen gun was found in Willis's bedroom closet ...while he was on probation at the time for evading a police officer, a third degree felony. Willis has a history of nonviolent misdemeanor convictions and charges..."

"A Fourth District judge rejected the argument, and the Utah Court of Appeals agreed, ruling in 2002 that the statute did not run afoul of a person's constitutional right to bear arms." ...

-------
SARASOTA, Fla. -- A fisherman was cited for killing an alligator nicknamed Elvis who lived in a golf course community's pond.

The man said he stabbed the reptile in self-defense.

Rick Allen Burns, 49, faces up to 60 days in jail and a fine if convicted on a misdemeanor charge of possession of an alligator without a permit.

Five-foot-long Elvis was found dying in October with a hunting knife in its head. A $1,000 reward for information was posted and an anonymous tip led to Burns, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said Friday.

Residents said Elvis first showed up at their pond about 18 months ago, and had never hurt anyone -- or ducks living nearby.

Burns told investigators, however, that he stabbed the alligator after he bit the fisherman's baited hook, then lunged at Burns when he tried to cut the line.

"Some people are not aware of the seriousness of violating Florida's Wildlife Codes and are surprised to find that the FWC takes these situations very seriously," investigator Mike Frantz said in a statement.

KENNESAW, Ga. (AP) — There is little money to be gained from attempting to rob a bank that is still under construction, police say a Marietta man learned on Wednesday.

Michael Donald Marshall, 39, entered the Bank of America and demanded $500 from the tellers while threatening that he had a gun, according to the Kennesaw Police Department.

The employees then told him the bank wasn't open for business and there was no money. Kennesaw Police arrived as Marshall exited the building empty-handed, officers said.

The suspect is charged with armed robbery. During their investigation, police also learned that Marshall had an outstanding warrant for shoplifting in Cobb, Kennesaw Police spokesman officer Scott Luther said.

-------
For those who may not know it, Kennesaw, Georgia might be among the silliest places to try to rob anything, let alone an unfinished bank. In Kennesaw, a law requires every home to have a firearm on hand. (There is an exemption for people whose religion requires them to be defenseless targets.)

LOS ANGELES -- "Hollywood is licking its wounds after an election that saw voters not only reject the candidate it anointed -- Democrat John Kerry -- but repudiate the values that the liberal stronghold cherishes."

"Now, amid the second-guessing and recriminations that inevitably haunt the losing side, some are beginning to ask: Has Hollywood become a liability to the Democrats?"

"Political analysts said that polarizing figures such as Michael Moore -- whose 'Fahrenheit 9/11' documentary bitterly attacked President Bush -- alienated Middle America as much as they galvanized the faithful." ...

NASHUA, N.H. -- A Bedford man wants an apology and a couple hundred dollars from the Nashua police.

Joseph Galibois says police violated his rights by threatening to arrest him when he dressed up as a terrorist and waved a Kerry for president sign to drivers outside a polling place on Tuesday. He said he was trying to illustrate his view that John Kerry was soft on terrorism. He was wearing a ski mask and ammunition bandoleers and carried a plastic squirt gun that resembled an assault rifle.

Police said they ordered Galibois to get rid of the mask, gun and bandoleers because of complaints that he was alarming people. They said he also was creating a traffic hazard.

Galibois filed a complaint Thursday in Hillsborough County Superior Court. In addition to the apology, Galibois says he wants $208 from the police sergeant who confronted him -- a dollar for every Tuesday until the next election.

This is the latest police blotter from the Bronx Times. Contained in this one short report are at least six reports of illegal gun possessions, including those used violently and at least four reports of stabbings.

If the handgun ban is so effective, why are so many illegal handguns available?

Can anyone really argue that the people stabbed to death would be worse off if they'd used handguns to defend themselves?

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
For, in principle, there is no difference between a law prohibiting the wearing of concealed arms, and a law forbidding the wearing such as are exposed; and if the former be unconstitutional, the latter must be so likewise. But it should not be forgotten, that it is not only a part of the right that is secured by the constitution; it is the right entire and complete, as it existed at the adoption of the constitution; and if any portion of that right be impaired, immaterial how small the part may be, and immaterial the order of time at which it be done, it is equally forbidden by the constitution. [Bliss vs. Commonwealth, 12 Ky. (2 Litt.) 90, at 92, and 93, 13 Am. Dec. 251 (1822)
