Inmates can't have a legal right to arm themselves

We try to tread lightly in criticizing judges, who are vastly more knowledgeable about the law than we can ever be. But this is flat-out illogical. So now, no matter what prison rules say, it can be OK for jailed felons to carry weapons?

It's one thing for a law-abiding citizen to get a gun permit and carry a weapon to protect himself. But here we're talking about felons: criminals who have demonstrated no regard for any life other than their own, and who are bound by strict prison rules governing every waking moment. If feeling threatened is a sufficient reason for them to carry a weapon, we suspect most inmates, given the atmosphere in prisons, could build a case for self-defense.

The video you will see on this web site is horrifying. The crimes committed against law-abiding gun owners are beyond comprehension. The arrogance of anti-gun politicians and government officials and their hate of freedom will churn your stomach. The law is the law, the Constitution is the Constitution.

Webb said he supports the Second Amendment and was surprised when the NRA sent out a mailer supporting George Allen.

Webb said he got his first rifle when he was eight and he gave his son his first rifle at the same age.

"I am a member of the NRA and I look forward to calling the leaders of that group on Wednesday,’’ he said to the crowd’s applause.

Do you think the National Rifle Association is all about preserving the right to bear arms under the Second Amendment to the federal constitution? Or is the NRA also dedicated to good hunting?

Neither. It's actually a shill for the motorized-recreation lobby, as matters have developed on the proposed Browns Canyon Wilderness Area in Chaffee County. The NRA opposes it, and on that account, the bill may not pass Congress this year.

And the anti-gun crowd has mostly silenced its muskets in favor of Democratic candidates who make nice noises about the Second Amendment and beg the NRA for endorsements. This includes, not coincidentally, those Democrats most competitive in their U.S. Senate contests heading into Tuesday: Webb (VA), Ford (TN), McCaskill (MO), Tester (MT), and Casey (PA).

This year's politics in Tennessee may seem particularly nasty, but it's no match for the deadly violence that struck rural Polk County in 1948.

Down in the southeast corner of the state, National Guardsmen were brought in to restore the peace after three ambush killings and unrest at voting precincts in Copperhill, Turtletown and Ducktown.Polk County executive Mike Stinnett says it wasn't mudslinging then; "it was actual bullets."

Most of the people attending Grant Asher's handgun safety class early on a Saturday morning are there for one reason: Personal security.

And they believe the road to personal security is through obtaining a concealed handgun permit.

Concealed handgun permits have been available to the general public since 1991, Asher said. Prior to that time, citizens had to show a significant need, and give a reason to obtain, the permit. From there, the local Sheriff's Office would determine if the person received the permit.

Since 1991, the process has been made simpler.

Two teenagers carrying weapons were arrested in separate incidents Friday and Saturday, police say.

Vallejo Officer Jason Bauer arrested 18-year-old Bradley Bradley following a foot chase that began in the 200 block of Maine Street around 6 p.m. Friday, Lt. Jim O'Connell said Saturday.

Bradley allegedly ran when Bauer stopped to question a large crowd that had assembled on a corner. After Bauer caught Bradley, the officer found the teenager had a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun, O'Connell said.

You cannot fault the political initiative-itis or, for the past few years, the money either. Yet public hysteria about crime is worse than ever. According to police, reported crime figures, violent crimes and crimes of "violence against the person" (they are recorded separately) are rising remorselessly. The last figures show the use of handguns in crime up 7% on the previous year, to 4,652 offences, and injuries from guns up 16%. What about knife crime? There is a row about the evidence, but reports suggest it's a rising problem again.

Mr Webb is by no means a typical Democrat. Although he opposed the Iraq war, he is a decorated Vietnam veteran who served as Ronald Reagan’s navy secretary and has championed what he calls southern “red-neck culture”.
He likes guns so much that he gave his son (who is named after the confederate general Robert E. Lee) a weapon at the age of eight.

You may never be able to thwart a hijacking like Bruce Willis, or stop a chemical-weapons attack like Jack Bauer, or glower at a street punk while leveling a .44 Magnum at his head like Dirty Harry. But thanks to Manhattan Shooting Excursions and its “Handguns of Hollywood” course, you can at least fire the same types of guns wielded by those action heroes. And glower. You’re perfectly free to glower.

Criminals using guns. It's a problem that pretty much everybody (except criminals) wants to stop. There are different views, however, about the best way to reduce the number of gun crimes being committed every year. Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a group of 109 mayors from cities in 44 states, met in Chicago today to discuss strategies that could be used to keep guns from getting into the hands of criminals. They focused a lot on dealers, especially dealers in states with looser gun laws.

A West Memphis man shot and critically injured an intruder who broke into his house and tapped him on the forehead with a pistol, police said. The homeowner, who has not been identified, told police that he was lying on the couch watching television early Friday when a man "tapped him on his head with an old black pistol" and demanded money. The homeowner gave the man his wallet, then pulled a handgun from under his pillow and shot the intruder. "The homeowner stated he didn't know how many times he fired his weapon, but that he fired every shot in his magazine," said Mike Allen, assistant chief for the West Memphis police.

Investigators say burglars were confronted by the 65-year-old homeowner when they entered the residence. The owner fired several shots, and the suspects fled the property. Bradley Parrish, 19, of Longview was shot, and found dead a short time later.

Mayor Bloomberg blasted his political predecessors yesterday for handing out concealed-gun permits to their well-connected cronies. "We have been pretty hard-nosed about renewing [permits]," Bloomberg said on his weekly WABC-AM radio show. "Sometimes, some administrations, you know, if any of their friends want a gun permit, they just gave it to 'em," he said. "And I don't think that's right. I think you should have to justify it."

Here's a heads-up for the thugs of New York City: Don't even THINK of carrying a gun. Under a law pushed by Mayor Bloomberg and signed by Gov. Pataki, anyone caught with an illegal loaded firearm on the streets is begging to do hard time. As in 3-1/2 to 15 years in prison. Harsh? No. Well-deserved? Yes. The tougher things get for gun-toting criminals, the safer things will be for everyone else.

Bloomberg, like all liberals, has finally gotten around to wanting our guns. He started out targeting illegal street guns and has now worked up to licensed guns. He says no one needs a gun in the city, but then he goes around with five heavily armed NYPD officers. It is already almost impossible to get a carry permit in the city, but the few that do exist he now wants to rescind. It's been proven that an armed citizenry stops crime. Bloomberg should be encouraging gun ownership, not the reverse.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
The writings of scholars who have written on the subject are virtually united on the point that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to keep and bear arms, not simply the state national guards. — PROFESSOR GLENN HARLAN REYNOLDS
